I had furnace ducts, 8 heat vents and 3 air returns cleaned, as well as relevant parts of the furnace itself. The two technicians were prompt (actually early, after calling to check first) and got the job done in an hour, including putting furniture back in place perfectly. Polite and professional, and explained the procedure before hand, as well as going over the bill in detail afterward.

Happy Healthy Home responded to my request, with what I thought a reasonable bid. As a property manager, I was under a very tight deadline to get the job done. Yaniv, the owner of Happy Healthy Home, assured me he could get the job done on time. As it happens, and because I am so far from his home base, we ran into a snag on timing. However, Davinci, one of Happy Healthy Home's technicians arrived from Seattle all the way to Gig Harbor at 6:30 AM to get the job done! Wow! Now that's service, because my new tenants were arriving at 9:00 AM. Davinci did a fabulous job, and even did more than originally contracted for. He was polite, professional and his communication back and forth with me was superb. Yaniv honored his word, and Davinci's performance took all the sting out of services provided a day late. I highly recommend this recommend this company. I would definitely use them again! 5 STARS!

Seatown Electric replaced the old knob & tube wiring in my 1930 home with up to date wiring. I chose them because the guy they sent to do the quote was very thorough, unscrewing all of the face plates in the house to look for additional areas of knob & tube. He found several extra circuits of knob and tube and built them into the estimate. If we had gone with another electrician they would have found the extra circuits part way through, and so we would not have had a realistic price expectation from the start. The two electricians who did the work were very thorough and courteous, and cleaned up after themselves each evening so that our house wasn't a wreck for the whole week. This made it a lot more pleasant to live through a re-wiring with two young children. I was very happy with my experience, and will plan to use Seatown Electric again in the future.

All New Again is an outstanding general contractor company. Don’t let their webpage fool you; they do it all, not just restoration after something bad happens to your home. They are a full service contracting company who employ certified plumbers, electricians and builders. They are licensed, bonded and insured. I could not be at home while they worked on my kitchen reno for 2 days and I always felt like my house and possessions were safe-everything was still in my home after the work was done. They are honest and upfront about costs. They arrived to every appointment on time and prepared. They made multiple planning visits and even asked one of the project managers to come in a review the project. My plumber, Dan Gibson, came over at the end of a long Friday after a long week just to hook up my sink after the plumbing inspection passed. Erin Peabody, my electrician, was highly informative and produced excellent results. Josh Keller assisted them in the job and he was professional and when I needed advise about some dry rot on the exterior wall, he provided me a thorough explanation of what needs to happen to fix it and how I can “bandage” it up until next spring/summer. They answered all of my questions with patience and were professional and courteous the whole time. I know they are not the cheapest or are they the most pricy. They are fair and their work is outstanding. I recommended them to a friend the other day, she called them and Dan called her back within hours and had an appoint set for the next week. She is incredibly pleased. Other contractors I called either never returned my call or failed to call me back after meeting with me. I will never use any other contractor ever for major home reno or repair. Amy

Terry On the two occasions I used your service, I found, starting with you to the technicians who did the work, there has been a consistency of professionalism and high customer service. Guys in my business take for granted sanitizing existing and new systems prior to occupancy. While I attempted to keep things clean, your cleaning and the visual of the filters removed at the return air and main system were filthy. Your team did a extensive evacuation of dust and allergens from the system. The owners of the home have respiratory concerns. They are the beneficiaries of your hard work. Your suggestion of working together and enjoying price benefits are appreciated. Most of my clients are friends of mine and I have found it best practice to pass all savings direct. I benefit as a result by having satisfied customers. We should stay in touch. Thank you for your help and please forward my gratitude to your technicians. Job well done. I can't express enough how satisfied I am with the work Peter and his team did. He came on time, worked the whole day with a difficult furnace removal, and had our new system installed by the evening perfectly. He is extremely knowledgable and gave us a great bid. He stayed in communication with me and followed through with everything from bid to making sure everything I knew how the system worked. It was nice not having to worry as I had nothing but confidence in him and his team. I'll be recommending him to anyone who says they need HVAC service.

Scott came to my house to get my furnace running.  It was an electrical issue, not mechanical.  Soon, he had things running nicely.  I bought a replacement programmable thermostat, which I was going to install.  Scott said he would do that for me.  A few minutes later, he completed that task, and the furnace and thermostat were working great.  He then completed his inspection of my furnace, indicating a few issues to watch for.  It is a fairly old furnace.   I was extremely happy with the service Skyline Heating provided.  I would certainly recommend them to anyone needing HVAC help. A job well done!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
