Charles is by far the most excellent contractor we have ever used. Bar none. He designed and implemented the construction of our new kitchen. He either DID every single aspect by himself, or oversaw anyone who came into the house. Floors to ceilings! Anytime we discussed something and my husband or I would say, "is it possible to maybe do???" He found a way! When we decided it was time for a new kitchen, we never expected to get pretty much everything we wanted, and more. But we did. Not only is Charles's workmanship extraordinary, but he himself is THE most respectful and considerate of any workers of any kind we have ever had in our home. And believe me, when no one in our household is DIY, and we've lived here 30+ years, we have had to deal with lots of workmen! Our original idea was to change old cabinets, countertops and appliances. But with the questions and suggestions of Charles we ended up with a major remodel. He understood our greatest desires in a kitchen. And so we were able to get our dream kitchen. We are so very pleased with the kitchen results, we really really want to remodel our game room with the help of Charles of Parham Design. Soon.

My husband and I just had a new home built. With that came countless windows that needed blinds. We are so grateful to have had the expertise of Julie from Avenue Interiors to help us find the most cost efficient way to get privacy and style for our 25+ windows! Not only did she guide us toward more affordable options (knowing our concerns with budget), but she also clearly explained how each style worked and offered professional and artistic advice to help us make the right decision for us. She went above and beyond to help us find deals in order to save as much as we could once we made our selection. The ease of scheduling appointments and installation was invaluable to our busy lifestyle, and we were so thankful for the temporary blinds she installed before we even moved into the house so that we weren’t living in a fish bowl on our first night in our new home. Best part of all, they are functional and easy-to-use and THEY LOOK GREAT! We have received countless compliments on our new blinds from the numerous visitors we had touring our new home. Thank you so much, Julie!

Lauren and Melissa were so wonderful to work with. From the very beginning, I knew that decor and craftiness were not my strengths and I was looking for someone to take on that aspect of the wedding planning in order to alleviate stress from me. Honestly, hiring this team was the best decision I made. They were extremely responsive, kind and had fantastic ideas. I had a very specific vision and budget for the wedding, but had no idea how to pull it off without breaking the bank. They stepped in and covered all things floral, lighting and design so that I didn't have to. It was well worth the money. In the end, the wedding was GORGEOUS, rang so true to the vibe of me and my husband, and we had hundreds of compliments from our guests about the "coolest" wedding they'd ever attended. Any last minute snags on the wedding day, they jumped to taking care of it for me so I didn't have stress out. It couldn't have gone any better than it did. So grateful for them!

Karina is an extremely creative interior designer that understands the construction side of things. She was a great listener, had a vision and paid special attention to every detail. She really listened to our ideas, went through our magazine clippings and turned them into something concrete. She suggested layouts, color schemes, décor, designed our kitchen and bathrooms and stressed the importance of lighting. The kitchen was just what I wanted combining a clean design with functionality. I also hired her to manage the renovation and she took charge of the whole process flawlessly managing it. She has great instincts and would quickly problem solve as questions came up and kept things on schedule. She was a stickler for getting the work done right. She combined function, style and comfort, furnished our interior with some beautiful and unique pieces that all seemed to come together. We love our home and are still in awe of the transformation. She truly got what we wanted and brought it to life. I have referred her team to close friends and they are just as happy as we are.

Heather Visnesky, owner of Adobe Pittsburgh, acted as my designer on a complete gut rehab of a property in Lawrenceville, City of Pittsburgh. She was an active participant in the project from the very beginning, helping out with layout decisions, exterior finishes, and of course all the fun interior selections (vanities, cabinets, light fixtures, hardwood flooring, etc.) She was extremely quick to understand my vision and style for the property, which made our collaboration extremely simple and streamlined. She also understands the importance of making selections within a budget, which is so important in my business. Heather was a joy to work with and I would highly recommend her to any individual that needs home design advice/assistance!

Mr. Anstis, of All Finished Interior Design, did several projects for us in the past few years. One of the first was a headboard was created for a king size bed, that complimented the accessories in the room, without taking up much space. It was the perfect solution for tying the room together to complete the look we desired. Most recently, he helped us stage our home for selling it. He painted several rooms, including the living room, two bathrooms, kitchen and hallways. He did a fabulous job fixing the flaws in the drywall that had been caused by the settling of the house and water damage from a leak in the roof. His eye for color is appreciated, as he was able to accomplish an atmosphere of warmth that our home was lacking. His attention to detail is impressive! He was able to use items already in my home, to stage the house for a quick sale. He recommended a few changes that he was able to complete in a short amount of time. I am extremely thankful we found All Finished Interior Design to help us with fixing up our home!

Kathleen and Ellen are both very professional and talented decorators. I have hired them on several occasions, for decorating advice as well as color consulting for painting several rooms. They offered many helpful suggestions, at a very reasonable price. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to redecorate, stage a home for selling, or rearranging a space.

Michelle is SUPER! I met Michelle while she was working at Ethan Allen and we hit it off immediately. Her design taste is exquisite yet her designs comfortable and cozy! She came to my home several years ago to help me redecorate my family room so it would tie into my kitchen and eating area. (My attempts were pathetic....) She created an amazing plan with beautiful paint color, furniture, pictures, lamps, pillow fabrics, and rugs that created a fluid and GORGEOUS transition between the two rooms. She did such a phenomenal job that I hired her, while still at Ethan Allen, to redecorate a sitting room and make touch ups to my drab dining room. Both beautiful rooms now as well! After leaving Ethan Allen, I then hired Michelle to completely renovate a master bathroom, which is the most beautiful bathroom EVER! (Even my contractor agrees!) She completely transformed the bath into an elegant oasis of marble. We live in a house that is almost 25 years old and she has effectively brought life into our house, with a lovely transitional style that is comfortable, livable and beautiful. I receive compliments from friends that my house belongs in a magazine --and yet is is so livable! And all since Michelle redecorated! She has exquisite design taste and style, all while working within a budget and within some parameters--like family pieces you just can't part with. I have no reservations in recommending Michelle. I guarantee you, if you work with her, will be thrilled with the results. Michelle Super is SUPER!

The bathroom they made--which included tearing down walls and re-purposing a closet--is the best in our house!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
