Eric did an excellent job on the bathroom projects we hired him to complete. Very reasonable rates, conscientious, solid work and he cleaned up after himself. He even disposed of a large mirror we no longer needed for us. Definitely will be calling him again in the future and would confidently recommend him to others.

Replaced bad decking boards. He has also painted our kitchen and living room. He does immaculate work in everything he has done for us.

Michael redid my bathroom baseboard trim and finished off my bare windows. He was very precise and meticulous with adding the casing around and inside the windows and was able to get my curled up vinyl bathroom floor smoothed out after adding some quarter round in front of my bathroom cabinet. The base board trim was also done very well. He is very detail orientated and take pride in his work. I would highly recommend him. Here is a picture of the windows ( unpainted in this pic) after and a picture of windows a few months ago (most recent pic)

Bill was remarkable, very knowledgeable and nice to have working in the house. He problem solved well and did many little jobs I'd had on my list for a few months. He even returned the next day to complete hooking up a bathroom fan that I didn't have the correct hardware for. I can't recommend him more highly. If you hire Bill, he will respond quickly and you will be more than satisfied with the quality of his work and his kindness.

Frank Landaverde and his team worked very hard and put in new ceramic tile in our kitchen and entryway in record time. The tile installation seems absolutely flawless to me; they clearly take a great deal of pride in their work. I could not be happier and would recommend this team to anyone needing work on their house. Frank brought great ideas and very positive energy to the project. We will definitely hire them again, as our house needs more work! But for now, the floor they put in looks great and we can't wait to entertain in this space.

We had a complete bathroom remodel, and Pete did a great job. He was good at letting us know when he was coming, and great about making changes when needed. My young kids were sorry when the project was completed because they liked having him come over! The price was great, too.

I needed 4 doors hung in a basement reno I am completing on my own and I wanted them done correctly. Phil Connors was on time, communicative and did a good job hanging 4 pre-hung doors in the janky framing I put up. I will be bringing him back to do some custom shelf construction for a sit on top sink in a bathroom. He prefers not use telephone communication; he texts or emails, however, he responds to email quickly, within 24 hours. I would recommend Phil for your next carpentry project

Justin did an excellent job for us with very short notice! We are listing our home for sale this week and Justin was able to accommodate us. He installed carpeting in our family room and vinyl flooring in a laundry area. He was at our house exactly when he said he would be and gave didn't charge any extra fees. Job very well done! I would highly recommend this carpet/flooring installer.

We used Taylor Wood Floors for our original, new home, install and were completely satisfied with their work – that was over 20 years ago. We used them again to do a refinish, we changed the stain color to give us a brand new look! Recently we had Taylor Wood Floors install new wood floors in two rooms that were carpeted. Love it –the ease of cleaning is wonderful! I will never go back to carpet again! I have and will continue to recommend Taylor Wood Floors. Where: Marshall, WI All went well, no improvements needed.

I got a very nice upstairs bathroom floor done, using luxury vinyl tile. Choice Floors had a number of different types of flooring available, and I was able to find the one that I needed. Considering that I let the previous floor decay longer than I should have, there was additional work to do to repair it, including removing and repairing some flooring outside of the bathroom (that's what happens when you let a floor leak for too long). Jason spent a day and half removing the old floor and putting in a nice new one that is pleasing to look at. Also, his price bid was much more attractive than the competitors' bids.

We were remodeling our house, and of course on a tight budget. When we went to Floors for Less, they have products that can match any budget! My wife and I are thinking about selling in 5 years, so we wanted something nice, but if we consider staying longer, we could upgrade. Once they knew what my budget, material wanted, and color, they were able to point me in the right direction. We got the look we wanted, at the price we wanted to pay. Their installer was great as well. Very professional, and communicated with us each day. Couldn't be happier with the overall experience!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
