Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want.

Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June.

Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

How many photos should you get from a wedding photographer?

A professional wedding photographer will usually supply their clients with several hundred photos (200, 300, 400 or 800 and more). Some might even provide more than 1,000 photos. It ultimately depends on the photographer.

Wedding photographers will usually take several thousand photos but cut them down to the keepers. They also have to edit these photos. Typically, they will provide them to the clients on a digital hard drive, as an online download or even in a photo album with beautiful decorations.

What pictures should be taken at a wedding?

On your wedding day, your photographer should take pictures of the couple getting ready for the wedding, as well as a fun personality picture before activities begin. They should also photograph showstoppers like the bouquet, invitations, shoes, reception space, cake, centerpieces, rings and the veil. A generational photo with parents or grandparents is also special. There should also be photos of the bride and groom alone, the ceremony, the confetti-filled exit, and hair and makeup.

How long do wedding photographers stay?

A wedding photographer usually expects to work a full day. This gives them time to photograph the venue, cake, rings, shoes, centerpieces, invitations and other aspects of the wedding before the guests arrive. It also allows them time to get photos of the bride and groom alone, as well as the hair and makeup process and fun personality pictures. Then, they will work through all the parts of the wedding.

When should you take wedding photos?

Couples can take wedding photos before their actual ceremony, during cocktail hour (before the reception), during the wedding reception or even after their wedding. The least stressful time to do it is often before the ceremony when hair and makeup generally look their best, temperatures are usually lower because it’s earlier in the day and the couple won’t have to think or worry about it for the rest of the day.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

Sim and her husband photographed my small wedding ceremony in December. She was very easy to coordinate with, punctual, and the photos came out great. Excellent value for money!

Jaclynn did an hour of wedding photos for us which we had originally planned to be engagement-style, but she also let us squeeze in some family photos. They turned out amazing! We are so happy that we were able to get beautiful wedding photos without breaking the bank. We are really bad at posing, but Jaclynn knew exactly what she was doing and helped to guide us. We will definitely be thinking of her for future photography needs!

Allen was our photographer for an intimate wedding. He was communicative before, during, and after the event. Allen assured us we were his focus the day-of in order to capture all the moments of our day. Allen cared about telling our wedding day story with the final images. He finished editing nearly 1000 photos total within 2 weeks, and delivered 50/50% color and black and white. We love all the photos as did friends and family we shared them with. When another big moment like our wedding day comes up where we’ll want a photographer, Allen will be our first contact. Highly recommend choosing Allen if you’re looking for candid, documentary style photos and/or are camera shy. Thank you so much Allen!

Steven did an amazing job. He was easy to work with and made us feel comfortable throughout the engagement and wedding photos. He has a good eye and will do what it takes to get the photo right, even if it means walking through a creek in his leather shoes. Our photos came out better than we could have imagined!

Bree was great to work with! She was on time, flexible and efficient. She obviously had many years of experience photographing weddings, and was also able to help me with my wedding and reception timelines. She's a great person to work with, and lots of fun. I would highly recommend her to anyone.

Coty is amazing. She was a steady force while our wedding venue closed two months before and the caterer quit two weeks before the wedding. She was flexible and easily adapted to all the changes, including staying an extra hour to cover the reception for a longer period. And the most extraordinary part was that the photos were absolutely beautiful and captured the joyous day. She worked alone, but managed to photograph so many shots from so many perspectives. Definitely someone I would consult and use again.

My wife and I both thought finding a quality photographer for our wedding ceremony on two weeks notice was impossible. We then found Jennifer. Not only was Jennifer top-of-class when it comes to communication, she was an incredible addition to our ceremony. Her fun and flexible approach made it seem like she wasn't even there at times. With this approach, we were able to capture a wide range of very organic moments throughout our ceremony. 100/100 would recommend Jennifer to anyone who is in search of portrait/wedding/event/etc. photography.

Edward and his wife provided excellent service. The wedding photos were excellent, they put us at ease with their charm, and they went above and beyond with everything requested. If we had it to do all over again, we would book them in a second.

Will was amazing! He was punctual, friendly, sensitive to guests with special requests (we had some difficult guest at our wedding), helpful in so many more ways than just taking photos! He even let us share his Uber! We will definitely use him again for family photos, and/ or another special event. We will also recommend him to our friends and colleagues. Angie & Jesse Woldman

We just got our sneak peek photos, and I can with full confidence highly, highly, recommend Alex. The photos really freeze and capture the fleeting moments with awesome artistry. From the beginning, he has been professional, quick to respond to messages, and personable. Our wedding went by in a blur, and now we have the moments that would already be gone captured beautifully. A couple photos of our family already made me cry, and I haven't even seen them all yet. It was nice not worrying about anything- stress free and totally handled! We made a really great choice.

Jaclynn is everything you want in a photographer. Her work is absolutely stunning, she was very responsive to all my specifications. She went over and beyond with helping out in the midst of wedding chaos but above all she happily put up with my very large crazy family with a smile on her face. Just to put things into perspective most of the compliments surrounding my wedding involved my dress, the food and Jaclynn. It was a pleasure working with her and I would recommend to her anyone !

Holy cow, My husband and I had the chance to look through the preview gallery pictures from our wedding last weekend and from the bottom of our hearts we are in love with them! these photos are beyond what we could ever imagine! We could never begin to thank Jaclynn enough for her amazing work, kindness, time, generosity and hard work during this incredibly rememberable time for us. Thank you so much for working with us and our budget. We are so eager to see all the photos and begin to create a lasting memory in one of her gorgeous books. We don’t know how we’ll pick out our favorite for prints! They are all amazing. We would HIGHLY recommend using Jaclynn as photographer for any special occasions, especially weddings! No one else could have captured our love, what was most important to us and our story. Thank you so so much! The Jacksons

Amanda did a great job capturing our 140-person wedding at the Fremont Foundry in Seattle, WA. Her shots of the ceremony and of our couple photos were beautiful; she managed to capture important moments from several different angles but was never in the way; and she did a great job on the candid shots (we asked her to focus on these and spend less time on portraits, and she delivered!). She was also friendly, responsive, and organized in the months leading up to the wedding. I would highly recommend her and we are already recommending her to friends.
