Fast, on time, personable, thoughtful. They didn’t try to up sell. Everyone I worked with was friendly from the woman who helped me book the appointment and understand the process as a first time home owner, to the gentlemen who came to install the water heater and fix a kitchen issue. Gave us an estimate and they stuck to that estimate. We will 100 percent be using them again.

I had to replace my water heater, and I was thinking about doing a tankless water heater if I could. Regulators was the only plumbing service that took the time to explain why a tankless heater wouldn't work for me (I live in a condo and didn't have the proper intake/outtake vents to the outside of the building in place). The other guys wanted me to pay $50 bucks so they could come out to my place to look at it first. I contacted Regulators on a Friday morning and I had a new heater by Sunday afternoon. Jason was prompt and professional and the cost was exactly what he said it would be. I will definitely be using them again should a need arise.

James gave me a very reasonable quote, and he installed a new water heater in my house yesterday. This was a tough job - a tiny space barely big enough to accommodate the heater, and awkward plumbing that had to be largely re-done in order for the heater to fit the space. It ended up being a longer, more difficult process than either of us bargained on, but James toughed it out and got it done. Despite the fact that the job was more complicated than we had originally anticipated, and required a lot more work than I think he was planning on, he did not attempt to charge me more than he had originally quoted (although I insisted on paying him extra because he certainly earned it). James is going to be my go-to guy for plumbing from now on.

Nilesh was on time, professional, friendly, and thorough. The wiring in my condo was (unknown to me) incompatible for the programmable thermostats I ordered to run the in-wall Cadet fan heaters. I addition, the original 1991 baseboard heaters were, I thought, 120 volts. Once new 120 volt heaters were installed all seemed well until they started to hum and buzz. After several phone calls with Cadet, Nilesh determined 240 volt heaters were required even though the wiring did not suggest so. I’m extremely happy with his work and have already discussed a future project with Nilesh. I highly recommend him!

Gil Bernard was great! He instantly determined the install wasn't done properly and within ten seconds noticed there was a leak. The copper pipe was leaking due to improper pipe installation and soldering. He replaced the pipe and ameliorated other issues with the install and serviced our tankless water heater. We will certainly call him again for any plumbing or other issues in the future. Steve Wise

We went with Dennis after receiving a few different quotes from other companies. His prices were reasonable and he didn't pressure us into anything we didn't need. We had central AC installed as well as a new furnace and water heater. The install day was very smooth and Dennis was always available to answer any questions or concerns. It's only been a couple months but everything is working great.

The worker H2Flow sent (Hassan Baker) was highly skilled and meticulous. Big smile and friendly! Dogs didn’t bark which is always a tell! We have a 6,400 sq ft home with complex systems that includes on-demand instant hot water. We have a small hot water tank that eliminates what he called “cold water sandwich “, an occurrence that’s common for tankless water heaters. I didn’t want to entrust this job to just anyone and did my research and went with H2Flow. I couldn’t have been more satisfied. The workmanship was exceptional! AAA+++

It was excellent experience working with Washington Natural Gas. Everything went smoothly and pleasant. One of our water heaters stopped working after 8 years life. I submitted work request on Thumbtack 11:00pm at night, then got a phone call from Mike at Washing Natural Gas next day morning. Mike was super friendly and knowledgeable. He provided all the options what we could do and offered a free estimate at our convinient time. 2 days later Eric and Andrew installed a new water heater for us. After the work was done, Eric walked me through in details what they did and cleaned up the working area. Eric also put a sticky note on the water tank with warranty information on it which is really helpful. We are very pleased with Washington Natural Gas and will definetly work with them again in the future.

Scott did the whole job my himself in 3 days total. I had my whole house re-piped, along with installation of new water heater, toilet, shower surround, and washer/dryer/fridge hookups. He has been doing this for years, which reflects in his work and his explanations. He was respectful, trustworthy, and explained each step along the way if I had questions. Definitely hire him for your next job if you want it done right!

Friendly, fast, and knowledgeable! I had my old 80 gallon hot water heater ripped out and replaced within 48 hours of contacting them. I initially wanted to get my old tank repaired, but quickly learned that it would just be prolonging the inevitable and a waste of money. I ended up with a top of the line, gas, tankless, whole house unit installed in a single day with minimal impact to my busy family of 7. Highly recommend these guys if you have any questions whatsoever about your hot water heater and I highly suggest making the investment on your home and family to upgrade to a new tankless unit today. What are you waiting for?

From the first phone call to the final bill McClendon's people and services exceeded expectations while providing fast, friendly service at best prices. Woke up at 4:45 am to a leaking water heater. Posted on Thumbtack and got a response from Taylor who alerted me to the water heater specials. Their prices were better than anyone could offer and they walked me through considerations for a tankless heater and add-Ins possibly needed for this job. Scheduled for the next day and friendly knowledgeable service person showed up right on time and performed the work admirably. All round highest marks.

Our water heater decided to go out on us Saturday evening. We have had it for 22 years and it reached its life span. I tried to shut off the water to the tank and that broke as well. So, it leaked all night and flooded our laundry room the next morning. I called Ally Plumbing and they sent Joe out to give us an estimate. He also capped the pipe where the valve broke. The next morning Joe showed back up to take out the old water heater and install the new one. He was friendly and worked hard. I spent most of the time watching him and asked questions. He was very patient and explained the process and ways to make the new one last for many years. He was finished by noon and I was very pleased with his work. I have finally found an honest and reliable plumber and plumbing company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.
