Mary is teaching guitar to my 11 year old daughter. When we came to Mary my daughter had 4 years of choir experience but no musical instrument lessons. Mary is patient yet specific in her requests, my daughter is enjoying playing the classical guitar while learning much about technique. Mary is good at seeing my daughters learning style and using that to both their benefit. I would highly recommend her.

I have not been taking lessons too long with Ed, but so far have found him: 1) accommodating with scheduling; 2) willing to work at the pace of his students; 3) quick to give suggestions on how to improve one's practice; 4) interested in his students as individuals; and 5) a great value for the $.

Ms. Elaine did an initial "interview" with my 6 year old daughter, who had been having lessons when her teacher decided to go back to a 9-5 job. Elaine reviewed the old books my daughter was using, which luckily she uses too, to see what her level of understanding from her previous lessons was. She used some super fun and cute toys and tablet apps to test her. So far my daughter's lessons are going well. She really loves the various incentives that Elaine uses. She gets very excited to stamp her pages when she's completed one. She loves to practice everyday to earn more stamps each week. Elaine was very accommodating to help fit us in her schedule and gave us options to find what worked for us. Her prices are really good and about the same average as other teachers in this area. I would recommend Ms. Elaine to anyone looking for lessons for their children, especially their beginners.

Jake is a versatile guitarist musician and can play and teach classical music as well as any other style. He has a wide variety of surprising practice exercises, never boring, always different and fun. He always includes some part of the theory to explain the piece, to make it easier to understand. Jake would come into our house, always on time, and he was very professional in the way he approached me as a student, and I am very sorry that I had to quit my lessons. He charges less than other teachers I have looked at.

My daughter has only had two lessons with Aaron, so I do not have a long term relationship to base my review on. However, I can say that Aaron was very prompt at returning my emails and phone calls . Very professional in how he approached making financial arrangements and scheduling our lessons. He provided references for me to check with. He offered a complementary initial lesson. And perhaps most important, when I pick up my daughter from her lesson she has a smile on her face and says Aaron is very nice.

Mariya was my piano teacher when I was a kid--from ages 8-18. I loved my piano lessons so much, I only stopped when I graduated from high school and moved away. I really can't speak highly enough of her skills as a teacher and a musician, or her warmth and kindness as a person. I learned so much about the piano and music in general, and I still play almost 15 years later. Thanks to Mariya I have this lovely lifelong hobby. We keep in touch a bit and I'm so pleased to know that Mariya is still teaching piano. I remember her as my favorite teacher of any subject and her lessons as the high point of my school years. She is truly a gem!

I went from barely understanding piano to understanding it so much that I could sit down and teach my self a song, or listen to piano music and then play it. I’ve only been taking lessons for a few months too. Holly personalizes lessons that fit your interests in music and your exact needs to help you exhilarate! Piano is a language and most piano teachers only teach part of the language, but Holly teaches every single part of the language of piano.

The introductory lesson that I had with Ben was excellent. I've been playing for 7 months, and Ben did a wonderful job teaching me new ways to finger chords that Ive been having trouble with. He is a nice guy, and I will be taking lessons with him regularly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
