Jarrod worked on adjusting the loose hinge in our bathroom glass door and he installed a new glass panel for another bathroom. His work was pretty solid. Jarrod was very good and thorough in his follow-ups from the beginning to the end. He kept his time and his estimates were very close to the final amount. I would strongly recommend him. (In fact I have already given his contact to my friend who wanted some help.)

After a recent tub/shower renovation by another plumbing firm the faucet developed a major leak. The original plumbing company would not even call us back or answer an email. We discovered Thumbtack and asked for estimates based on the faucet manufactures analysis of the problem.Danika's bid was based on menu pricing so we knew what the job would cost. Cory and Jordan were on the job a couple days after we accepted the quote, they were professional and courteous, the job cost what had been quoted and we have found a new plumber to recommend. Thank you.

My hot water tank died and no one likes to be without hot water. I ran across Regulators Plumbing working in my neighborhood. I talked with Jason and found out he was a new local company. I like hiring local guys and his price was good. He came by the next morning first thing and was done right away. Easy. I can see my other plumbing projects getting completed soon too. Kevin

My hardwoods are GORGEOUS. Bathroom tile was also done very well. We had some initial problem with a small section of tile but Bogden was very quick to come back and correct it. I would recommend this company to anyone refinishing hardwoods or laying tile. Beautiful work.

Brandin was very responsive to our inquiry about a small full bathroom remodel. His quote was very reasonable and he was willing to work with us on our tight timeline. He did most of the work himself and put in long days to get it done in time. The bathroom looks great! He was awesome about communicating where he was at and helped us audible when our vanity didn't come with a faucet or drain. I would definitely use him for future jobs!

Simply the best company in Seattle area for home remodel. It wasn't easy to pick a company to remodel my kitchen and the bathrooms. There are plenty to chose from in the phonebook and online. However,I called for a free estimate and was impressed that someone came out that same day to look at my job. The price wasn't the cheapest or the most expensive, but the crew was clean, professional, on time, and didn't play games with adding extra costs. The end result was rather impressive. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking to get work done on their home. Thank you, Adrian Mocean

Cedo did a great job tiling our kitchen backsplash. I chose a tile that had alot of natural variation and asked Cedo to weed out the tiles that were very different that would stand out in a bad way. He took extra care and consideration to create this cohesive aesthetic with tiles that varied a great deal. He worked quickly and efficiently.

The job was a earthquake retrofit. I had spent six months on the wait list with another earthquake retrofit company, only to be dropped four weeks before they were supposed to start the work, so I was in a huge panic, because I had a larger scope project of an entire basement remodel scheduled to start as soon as the retrofit was done. Needless to say, I was terribly worried I wouldn't be able to find another contractor who would be able to do the work. I VERY luckily found Sound Pacific, who recognized my time crunch, and were happy to step in and take over. They were extremely competent, well organized, and got the job done in the correct amount of time, so that my basement remodel could proceed on time. The best part about working with them is they are very communicative at all times as to what is happening with the project, and were very good at asking questions as to what the customer wanted. I very much enjoyed working with them, and would gladly recommend them to anyone. If my basement contractor falls through on the job, I have already informed him I have a great team who I would be thrilled to have takeover. Thank you Derek and Michael for all your hard work. Sincerely, HG, West Seattle

Will completed these projects for my parents house: new roof, kitchen and bathroom remodel, replaced the old windows, exterior paint, along with helping get in contacts with good plumbers and electricians. Overall, Will did a good job on finishing the work as contracted. The only issue I had was his project manager was a good salesperson but when it came to executing he was difficult to work with. However, Will came in after I complained and help get the project back in the right direction which is meeting the expectation I was sold on. The crew did an ok job cleaning up but there were a lot of small debris I had to vacuum/sweep after the work was done.

I had a great experience working with Vlad from Design Kitchen and Bath. He did a terrific job on my remodel - my bathroom looks so much more modern and I have a lot more space. He was great at communicating every step of the process. He made suggestions that improved the final product and was able to pick up all the materials at Home Depot (I don't have a car), which was a HUGE help. I would definitely use Design Kitchen and Bath for future remodel projects!

I would definitely recommend Brian and his team at Craftsman Construction. I now come home everyday to my dream Kitchen! I have worked with other contractors in the past and I have to admit- we were a little scared to undergo such a big project, but from our first meeting to the very end Brian made us feel very much at ease. The quality workmanship, professionalism, and time on the project was awesome. Brian was able to see our vision and make it into a reality. His experience was also a big help in directing us on ideas that would add to our homes resale value but also stay within our budget. Aside from their customer service, the quality and finish work once the project was complete blew me away. We couldn't be happier! Thank you Brian!!

I hired Jesse to do a major kitchen remodel, bath, new doors and interior paint, plumbing, and electrical work. Jesse and his crew were very considerate and clean. Jesse explained to me things in easy-to-understand terms, and when he found potential problems with the house he explained what needed to be done to determine the best course of action. I chose Jesse out of 3 contractors that I interviewed as I found him easy to work with, thorough, and very reasonable with his prices. He gave me choices and called me to problem solve when necessary. I have owned several houses and worked with other contractors who try to to cut corners. Jesse does not do this. His work is superb and top notch! I would hire him again!

We were looking to have our master bathroom, guest bathroom and powder room updated. After finding this interesting product which looks so much like granite and travertine at a home show, we decided to ask for a quote from Designers Marble. After reviewing 3 different companies, we went with Designers Marble. (The cost was at least 1/2 of real stone. It looked so much better than the fiberglass material which is supposed to look like stone as well). We went to their showroom and picked out the cabinets and countertops. The owner came out before the project began to ensure all the plans were approved by us. The crew worked on the project as scheduled and were very friendly and asked us for our input throughout the projects. They were very conscientious of making sure they kept the project debris to a minimum and called us if they were running late. They also cleaned up before leaving for the evening. Additionally, the project manager/office administrator was very easy to work with and was very responsive. The communication with all of them allowed us to have a successful remodel of our bathrooms. The master bathroom is where the most effort and money was put in and it turned out great! It is beautiful! People are astonished the countertops and shower stall are not real natural stone. It is much easier to take care of than real stone and it looks amazing. We will definitely recommend Designers Marble to any of our friends looking to remodel their bathrooms for sure!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
