Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a contractor in Seattle to remodel my bathroom?

Find several qualified bathroom remodeling contractors in Seattle by searching online so you can review their profiles, their read customer reviews and check out their past project photos. If you can’t find photos of bathroom remodeling projects that pros have done in the past, feel free contact the contractors and ask for pictures.

Before you hire, it’s important to make sure the pros you’re considering have the proper credentials. For example, you can ask the contractors if they have a license in Washington.

After you’ve discussed the scope of work, ask at least three contractors to provide you with a cost estimate before you hire anyone.

What should I ask a bathroom remodeler before hiring?

It’s important to ensure that you and the contractor are on the same page before any work begins, so don’t be afraid to ask potential bathroom remodelers plenty of questions.

Start by reading the contractor’s reviews online. Ask to see examples of their past work — specifically, work that is similar to yours. If you need the bathroom remodel done by a certain date, ask the contractor if they will be able to complete the work by your deadline. And you should always ask how they handle payments.

Here are some examples of questions you can ask:

  • What materials do you recommend for my budget and overall vision?
  • How much are the materials and labor? What will my final cost be?
  • Do you have the proper license and insurance?
  • Can I see photos of past bathroom remodels you’ve worked on?
  • How long will it take to complete the remodel?
  • How do you handle payments?

Do I need a general contractor for a bathroom remodel?

For a small bathroom remodel, you may not need a general contractor. For example, if you simply need some plumbing or electrical work done in your bathroom, hiring a plumber or electrician should be sufficient.

However, if you’re tackling a large-scale remodel, a general contractor can coordinate a team of designers, painters and other specialty contractors to get the job done. Typically, the rule of thumb is that you should hire a general contractor if your project is large enough to require a building permit.

Are bathroom remodels worth it?

Remodeling your bathroom can lead to high personal satisfaction, as perhaps even a return on your investment when it comes time to sell your home. When you replace old and worn out surfaces with high-quality materials, it is almost guaranteed to improve the look and functionality of that space. A bathroom renovation can also improve your home’s curb appeal to future buyers and boost its overall value.

To determine if this project is worth the cost, start by getting free estimates from the best bathroom remodelers near you. And if you plan on selling your home, consult with your real estate expert to identify which remodeling projects you should prioritize.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

How much does a shower remodel cost?

If you don’t need foundational work (like a new shower pan) but want a tile makeover in your shower, the average national cost for tiling a shower is $3,875. The average cost for bathroom tile is $25 per square foot for installation; at that rate, a standard tub and shower combo tile job with walls that are roughly 6 feet to 8 feet high may have tile installation costs that average $2,000. If all your bathroom really needs is a new shower door, door installation averages $250-$510.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

I’m thrilled with the results of my bathroom remodel!

Edward & his team did an excellent job on my bathroom remodel as well as some other miscellaneous projects we had them complete. He and his team were very flexible with the scope and communicated costs very well along the way so there were no surprises at the end. I've included a before and after photo of the bathroom remodel they did. They moved the vanity to the other side of the wall, redid the floors, walls & ceilings, and also added a beautiful tiled shower with two separately controlled shower heads. For a single bathroom home with a small bathroom this remodel was worth every penny!

We are absolutely thrilled and impressed with the work that Vasy’s Team did. They did a complete bathroom remodel on our extremely outdated bathroom. They did all their work in under a week, and were able to start much sooner than expected! They did such beautiful tile work on the shower walls, our shower floor and bathroom floor. We were so impressed with their professionalism and their kindness. I could 10/10 their company to anyone who need a remodel. If I need more work done I will definitely be hiring them again.

Cedo did an incredible job remodeling my bathroom tub alcove. He was very responsive and worked with me every step of the way to provide guidance to get a fantastic end result. I have never looked to do this kind of project before and I was very glad to get quick responses, and expert knowledge of what was good and bad about the existing bathroom. My new bathroom feels like a hotel! I am very impressed by the quality of work. I fully recommend and would hire again!

Brandin was very responsive to our inquiry about a small full bathroom remodel. His quote was very reasonable and he was willing to work with us on our tight timeline. He did most of the work himself and put in long days to get it done in time. The bathroom looks great! He was awesome about communicating where he was at and helped us audible when our vanity didn't come with a faucet or drain. I would definitely use him for future jobs!

These guys are the best!! They remodeled 2 bathrooms for us that were a bit tricky with 100 year old house but they did a great job! I appreciate how hard they work, keep area tidy and get the job done quickly. I highly recommend them and would hire them again without hesitation.

I had a great experience working with Vlad from Design Kitchen and Bath. He did a terrific job on my remodel - my bathroom looks so much more modern and I have a lot more space. He was great at communicating every step of the process. He made suggestions that improved the final product and was able to pick up all the materials at Home Depot (I don't have a car), which was a HUGE help. I would definitely use Design Kitchen and Bath for future remodel projects!

Stefan was a consummate professional when interacting with him. He immediately built confidence and trust with me in his assessment and recommendations for our bathroom remodel project. His walk through was deliberate and you could see him visualizing the end product. His communication was excellent and proactive in guiding me along the process as a customer. I’m sorry to say that we did not choose Interiors by Jayme. We went with a local and reputable handyman who met some of our other needs as I have a list of random and small tasks needing completion around the house as well. If the scope of my work was just to our bathroom remodel I would have chosen Stefan and his team without question. I will definitely be soliciting their assistance in the future for some other projects we have lined up.

Eglen is fantastic! From the beginning when we first discussed the project he was responsive, professional, and personable. Throughout the project, he was communicative and punctual as well as sharing ideas to improve our bathroom. We really appreciated how he didn't skip steps or cut corners. He did everything the "right" way which gives us security going forward. The end result is a gorgeous bathroom remodel that my wife and I absolutely love! We've already begun talks with Eglen on our next projects in the house. I could not recommend Eglen and his work enough!

I am in the process of soliciting bids for a bathroom remodel in my 1-bedroom condo in Seattle. After setting up a consultation time with AMADOR's Home Remodeling, I scrolled through the photographs of their work, and OMG a photo of my kitchen remodel (which I designed, and another contractor performed)! I was not sure if there were any relation between AMADOR's and the contractor I used, so I asked and the reply was no relation. I also confirmed no relation by asking the contractor who I used. If you're going to have a contractor come into your home, they have to have integrity and be honest. Fortunately, I discovered this dishonesty and cancelled the consultation. The day after I cancelled the consultation, I noticed that the portfolio of work decreased, and my kitchen (along with many other kitchens) no longer appear in his portfolio. Luckily, I did take a screen-capture of my kitchen in AMADOR's portfolio.

Larry did great work on renovating our main bathroom and installing new tiles. We bounced ideas on how should new design look like and where the custom soap niche should be installed. He did f... amazing job! Once he took off old tiles we found a water damage in the walls. He didn’t mind taking that job as well, which we were very happy about since we were expecting the baby very soon. He replaced the surrounding dry walls as well as damaged studs. In addition he installed new shower and ceiling fans in both bathrooms. While I was at the hospital giving birth to my child, Larry continued to work in our house and took good care of it. We will definitely hire Larry again for our guest bathroom remodel.

Doru just finished a complete guest bathroom remodel for us. He and his team were a pleasure to work with. They are such a hardworking team and very detail oriented. Sometimes projects like this can drag on forever and my experience with other contractors was that they have multiple projects going on simultaneously and just spend a few hours a day working on mine. Doru appeared to be fully dedicated to it and would spent the whole day in our house working. I was also impressed by how tidy they were. Demos can make a mess and we hardly noticed anything. Doru is also very responsive. He always replied to my messages really fast. Finally, and most importantly, the finished product looked really sharp. What a transformation! I highly recommend his work and will use him again soon for our master bath remodel.
