We hired Nathaniel Rotta with West Coast Design and Graphics to draw up remodel plans for our home. He came out right away to get the information to do the bid. His prices were extremely reasonable and very competitive! Nathaniel's work and communication was exceptional. He had our plans drawn quickly and professionally. We would recommend him to anyone who needs an architect and will definitely hire him again!

We have used Brittell Architecture many times for industrial buildings and have found their work to be exceptional. Brittell Architecture is very cost effective, and brings heavy industrial experience to the table. Buildings for a plant or heavy industrial environment are a specialty item, and it is hard to find a firm in the NW who knows what is needed, and what is not needed. If you are looking for a firm who will give you fast, accurate and professional work, Brittell is who I would ask for. We use them now, and will continue to use them as a preferred architectural contractor.

Bruce Sternberg designed and served as general contractor for two major projects for us: a complete renovation of the second floor of our house and the design and construction of an art studio building on our property. The second floor of our 1912 bungalow was dark and had much unusable space and no closets. Bruce's design opened up the space to include two good size bedrooms, huge closets, and larger completely renovated bathroom. He also added windows and skylights. The space is now bright, functional, and truly beautiful. The studio is a freestanding building designed to capture the light and provide all that is necessary for the large paintings and mixed media pieces my husband does. The studio has electricity, heating and plumbing, and Bruce designed it so that it could be converted to other uses (such as a guest house) in the future. When we originally met with Bruce, we had only vague ideas about what we wanted -- more space, more light, and more of "us" in the house. Similarly, my husband just knew he wanted a space to paint and display/store completed artwork. Bruce spent a lot of time with us to understand our sense of esthetic and how we would use the spaces. He also looked a lot at the exterior of our house and was committed to making the interior beautiful and functional while also respecting and enhancing the integrity of the exterior. We had met with other architects but none "got us" like Bruce did or offered such a beautiful, comprehensive plan. We also really appreciated the fact that Bruce would also serve as general contractor and would be on site throughout the construction. Like all projects, this took a bit longer than we would have liked and there were a few hitches along the way as would be expected in an older home like ours. However, that was all forgotten when the work was completed and exceeded our expectations. We truly couldn't be happier with how both projects turned out. A good friend of mine regular reports that she has "bathroom envy" when she visits and looks at the two skylights and beautiful wood and tile work in the bathroom Bruce designed. I get similar oohs and aahs about the two huge closets in the master bedroom. Bruce added two new windows to the second bedroom and designed lighting that makes the space perfect for a relaxing reading room, display space for more art, and a wonderful guest bedroom when family and friends visit. We are equally thrilled with the studio building. Fellow artists and clients who come to see my husband's art, always note what a wonderful space he works in. The way Bruce sited the building created different outdoor spaces for us - with a dog run on one side of the studio and the entrance to our garden on the other side.

We were looking for an architect to design our new 250 sf energy efficient backyard ADU. Our backyard is small and we wanted to locate the new adu so that it faced a small dogwood tree in the corner of the backyard. This also provided us with the needed privacy between the new adu and our home. Daniel Lajoie with Departure Architecture was great to work with. The design that we came up together located a small sleeping loft above the living spaces. Most of the windows face the dogwood and along with the overall volume created in the space, our little adu feels so much larger than it actually is. Daniel also showed us how we could design and build an extremely energy efficient adu with our given budget and helped us to hire the right contractor. For others considering projects, we would highly recommend working with Departure Architecture.

I have used I Bl as a general contractor for 3 years now for work on residential and commercial jobs of various sizes. They have done complete remodels to convert four of my apartments into Airbnb units, as well as helped me to fix up several houses I have sold. I also own some commercial property and they have helped me with a variety repairs and I have referred them to tenants and friends, always with great results. I have used many different contractors in the past and no one I have worked with can compare to IBI Construction. They are knowledgeable and skilled and as a result can see problems with underlying conditions before they become worse and if this happens in the middle of a job they clearly explain the situation to me and tell me what my options are. When we set up a job and decide on the scope they get right to it as soon as possible and don't tell me they are booked out for 6 months. One of the things that sets them apart from other contractors I have used is they always make sure to have all materials and subcontractors ready to go before they start, this makes my job so much easier as I can actually make plans and schedules and not have to worry about long delays. After work begins they are great about keeping me informed about how the project is going and any modifications to the scope are clearly defined and the schedule is kept up to date. Most important of all, I have learned that I can count on IBC to give me straight answers to my questions and not try to take advantage or overcharge me. I have never had a problem with the quality of work and they always meet or exceed my expectations, for all these reasons I trust IBI Construction and I recommend them highly. If you are looking to have a low stress experience on a construction project, residential or commercial these are the folks for you.

Working with Dave put me at ease. He is very trustworthy which was a problem with previous contractors we had used. He was able to get two projects done within the timeframe we had set piggybacking them even when unexpected things came up (which they always do during commercial projects in our experience). He's reliable, patient, and friendly. I didn't hesitate to ask him for help with a couple residential projects after he finished our commercial build-outs. He knew exactly what I wanted and described to him in my novice fashion. Thank you Dave!

Brett Schulz came up with excellent architectural design solutions with our home remodel. The project included a new kitchen, and an addition to increase the size of the master bedroom (including a porch/deck) and master bathroom. Every detail, including correct size and location of windows, light switches and fixtures, sloped deck to facilitate drainage, and an unobstructed view with the roof covering the new porch/deck was well planned. I highly recommend his services.

It was a pleasure working with Zach! I was looking to upgrade my fireplace, mantle. I had a vision for the space to include raw wood, tile and floating shelves. I met with Zach and described my desire for the space. He presented me with multiple sketches within a few days to a week. I chose what I liked from a few sketches and Zach was able to design a great focus wall for my space. I would highly recommend Zach Freund. He was very professional, caring. His creativity and knowledge were plentiful.

Hans gave us a quick reply to our request, and was prompt to provide us with a quote for architectural services that he stuck to. We met onsite to go over the project. He measured the work area, and created excellent drawings for an ADU building permit we needed to apply for; that was indeed approved. He has a professional appearance and demeanor on the job site. The conversation about what to expect and when was straight forward. It is great when experience shines through! I enjoyed dealing with this architect A-Z, and will definitely be calling him again. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
