Awesome! Dunham's flooring helped me with some of the flooring installation that someone else had messed up and installed incorrectly. He was friendly, honest, worked hard, on time, professional. I wish I would have hired him in the first place!

After being devastated by an astronomical estimate from a big-box retailer, we found Leon and were very impressed. He brought samples to our home twice, came out for measurements a third time, and was always prompt to respond to emails or phone calls. He told us the job would take two days, and sure enough it did. He was even flexible and worked around our painters who did not finish on schedule. The carpet and laminate flooring look beautiful and have transformed our house. We are so impressed with Leon and his crew and will use them again for our next project!

They did a great job at a great price. They cleaned the tile and grout at one house and then did carpeting (purchased and installation) at another house for us. I highly recommend choosing them for any job!

David and his crew were great to work with. David always responded quickly. The work was as promised and looked amazing. I was grateful for all of David’s suggestions. David offered a discount to get his crew to work immediately. His crew cleaned some old drywall texturing problems, included a second color for doors, trim and baseboards and even built and hung new ceiling fans for me. Great crew, great work!

After our upstairs toilet leaked through the bathroom floor/garage roof, Charles was able to quickly repair the roof and replaced the baseboards in our bathroom all for a very reasonable price. His work speaks for itself, he took the time to ensure that our baseboards and the caulking on the tile floor matched as close as possible, his technician Jaime did a great job texturing the garage roof. Overall we are very happy with the work that was done, Charles was very knowledgable, professional and we highly recommended taking advantage of his services.

I'm so impressed with KR Flooring. Another company ripped up my carpet and left me living on subfloor for 2 weeks, and then gave me the runaround when I tried to call them. They even tried to tell me I may need to have carpet forever, my subfloor was "the worst they'd ever seen" (another contractor said it was no big deal at all) and they couldn't install my laminate. I came to Thumbtack to find a more professional flooring company, and I'm glad I did. Leila was literally instant messaging me Friday night at 10pm, mere hours after I put in the request, to get more information for a more accurate quote. Stefan emailed me the next day with the quote and was very responsive to my questions. We were able to schedule the installation on Memorial Day. The installers were friendly and professional, in-and-out in a single 9-5 day, and most importantly, it looks beautiful! My only regret is that I waited so long, and didn't hire KR in the first place. Thank you so much!

We can not be more happy with our flooring. Ilie and his team were so professional and personable. The job took slightly longer than expected because of unforseen issues but he made sure everything was just right for us in the end. I highly recommend him for any job, big or small if you are looking for top quality work at a fair price. Thank you!

The team at GPS did a fantastic job on my friend's property. My buddy, Bill, is an elderly gentlemen from Vietnam and did not speak English. I was the intermediary between Bill and Michael, and Michael did an excellent job explaining all the details and questions for my friend and I. When Bill went on a two month long trip, a water filtering unit under his sink went kaput and leaked water everywhere. By the time he got back the floors were not wet, but there was mold up to 4 feet on his walls! GPS had replace all the drywall, cabinets, countertops, and a few appliances. While the work took a week longer than expected (Bill had some unique cabinetry that Home Depot promised to have in stock but did not due to the northeastern storm at the time), the team kept in touch with me through phone and email and helped me understand how the home insurance aspect works. I quoted 6 different places and almost went with someone else just as reputable, but GPS's professionalism and customer service (not to mention low prices and a complete breakdown of estimated costs) won me over in the end. I will definitely recommend them to my friends should they need it.

We recently contracted with Deb for tile flooring in our Chandler home. I can only say positive things. The advice and service were outstanding. Deb guided us in the tile selection process, visited our home several times to manage the installation and followed up with a final evaluation and care instructions. We are beyond happy with our new tile floor and with the quality and professionalism of all aspects of the process from start to finish. We will definitely recommend Floor Coverings International and we will be using again.

I had 3 bedrooms and a walk-in closet with carpet I wanted replaced with some type of wood- look flooring. Ray came to my house, took measurements and explained all of my options with hardwood, laminate and vinyl including the plusses and minuses of each. He had many samples and laid them out next to my furniture so we could see how it matched. We discussed pricing and a schedule for installation. Ray was extremely professional and did not try to upsell. The day of the original scheduled installation, Thursday, I was called by the installers saying the material was late in arriving and said they could come the following day, Friday. I said OK. Friday morning , a man arrived to rip out the carpet and patch the tack strips holes. I asked when the installers would be there and he said a few hours because they were finishing up another job. Friday afternoon came...no installers. A phone call said they were still at they other job, but would be there Saturday morning. Saturday, the demo man and arrived alone to finish the carpet removal and tack strip holes and move furniture including my bed. He said the installers would be there at noon. A phone call at noon said they weren't coming. My bed was apart and I had nowhere to sleep. I called Ray and he seemed upset at the delay and said he would take care of it. The installers showed up at 5 PM. They finished my bedroom, reassembled my bed and moved the bedroom furniture back. They said the would be back Sunday to do the other two bedrooms and the walk-in closet. They came Sunday and finished the two bedrooms. However, they didn't have enough material to finish the closet nor did they have the transition pieces between rooms, They would have to locate two more boxes of material and come back. The following week was Thanksgiving but they did show up the Friday after Thanksgiving and finished the job. They finished 8 days after the original scheduled installation. My schedule was very flexible but my time is not. Nothing worse than waiting for someone to show up and when they don't show up, it wastes my time. The quality of the installation was excellent. Once they were done, everything looked great. They cleaned up everything and took all the removed materials away, put all the furniture back and left me with an extra box of material. They walked me through all the rooms and explained how to care for my new floors. All in all, I was very happy with Ray and the quality of the installation. The scheduling needs some work.

The team at Venus Homes did excellent work from start to finish. We interviewed multiple companies for our vinyl flooring job. Narsay did a quality job listening and understanding the needs of the job while being able to foresee potential challenges. Narsay set realistic expectations regarding the time needed to complete the job. Before, during and after Narsay and teams communication was spot on. The end product turned out great and we couldn’t be more happy with the way our floors turned out.

We recently had DK Flooring refinish the floors throughout our entire home, and we couldn’t be happier. Andrei was professional, responsive, and honest. We got multiple quotes and he was by far the best! Not only was he honest and timely, we were always able to get ahold of him when we needed him. Additionally, he worked around our demanding schedule to make sure the job was finished EARLY! His entire crew was professional and took the utmost care when it came to our belongings and our home. I can’t say enough great things about the quality of work and the pristine results he achieved. Andrei not only refinished worn, scarred floors to a better than new condition, but he also replaced and relaced large areas of our flooring. This was not a project just any flooring expert could handle. We couldn’t be happier!!!

We had 3,000+ square feet of cork flooring installed in our office building and Pristine Interiors did a great job. Todd and his crew are responsive, detail-oriented and will go the extra mile to finish the job on time and to their customer's specifications. We would use them again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
