I hired Norseman Door to install a new garage door opener. They submitted a bid promptly, the bid was very reasonable, they threw in a garage door adjustment, and they were available to install the garage opener the next business day. The installer was very friendly, efficient, and was familiar with the product I'd bought. He also agreed to recycle my old machine. My only suggestion is that you take a little time to check to ensure that everything is working properly before you leave. As the installer was leaving, I noticed that the wall control unit didn't work. Thankfully I caught him in time for him to check it out and diagnose the problem. He gave me some helpful tips about how to address the problem with the manufacturer, those tips were spot on, and everything now works great. I'd definitely recommend these folks and would hire them again.

I liked everything about hiring Argent to get my garage door opener installed. The quality of work and professionalism shown was VERY good. Raul and his son did a tremendous job at my newly owned home, which was built before openers came to market so there was NO room for the track in my garage ceiling. But with a little brain storming, they made it work and I no longer have to get out in the weather to open or close my door...!!! This company is new to the area, partly because of the Texas hurricane. They are eager to please and answered my call quickly, worked with my schedule, and now just 2 days later, the job is done. I highly recommend this team. The honest faces and firm handshakes meant a lot to me. I wish them a great success and send them a warm Welcome to our area...!!! You will be glad you hired Argent for your project... I sure am...!!! Thank you, Donna G.

I'm so happy with the Customer Service Ted provides and also to add, he is so Customer focused ...for e.g. he actually bought lamps for the Garage when we noticed one was fused and I did not have any at home ...does a complete job!

My garage door was partially broken. I contacted with garage door at first. They told me the technician was coming. It never happened . No show, no call. Wasted me two days of waiting. Nobody even bother to call me. I called Precision garage. They set up appointment with me right away. The estimator Craig show up my door with very professional and friendly. He told me that how long it's gonna take to get the door part back. He also temporarily fixed my broken door and placed the garage door back so won't leave the door opened. I was very pleased their service. I will recommend their company.

Had our kitchen cabinets painted, the painters did a great job! One important aspect I want to note is the respect these workers showed toward our house; removing their shoes, keeping the front door closed when possible, etc., etc. Very thoughtful and professional!

I can't say enough about Alex. He was so professional and understanding of my situation and my stress. He explained what he was doing and answered all my questions patiently and fully. He got doors and trunk opened quickly, but, to my great frustration the keys were not there. AAAACH!!!!! He then helped me search my trunk and car twice. I didn't expect that. He went beyond what is required of his job. No luck. He then explained options for a replacement key and price. Alex made a stressful situation a little easier to deal with.

Larry added some gutter downspouts to a multi-level roof that had upper level gutters emptying out onto the next level roof surface. This arrangement was causing leaks during heavy rains. Larry added downspouts from the upper level gutters to empty into the next level gutters. Roof leak issues solved and the work looks great. Larry also replaced 2 man-doors in my garage that posed a security risk because they had doggy doors in them; one leading into the house and one leading into the yard. Excellent work on all projects. Larry informed me when he ran into unexpected issues and gave me options on how he planned to work around the issues and he did not charge extra for any of the unforeseen work. I even changed the original plan midway through the gutter job and he had no problems accommodating. He did quality work. The gutters function way better and look great. The new doors are set better and balanced better than the old doors. Great Work!!! I will be using LG Home Improvement and Maintenance again for future projects for sure!

Replacement of a garage door opener. Ahron has an A++ attitude and provides service way above par. He ended up utilizing stronger materials then came included with my opener that I pre purchased. It was also missing a small part out of box (extremely rare) and Ahron just got the part for me and came back promptly to get the job done right. So many more steps to a garage door install then one would think, and Ahron covers all of them. Highly recommend, super service and value.

Responsive and professional, Fernando was amazing. Within 24 hours he had our aging garage door all fixed up and working like new. It was great to see someone genuinely interested in doing the right thing for the customer without trying upsell on new tech or trying to replace things that were working fine and still in good shape. Had a great time with this company, they were very flexible with my chaotic schedule, and came on time with all the required tools. They worked with me on selecting the right garage doors plus the right color and even went a step further by putting safety features on the suspension systems. Very good price for what I got. Thanks

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.

How much does it cost to get a new garage door?

A new garage door can add serious curb appeal, not to mention myriad home safety benefits. The cost of a new garage door will vary based on the type of garage door you want and the materials it will be made of. You can purchase a new garage door and have the pros install it for you, but proceed with caution as many installers won’t guarantee their labor if you didn’t purchase the garage door through their company. A new door (without installation) may cost anywhere from $200 to $4,000 or more, depending on size, brand and materials. Here are some examples of average new garage door costs, including installation:

  • Raised-panel, insulated,16x7 garage door: $1,100
    • Without insulation: about $900
  • Raised-panel, insulated, 8x7: $700
    • Without insulation: $550
  • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,500
  • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,000
    • A carriage-house garage door is a barn-style door with handles and hinges; it looks like it pulls out in the style of a barn door but is actually a roll-up.
  • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $3,500
  • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $2,000–$2,200
  • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 16x7 garage door with window in top panels: $5,000
  • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 8x7 garage door with window in top panels: $3,500

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.
