Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Martha helped us with training issues with our 1 year old basset hound and our 13 year old corgi. We recently had a new baby and with the change in the household had issues with fighting between the dogs. We also had other training with the bassett hound such as barking and taking and chewing baby items, shoes, and socks. Martha was wonderful, it has been about a week since she was here and we have seen a large improvement in all the areas needed. I would highly recommend using her if you have any issues to work through with your dogs.

Thank you Martha! I was very hesitant about getting a trainer, only because it is a little bit of a financial commitment and I think a lot of us think that we can do things ourselves, but I was really having a hard time with one of my dogs and decided that it was worth it to try a trainer. She was great. She was very responsive and attentive before I even hired her, and even more so after. She works with you to make sure you get what you want/need out of the session. She met my two dogs and helped me better understand why they were misbehaving and how I could make them better. She listened to all my concerns and addressed all of them, and best of all once she works with you, you can call her anytime for additional help which is very reassuring. On a side note she is also very fair, and if money is a concern she can definitely work with you to try to keep the time frame within your budget which was very appreciated. If you are looking for a dog trainer, I definitely recommend Martha!

Martha came to work with us and our 3 Yorkies. Two are male puppies and our other is our 12 year old female Yorkie. She had a lot of information to share and guidance as we asked for her help with potty training, barking, teething, integrating the dogs as our older dog is not fond of the puppies. We were so very thankful she was able to come and help us. Martha is genuine and only has the family and pets best interest at heart. Thank you Martha for changing your plans to be able to accommodate our schedule! We are very grateful and look forward to following up with you on our progress.

I was ready to give my English Bulldog, Jasper back to the breeder. I didn’t have the time or energy needed to train such a headstrong, stubborn boy. Jey was my last hope. She didn’t fail us. Jasper is so we’ll behaved now it’s like night and day. I highly recommend Jey. Her methods work and I would not hesitate to use her services again if I have another stubborn tank of a dog. Thank you Jey.

I wish I could give Martha more than 5 stars. She has deep knowledge and experience on how to handle dogs of any age, breed or size. She was prompt in her communication and arrived on time. We voice recorded and took notes during her session. Right from dog food nutrition, communication, leadership and training she guided us fully. Her techniques were easy and efficient to follow and we could see drastic changes in our pup the same evening after our session. Our pup used to bark and whine in the crate. Following her method, I could see him so calm and relaxed the same evening when I crated him. She also taught us how to correct wrong behavior and teach them the right behavior. I wish I had met her the day I brought my pup home. I’d happily recommend her to anyone who needs help with their pup or dog.

I have so many things I could say about Jey but here's the quick version!! We had a wild corgi (Gus) who pulled relentlessly on the leash, bit, and jumped all over guests. He was crazy wild. After the board and train with Jey he in 3 weeks was doing perfect recall (would come when I said come), no longer jumps on guests, can walk in a perfect heal (even when I use my wheelchair) and never pulls on his leash. Gus also learned a command called "place" where he stays on his dog bed and stays perfectly. Also he doesn't eat shoes, socks, or bite now so we could not b happier. We love Jey and she made our Gus into a dream dog. You will absolutely not regret working with Jey she is the very best.

We have a new 13 week old Golden Retriever, Harper. We were fortunate enough to get an appt with Martha. Money well spent! A true pro! She kept us informed by confirming appt several times- very reliable. That was just the beginning- she proceeded to give us an education on dog behavior, how to effectively guide animal to be a loving family member, get rid of bad habits, always with care. I could have listened to her another 4 hrs!. Our family is already calmer, as we now have training tools to calm and set limits. She was patient, funny, welcomed questions, even let my daughter attend session. She is the absolute best and a true pro. At end of session, she welcomed and encouraged us to contact her with any questions or concerns going forward. We will see”Aunt Martha” again, and have absolutely no hesitation giving her an A++++++++. Amazing session, we learned so much Thanks Martha!
