We had a stove pipe leak in our house, and because it's the rainy season, roofers are generally busy and we didn't expect to get a call back so quickly. B&M to the rescue! Brian was the first to respond to us, offered to have a look at the roof the next day, and fixed the entire problem the day after that. We really appreciated his speed and responsiveness because the issue was very time sensitive. We had such a good experience with Brian that we will probably have him install skylights for us, too!

Sergioh installed a window in our barn. He did a great job so I also had him install railing on a balcony, and put up some beams. We were very happy with all three jobs. He showed up on time, was communicative, and worked fast. I also appreciate the fact that he didn't want to cut corners, he does things the right way. That, and his pricing was fair. He was also clear about what he could and couldn't do when we discussed other potential projects (I appreciate that very much). I'll definitely hire him again.

Bob Chapman is one of the most professional, friendly and meticulous person I have ever met. He reminds me of my dad. Bob repaired our threshold, door trim (inside and outside) as well as the rubber seals. He also made sure to caulk and weatherize the trim outside as the door has eastern exposure. Apparently the door frame was not installed correctly, which caused rain water to seep behind the frame, which eventually rotted. Bob is excellent and the result his work is practically perfect. I have two other jobs and possibly a third read and waiting for Bob to complete. Excellent work, friendly and professional man--Bob Chapman of Bella Designs.

Good Guy windows offered great value for the service provided and has been pleasant to deal with every step of the way. We are remodeling our fixer-upper home's windows in phases and they were very helpful in giving us individual window quotes from the beginning so that we could plan our budget. Damien, our sales guy, was no nonsense and not at all high pressure. They simply had the bed value for the money so there was no need to sales tactics involving talking down competitors. The installers were timely, efficient, friendly, and considerate, laying down tarps across walking areas. We had some kinks and slow responses along the way. They are a smaller operation so do not always have the processes in place to operate as a well oiled machine, but we cannot complain too much because in the end we did get everything we asked for and more. We have gone through two phases of window installs and plan to stick with Good Guys throughout our remodeling adventure.

I had a broken basement window that they came by and fixed. Super responsive by email, quick to give a quote, etc. One star off for the technician calling me in the morning to change our installation time to earlier in the day, only to leave work and wait for the guy and have him come at the originally appointed time. That said, would definitely use again.

We hired All Phases to frame and install a new garage door. The door looks fantastic. John's crew got it done quickly and it looks exactly how we envisioned it. They were timely with their responses to our questions and the scheduling. It was a pleasure dealing with them and not having a nightmare that some contractors can be.

Tech Construction recently remodeled our kitchen and we are so happy that we chose to work with this excellent team and group of contractors. They were a pleasure to have in our home, very neat, paid attention to detail and communicated well throughout every step of the remodel. The remodel was quick, too, and seamless for each component of the cabinets, plumbing, electrical and appliance installation. We've worked with many firms over the years and Tech Construction LLC far exceeds the quality of work, level of professionalism and skills of each carpenter. It was such a wonderful experience. They also sound proofed our ceilngs in the kitchen and breakfast room. They had the experience and expertise to know these advanced skills and truly got it right. Thank you, GIovanni, Benny and Ricardo. We miss you already, but see your smiles and dedication in our kitchen daily.

I hired Bryan & Hands On Contracting to replace an existing aluminum sliding door after we had been informed by the "professionals" at Lowes that the vinyl replacement sliding door we wanted would not fit in the existing rough opening (our only option was an upsell in both door & labor). Bryan & his crew came by to field verify the opening and were confident they could install the door and if needed, had explained remedies if indeed the rough opening was too small. Long story short, Bryan was right, door fit perfectly. Looks great. Bryan and his crew were on-time, courteous, professional and very informative. I WILL hire AGAIN in the future.

The same day I posted my window project need on Thumbtack I was contacted by Dale Fawver, Western Washington Windows, who listened to the issue I was having with my windows (failure of the grid adhesive), advised he had dealt with this before and what he would charge based on the information I provided. He actually had time to come 2 days earlier than we'd scheduled for him to look at the project. The project was exactly as he had thought and he completed the work within the time he had estimated. I have other windows that need the same work done and will definitely contact Western Washington Windows when ready to schedule that work. Excellent pro to deal with!

They tore down 12 panels of wood fence and replaced it with vinyl in just 2 days. During the initial consultation they even described in detail what extra steps they planned to take in the installation of the new posts to prevent the weakening rot from reoccurring. The new fence is beautiful, we are very pleased with their work. We especially appreciate the 6 year warranty on their construction. Considering the extra steps they took to make this fence so much more permanent than the last one, we don't anticipate needing to call in the warranty.

I was very pleased with the windows installed in my 1963 mobile home. Both the sales rep George and installer Bob were very professional and experienced. The product was high quality and Bob was especiaally skilled at fitting in the windows and doing the finish work. Timing was fine and although cost was high, the outcome was more then I could have expected.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
