I would highly recommend Paul & Stephanie! I found them through Thumbtack whole I was researching catering for my wedding and I was impressed with their responsiveness to my questions. They prepared an incredible tasting and were flexible with changes to the menu. As it got closer to the wedding, I hadn’t had a chance to taste the desserts and Paul & Stephanie delivered a sampling of those to try. And they were incredible! They arrived on time for the wedding and all the food tasted amazing! The appetizers for the cocktail hour were a huge hit! I cannot express how incredible the food was as well as the professionalism of their staff. I highly recommend hiring them for your next event!

Chantel and her team catered our wedding July 8, 2017. Everything went as planned and the potatoes were amazing!! The food was a little cold when served and the chicken was overseasoned. My husband and I didn't care for the vegetables that were served. We had the Caesar salad served; I enjoyed it but my husband did not. The croutons were soggy. We had hors d'oeuvres passed around, but my husband and I didn't get a chance to try. Overall, I am pleased on how everything turned out.

Nola and her staff did such a fantastic job catering our wedding. From helping us plan to menu, providing a delicious tasting, answering questions about logistics and dietary restrictions, and providing stellar food and customer service to the day of the wedding, Nola and her team went above and beyond to make our day special. Our main entrée was fig balsamic glazed wild BBQ salmon with mango kiwi salsa. I wish I could make something this delicious myself, because it was amazing. Our salad consisted of organic mixed greens with julienned apple, shaved fennel, herbed crouton, and a really light but creamy bleu cheese dressing. They even made a separate salad with a different dressing for our dairy-free guests. The guest (and groom’s) favorite was our side: Beecher’s mac and cheese. So good! It was very stormy the day of our wedding, and a lot of things went wrong for us. Nola and her team went beyond the call of duty and helped out where they shouldn’t have needed to. They kept an incredibly positive attitude the entire time, conversed with guests, and helped reassure an incredibly stressed-out bride. The only complaint I heard from any guests was the portion-control at the buffet, but with a buffet we personally feel that was probably necessary. I had been concerned that people would take more than their fair share and leave guests at the end of the line with no food, and I’m sure that was the whole reason for starting out with smaller portions. I also heard that guests were invited to come back for seconds once everybody had been served, so I’m sure everyone got enough food. Overall, we were more than satisfied with Nola, her team, and the food. The food was everything we had hoped for, and the service was outstanding. We recommend them to anybody planning a wedding or other event.

I recently hired Island girl catering to cater my wedding in Stanwood WA. Not only was my food amazing (we ordered prime rib, Rosemary chicken, garlic potatoes, strawberry walnut salad and rolls) but Carol was such good company. I could not have pulled this thing together without her. She helped me with timelines and gave examples to help me with planning. She also reminded me to not forget the little things. And when I did forget stuff (like ice) she provided it for me last minute. I could not thank her enough. She did so much for me on my wedding day, she was a huge part in making this thing happen and help make my wedding day special. I also let her pick out the two types of beer that we had and it was a huge hit! If you're looking for a catering company that will not only treat you like a client but a friend, you will want to hire Carol and her team.

Chef Emme catered our wedding and we couldn't be happier with the choice we made of hiring this company! The food was out of this world. We got so many compliments and comments throughout the night and days after. If you are looking for a caterer that will provide delicious, not your typical "wedding food", Chef Emme is the way to go. Besides the amazing food, it was such an easy process working with the Chef prior to our wedding day. She was very responsive, answered every single one of my questions in detail and was overall super easy to communicate with. I could really tell she really loves what she does and wants to make sure you are happy and satisfied. I would absolutely recommend this company to anyone looking for a wedding caterer.

We had Stephen cater our wedding on 8/29. It was by far the most painless process ever. From the get go, Stephen was a breeze to work with and removed all the stress from dealing with feeding 100 wedding guests. His price was very fair especially given the amazing quality of the food. Im still getting compliments on how delicious and fun the food was at our wedding! Will book Dogfather again for any future events!

I have hired Joy Max Catering for my wedding catering for 130 people. Our wedding was on budget and we had only 4 months to plan it. Joy Max Catering has worked with us based on our budget and we were able to pick a menu we wanted. We were able to add and subtract thins we wanted or didn't choose to have. When I first tried my herb roasted chicken, I was wondering how come I could never make a chicken like that. It was tender, juicy and lots of flavor. The food had flavor and it was very homemade & thats what we were looking for. Everyone who I asked about my food, they said it was excellent! I am glad I have met the owner Joy, she is a great person to work with and talk about food. She is very professional, sweet and very very hard working. I would recommend Joy Max for an outstanding ability to work with people, base their menu, arrange payments and also cook a deliciously tasty food. Thank you Joy Max for your services.

I absolutely adore Chef Dayo! She is so sweet and kind and was very accommodating with all of our questions and menu changes for our wedding catering. And her food is delicious! We didn't want to do standard wedding fare, and her southern/Caribbean food really hit the mark. The jerked tofu/chicken were fantastic, and the fried okra is to die for. I really wish she had a restaurant so that I could eat her food more often:) The only thing is that I wish her staff had made sure the groom and I had enough to eat before putting the food away and moving to the dessert course, but besides that everything was perfect and I would highly recommend her to others.

Christine at Urban Pantry provided catering for my son and daughter-in-law's wedding reception November 2017 and everything was absolutely amazing! The food was creative and delicious! Christine met with the bride and myself and created a custom menu that was perfect for the vision my daughter in law had for her special day! It was at a very reasonable cost , everyone who catered the event was very professional and it was an overall great experience. Thank you Christine and Urban Pantry!!! I also personally purchase the home cooked meals to help with dinners during my busy work week. The food is always top notch and delicious! I'd recommend Urban Pantry to anyone needing to Cater an event or just some help with meals during the week! Karen S - Snohomish, WA

When it came to food for our wedding, that was the part my husband wanted to choose. He is a chef, so it really meant a lot to him that our menu was phenomenal. After venue searching at resorts, we became discouraged with their preset menus with typical wedding food. We then decided to go with a venue where we could hire a caterer. Once the venue manager found out my husband's occupation, she immediately referred us to Twist Catering, stating they were for "foodies." We live here locally, so we were able to visit them for a tasting. It was out of this world. Chef Joel prepared everything for us, as discussed each menu item with us. We met with him numerous times, he helped me with the set up of everything, suggestions, he was there every step of the way for us during the wedding planning process. He even stopped by at the wedding to check on us. And the final menu chosen for the wedding was insane. I'm at the age where a lot of my friends are getting married, as well as attending weddings & all of the guests commented on how exceptional the food was. My husband & I have both worked in restaurants for many years, and know good service can be difficult to find. The food was delivered promptly, and the servers & bartenders were on point. They constantly checked on myself, as well as my husband & his family to keep our drinks full. Between the food, the exceptional service, & the kind treatment we received, it was truly memorable.

Hamid is very talented and compassionate about his work. We had an important business lunch, and needed to do something a little more impressive than just something from a restaurant. Rather than going through a catering company, we figured it would make sense to go through a personal chef, and this was such a great idea. I I've seen firsthand how Hamid is so devoted to ensuring excellent ingredients and preparation of the meals he makes. He was very easy to work with and catered to all of our needs. Moroccan cuisine’s food is on the healthy side. Not a lot of added salt or oils, which is great. No one wants to feel heavy after a big business lunch, with the rest of the day to go. The pricing was reasonable, and worth every penny. For business, or personal use, I cannot recommend Moroccan cuisine personal chef enough.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
      • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
      • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
      • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

      • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
      • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
      • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
      • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
      • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
