Jarrod worked on adjusting the loose hinge in our bathroom glass door and he installed a new glass panel for another bathroom. His work was pretty solid. Jarrod was very good and thorough in his follow-ups from the beginning to the end. He kept his time and his estimates were very close to the final amount. I would strongly recommend him. (In fact I have already given his contact to my friend who wanted some help.)

Had the bathroom subfloor replaced due to water damage. Dave was on time and got the job done quickly so my flooring contractor could finish their job. He was always on time. Pro.com followed up with communication about the job, had an invoice for me. Nice.

Igor worked on a townhome remodel for one of my design clients. He was easy to work with, and offered great insight about installation and materials. He was very responsive and flexible about the timing of the work and the scope. He did great work at a fair price, and I would definitely recommend.

I asked Paul to generate a CAD layout of my unfinished basement to show possible ways of turning the area into a 3 rd bedroom and bathroom. What he provided was very useful in determining what was cost effective prior to the sale of my house. I left the layout available to prospective buyers so they could see what could be done with the area and at what price. Paul visited the house, measured as needed and came up with a couple of options that we went over to find the best financial fit. Thanks Paul.

They were very professional and the quality of their painting of our whole house which encompassed two master suites, and a loft upstairs, downstairs kitchen living room powder room, also the outside two story multi colors stucco exterior , the work was wonderful. Now to the kitchen cabinets they were the usual faded old oak cabinets, they refinished the cabinets with a beautiful gray finish , very glad I didn't have to buy all new cabinets because the outcome of the painting was wonderful they look like all new cabinets now. I would highly recommend them to anyone and next time I need painting I would definitely use them again.

After many attempts to replace my old, mismatched living and dining room furniture, it was obvious I needed help. I just didn't know what style or colors to choose. Fortunately, I found Lulu of Styled Staging though Thumbtack. She was amazing; what had once seemed overwhelming to me became fun. After just one visit with me in my home, and one shopping trip, Lulu suggested specific furniture items that fit my lifestyle and my home. Her design knowledge, enthusiasm, and great personality were a wonderful match for me. I will post some pictures once I finish accessorizing.

Rosie installed a handmade painted grasscloth wallpaper in my powder room. She did a great job it was a very fussy kind of wallpaper which neither of us realized till we got started. She took her time to line everything up and was very conscientious thru the entire job. I'm grateful that she have the patience to see it through. She was great to work with.

After locally "shopping" around for different interior designers, I decided to go with Freshen Design after reviewing samples of the interior design work they've previously done and based on my positive discussions with the owner, Francine. I found Francine to be attentive to my needs-- she has a very keen eye for design and she tried her best to work with my budget. Whenever I raised any concerns, she took the time to listen and consider my opinion or needs. She was completely transparent when outlining the pros and cons of different design options. There were several instances where she went above and beyond to deliver the results I was looking for. Overall, extremely happy with the results and several friends have already complimented on my home's transformation!

We were looking at remodeling out kitchen and adding a facelift to our family and living room. The idea of taking on a remodeling project seemed easy until we got into the details of the do's and don'ts. We had several contractors come over to give us estimates and ideas of what we could do with our kitchen and the other areas. After much consideration and many unknowns, we realized that we needed someone with expertise to guide us through this process. That's when we contacted J&B Interior Design and spoke with Jeanine. After a few minutes speaking with her, we knew we had the right person to help us with our project. Jeanine was patient, professional and listened carefully to what we wanted with our project. She shared her expertise and created a 3D picture of what she thought we wanted and to our surprise, she was spot on! We were also very impressed with her attention the details. In our opinion, Jeanine’s expertise helped our vision come to fruition. Jeanine did an “Excellent” job with our project and again, her attention to the details was very impressive. We look forward to having family and friends over to join us for special occasions and holidays and enjoy our new home! Our new kitchen, the travertine on our fireplace, floors and open area exceeded our expectations. Thank you, Jeanine, for the solid performance. We recommend J&B Interior Design for any kitchen remodeling project(s).

My builder for life The people at Fine Design Build are part craftsman, part artist, part magician. I learned the hard way, courtesy of my previous builder, that you need all three qualities in your contractor. Most builders, quite frankly, operate with only one or two of those qualities - and then only in varying degrees of goodness. Like a two-legged stool, it shows in the results. If you want it done right- and not only right, but beyond what you might ask or imagine - I can't imagine a better choice than Fine Design Build. As I write this review, we're finishing up the remedial work on what passes for "industry standard" (right!, Industry standard is a code term for shoddy workmanship, inferior materials, crooked walls, bad ergonomic design, squeaky subfloors, poor paint work, bad excavation, and so on), and I am amazed that they have made some pretty challenging projects look like they were done right the first time- as originally intended! Considering what they had to work with (so-called industry standard), its incredible really. That's where the magician part comes in. With future big projects planned (a shop/barn and a timber frame home), it is comforting to know I have found a builder for life. I only wish I knew Fine Design Build before I got started on this cottage - you know, the one built to industry standards. If this review sounds a bit over the top, it's only because the results are over the top - results that have swung me from utterly frustrated to completely overjoyed.

I hired Emily to explore design possibilities for remodeling our kitchen. Emily came over at a time that was convenient for me and my husband did a thorough walk through, took measurements and discussed design budget. She provided me with several creative kitchen layouts and respectfully stayed within my design fee budget. I highly recommend her.

Alison was an amazing partner in designing our living room and dining room interiors. She truly listened to our visions and hopes and was able to "articulate" them with a comprehensive design proposal. I loved the color palette and the detail in all the pieces she picked. She also worked really well with our price point and was able to find amazing items. I really valued her professionalism and quick turnaround, especially given how much work clearly went into the design proposal. She also iterated really quickly with us and was responsive and helpful as our ideas shaped. I couldn't have asked for a better partner!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
