Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How high should you install a TV mount on a wall?

The actual height you mount your TV will depend on the layout of your room. If you’re mounting it above a fireplace or in an alcove, the height of these structures will determine the mounting height of your TV. However, Bob Villa recommends positioning your TV 42 inches on-center in conventional rooms with standard seated viewing.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

Can you mount a TV in drywall?

Yes, it’s possible to mount a TV on drywall. To make sure the job is done right and you don’t end up damaging your wall or injuring yourself, consider contacting one of the best TV wall mount installers near you. When contacting professionals, make sure you tell them you wish to mount a TV in drywall.

Can a TV mounting service also install a home theater system?

Yes, a TV mounting service is often able to install a home theater system as well. Companies and technicians who offer flat-screen TV wall mount installation service may offer package deals on installing surround sound and other parts of a home theater installation. To find the best TV mounting service near you that can install a surround sound system in your home, compare companies side by side. Choose a service that’s within your budget and book an appointment instantly.

What type of TV mount do I need?

There are several types of TV mounts, including fixed mounts, tilting mounts and full-motion mounts. A fixed mount is sturdy but offers no movement, and a tilting mount tilts vertically. A full-motion TV mount swivels and tilts for the maximum number of possible viewing options. You can also mount your TV from above with a ceiling TV mount. Whichever TV mount you choose, ensure it can support your TV’s weight and size. If you need help choosing and installing a TV mount, contact a TV wall mount installer near you.

What tools do you need to mount a TV on the wall?

You need several tools to mount a TV on a wall. Often, the tools that are needed include safety goggles, a stud finder or hollow wall anchors, a level, a power drill and bits of various sizes. You’ll also likely need a socket wrench and screwdriver set. If you don’t have these tools, hire a TV wall mount installer near you who can do the job and bring their own tools.

Are TV wall mounts universal?

TV wall mounts are generally universal. This is because most TV wall mounts comply with standards set forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Thanks to this set of standards, any mount you buy is likely to be a universal TV wall mount. However, exceptions do apply. Certain brands may not follow VESA standards, and though this is rare, it’s worth checking to make sure you’re buying a VESA-compatible universal TV mount.

Can you mount any TV?

Many TVs can be mounted with standard equipment. However, you need to cover a few details before mounting a TV. Know the size and weight of your TV before you purchase a mount. Additionally, make sure your TV follows the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) standards by looking for the VESA logo followed by a number. Match this number to the VESA-compatible mount to ensure compatibility. If you’re unsure if your TV can be mounted, contact the best professional TV mounting services in your area to see if they can offer guidance and help you with the installation.

How do I hide the wires to my wall-mounted TV?

You can hide wires from a hanging TV on a wall by putting them behind the wall. However, this requires some drilling or buying an in-wall power kit. Alternatively, you can use what’s called a “raceway” — a hollow metal or plastic channel — that runs down your wall and hides your cables from sight. To get the job done right, and avoid risking damage to your wall, hire a professional TV wall mount installer near you.

They showed up on time and got the tv installed. I was hesitant to do the job myself as the walls are plaster. They had it up and mounted and it looks great!

Jeff mounted and installed a flat screen tv. The job was tricky due to the wall we were working with. He came by to scout the variables ahead of time and sent me a link to the tv wall mount he recommended based on our desired look and functionality. Jeff's a great problem solver and very diligent. Bottom line, the TV looks better than my expectations and he stayed long enough to hook up all the components and even give us a quick tutorial. I would use him again.

We hired Wallace to install an LG Gallery TV above a gas fireplace in our townhouse. It was a difficult job. The LG Gallery TVs are made to be flush against the wall, like a painting. The job required installing a new recessed power outlets while running new power and video cables through several studs marked through a steep angle. Wallace did an amazing job. He installed the TV perfectly, with no damage to the walls except was what required to install a new recessed power outlet and the TV mount. He cleaned up after himself leaving no trace. We are extremely happy with our new TV and the work done by Wallace and would absolutely hire Wallace again in the future.

Tyler and his team installed a Mantle-mount style TV mount that is adjustable to be able to adapt from a high up position to a low comfortable viewing height. His team had to add some additional support within the wall to make the setup strong enough. Everything went well and his team worked diligently.

Arrived on time to install a wall mount a 56" TV and do in-wall cabling. He also had an extension cable and HDMI cable available for purchase to run in the wall while he was there so I wouldn't have to do so since I hadn't gotten them yet. Job was done quickly and to spec. I would definitely hire again for similar type work.

Had a great experience with Jeff. He was very quick to respond and extremely thorough from beginning to end. He helped make sure we had the right mount before the appointment. On the day of the install he was on time and extremely thorough to ensure the TV was exactly where we wanted it and perfectly level. The wall we installed on was a little tricky above a fireplace but Jeff was able to navigate it with ease and find the studs to mount to. Highly recommended!!

Arranging an appointment was easy and the team came the next day. They sized up our existing Fireplace TV mount, I didn't realize I had the wrong one and they went to get the correct one, I did not have too! They took down the old mount, had to do additional drilling in the Brick, quite a job, but within a few hours had it installed, TV up and Amazing! They cleaned the outside of the fireplace, the floor area and more, even better than before the installation. TV extends 1" 4" from the wall and positions along all 3 axes, now we can sit anywhere in the room and see the TV without straining our necks. Turned out even better than we envisioned, Soo Happy! Thank you!

I hired Uhan to install my TV mount/TV to our wall and I am so glad I did. Not only was he able to come within 48 hours of reaching out, but he charged an incredibly reasonable rate, and I couldn't be happier with the result. He was very efficient but also had me check the placement of holes, screws, the level of the TV, etc., at every step to ensure I'd be satisfied with the end result. When he was finished with the TV I asked him if he could install a magnetic knife bar in our kitchen (even though I hadn't included it in my original request). He was more than willing to install that too, and similarly, very efficient and high quality work. Couldn't recommend more! Thanks Uhan!

This was my first time using thumbtack, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I wanted to get a same day appointment to get my new 60" tv mounted to my wall, and Paul responded with a quote almost immediately with his information & a quote. He was able to accommodate me that same afternoon which I really appreciated. He was professional & friendly, prepared with all of the tools, and did a quality job with the installation. His price was extremely reasonable, and competitive too! I'm honestly blown away with how easy he made this process for me. Definitely recommend him to anyone! Thank you again Paul!
