"I had a wonderful experience with her personal training sessions. She is down to earth and unlike any other fitness coach I have met. She was realistic, organized, punctual, readily available, encouraging, flexible, and informative. Amanda knows her stuff. There were times in the beginning, when I started eating the way she suggested and I started freaking out feeling like it was unmanageable but she would talk me through it and I came through the experience with a much better understanding of food. I finally, after 44 years, feel at peace with food without tracking and counting calories. No longer do I obsess over certain foods. Amanda teaches you what your body needs (and it isn’t cutting entire food groups out). She taught me awesome weight lifting exercises and body strength exercises too. What she taught me I can use at home or any gym. She didn’t lead me on trying to hook me into buying more sessions – she simply taught, gave me copies of what she taught, and moved on to the next session. She explained a lot about stretching, taking care of your body after workouts, and more. Amanda delivered everything promised and more. I walked away with a new understanding of how to fuel my body, without going hungry, and what the best workouts are. She kicked my butt in the gym but was encouraging the entire time – she made me want to push myself but not in a mean way. Her gym is awesome – everything you need to get fit. I can’t say enough good things about Amanda. I would highly recommend her. She is very personable and friendly yet professional. Definitely a good personal trainer for any age or gender. She knows her stuff and will get you in shape if you listen to her and work hard. I am down several lbs, clothes are looser, feeling good about myself, getting strong, and no longer obsessing over counting calories or the latest fad diet. She has given me sanity in the health department and I can’t put a price tag on that."

Ty told me he knew how to help me regain aspects of my health that I had lost. Somehow, it didn’t take long for me to realize he was as good as his word. He knew what he was doing. If you are seeking healing, inner or outer, I would suggest you take note. He gave me not only hope but the clarity I gained in two hours time was astounding. It would have been nearly impossible for me to even write this 4 hours ago due to brain trauma. I barely recognize this person that I just became in the last two hours. I believe this is who I was meant to be…healthy, whole and strong. I think he just handed my life, my future to me….. I have been suffering from brain fog, memory loss, abuse amnesia…I can’t remember the last time I ever felt so clear. My focus was scattered and my word recall was impaired but now words poor fluidly from my mouth. The connection between brain and tongue is complete. I feel at peace. To say this is a personal anomaly for me would be an understatement as anxiety has plagued my every waking hour. I'm amazed and without belief at how whole I feel again. Angela DeLattre She reported the next day that she is massively better. BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE Ty's work has been a profound experience for me which has assisted me with a greater quality of life. He directly tailors his work to the individual and their desire to address the most widely spread of topics. I truly recommend his services. Ursula Schanne, LMT EMPOWERED Ty helped me to see an energy block then proceeded to help me resolve it. Since then, I have, much more productively, been able to move energy up. My experience of Ty is that he is an exceptionally balanced and intuitive man who loves to empower others. He is willing and able to take me way deeper (than I have managed on my own) when I am willing to go there....even if I am reluctant. Gretchen Anderson MUSCLE DISEASE (Hills-saches Lesions) I have been to the best doctors at Virginia Mason Hospital to find help for a rare muscle deteriorating disease. I was sent home and given a prescription with instructions that I will need pain management drugs 3 times daily for the remainder of my life. After constant pain for 13 years I Eventually gave up the pain pills because they were useless. After my first session with Ty the pain I’ve had in my arm for 13 years was gone. After my second session the pain was relieved from other areas of my body. The third session with Ty eliminated the pain in my knee that I was scheduled to get crutches for while waiting for surgery. I wish I had found Ty sooner. Raymee Driggers VISION IMPROVED I started seeing Ty once per week about 10 weeks ago and since then my stress level has dropped dramatically. I am now sleeping thru the night most of the time. Last week Ty worked specifically on my eyes and vision. I have been legally blind for 25 years from a hereditary deteriorating disease that runs in my family. This week I realized my eye sight is approximately 30 percent improved. I am also surprised at how well I am now able to handle stressful situations. Stacy Carvels AFTER ONE 15 MINUTE SESSION Thank you. I feel more relaxed than I can remember being in decades. ~Lyn ENJOYING LIFE AGAIN I had a session with Ty last week. I can’t believe how much my feelings and attitudes toward people has been instantly improved. I feel so much freedom from stressful feelings and more connected and harmonious with others now. Sandra Borth, Therapist RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS My ankles, hips, wrists, and shoulder were so painful that I ended up in the emergency room one day when I could no longer walk. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and prescribed steroids that made me sick. A friend recommended I see Ty and much to my surprise my ankles felt better right away. Now after five treatments I am walking down steps like normal again. My wrists and shoulders are also much improved. I feel younger and friends tell me I look younger. It’s a miracle. Sheila Donner AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE I came to see Ty by recommendation from my doctor with a diagnosis of autoimmune disease. I was taking eleven different medications and having severe reactions. I am now taking three medications and have a great deal more energy and stamina. The aching pain in my joints is gone. My thinking is clearer, and I don’t have that cottony feeling in the front part of my head any longer. I am more involved with friends and community and expressing the creativeness within me again. Patricia Lyon SELF-CONFIDENCE, BLOOD PRESSURE, INSOMNIA, HAPPY NOW I had skepticism about alternative methods until I saw Ty. My blood pressure was very high and now it is reaching the normal stage. I feel better about myself, I sleep better, I am happy and more confident, and I now have a good outlook for my future. It is wonderful what he does. Les Harwood BACK PAIN AND DEPRESSION I can’t believe the difference in my life. I’ve been depressed with back pain for 35 years and now I no longer feel the pain and the depression is almost non-existent. Thank you Ty. Marsha Slavino WEIGHT LOSS, ANTI-DEPRESSANTS and PAIN MEDICATIONS I was devastated with grief in August when my husband died and was amazed how much emotional relief I gained at each session with Ty. I had a total of 15 sessions and the treatments have taken care of my emotional pain. I have lost 24 pounds, recovered from hip pain, sinusitis, and allergies. I am 72 years young and feeling better every day. So I brought my youngest daughter to see Ty. My daughter had been surviving on numerous medications for the past few years. We did 10 treatments on her and the results have been amazing. She no longer has a need for her anti-depressants and pain medications, she lost 26 pounds in 5 weeks, and she’s much happier. Shirley Adair FREEDOM FROM SELF-DESTRUCTIVE HABITS When I first started seeing Ty I was sad, lonely, unhappy and depressed as a result of many years of psychological and threatened physical abuse. I have learned to trust myself with inner confidence instead of the old outer show with inner self-doubt. I now accept things as they are and feel confident in trusting my own instincts. I feel free like a flower that has opened up and blooming. Jamie Thompson NO MORE ANTI-DEPRESSANTS I am fifty years old and I can’t believe how good I feel from seeing Ty five times. After 15 years of taking anti-depressants I have stopped and my head feels so clear now. The constant neck and back pain is gone. I now have goals I want to accomplish and I will. Stephanie Brown ITS OKAY TO BE ME With the help of Ty’s guidance I have learned how to find the happiness of my open heart and mind. Ty has helped me to realize that my addictive thoughts, feelings and actions were not done because I was damaged or even crazy. I now know it was learned, taught, and sometimes expected behavior. I am now much more open, aware, and ready for the wonder of life."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a type of martial art whose basic moves are widely practiced in personal and group fitness regimens. In combat kickboxing, two competitors fight using four points of contact — both hands and both feet — unlike traditional boxing, where competitors are allowed to use their hands. In competitive kickboxing, opponents must remain standing, and no fighting can occur on the mat or ground. Kickboxing has its roots in Muay Thai and other ancient martial arts. Some elemental moves from kickboxing include roundhouse kicks, back kicks, hooks, uppercuts and more.

Modern group fitness kickboxing is practiced in gyms and workout studios across the country. It draws its moves from combat kickboxing, but instead of fighting with an opponent, participants perform jabs, crosses, punches and kicks in instructor-led, choreographed routines set to music. Personal trainers also incorporate kickboxing moves into workout routines, spending time punching and kicking the bag. These strength-building moves, mixed with high-intensity intervals, boost heart rate and increase strength.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session. Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.
