Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

I’ve already recommended Moving Mass to a friend for her upcoming move. The guys were friendly, hardworking, and helpful when it came to knowledge about how best to load our moving trailer. Worth every penny!

They showed up on time with a truck able to move everything I asked them to in one trip. They completed the move quickly, within two hours. Even though the move was close in distance, I was impressed with the speed and organization. The furniture was wrapped to protect it during the move and the guys were nice and personable. Thank you guys! -Matt

Cornelius and Mario were prepared, very professional and friendly! Moving our large upright piano down several stairs without any damage was a complicated move and they planned out the best strategy for success and it went very well. They were easy to work with and it was a good value. I would definitely use them again for a move.

I am so pleased with how the moving team from Veserv assisted me. They were very kind, courteous and most friendly. I had sent a picture of my steep driveway and explained the challenge it would be when I was looking for a mover, yet only 2 guys were sent. It wasn't until they were 5 hours into the move, and not even halfway done, that they realized they needed help. It still took 12 hours to get me moved. By the time we got to my new home we were all exhausted, and I wanted the day to be over, so I told them to just leave the boxes in the garage and move in the furniture. I tipped them very well, because it was a lot of work for the movers (which is why I gave them 2 stars). But, the next day I was looking over my things in the light of day and I discovered a lot of damage was done to my furniture. I am not exaggerating when I say the back of one antique chair was so damaged I can't sit in it. In the end I was overcharged by an hour, and some miscellaneous additional fees that I was not aware of from the start were on the bill. Overall a bad experience.

The company was quick to respond, the guys were on time, even a little early which was great. There hourly fee was competitive, there was an additional fee which they were upfront about in quote. We had a casualty on a dresser leg but it was cheap furniture so can't really say it was anyone's fault. We had A LOT of stuff, the guys knocked it out in good time. They helped move what we had in a storage unit to their truck to our house. We also had a POD with there other half of our stuff that they helped empty into the house and garage. No damaged walls from the big stuff so I am impressed. First time hiring movers for help and so happy we did as we were burned out from moving out of the house and into storage. I plan to hire help if I move again, it was so worth it!

This is the second time I've hired Local Boys Movers, and I was just as happy this time. Cornelius and Mario are conscientious and treat your life's treasures as carefully as they would their own with smiles and friendliness. I wish I could give them 10 stars!

They were awesome! Showed up 30 mins prior to the move and we werent ready yet so they were kind enough to give us a little more time prior to starting the clock. They don't charge for the travel time to and from the office nor do they charge for miles or gas. The movers were incredibly friendly and did absolutely anything I asked including getting my washer and dryer completely hooked back up and bringing everything down into the garage for me to wipe down prior to putting them in the truck. I appreciated their flexibility and positive attitude and the good care they took of my items.

Highly recommend local boys. Moving is not fun. Local boys get to work right away. They are efficient and take great care of your goods. They genuinely enjoy the work they do and it shows. I’m in a profession that requires relocation. I will definitely be recommending their services to my colleagues.
