Christian Huenke says, "I recently purchased a home and Sun Devil Electric just came out today. The response from their team was phenomenal and they scheduled me much sooner than I thought would have been possible. I called out a few minor issues I knew I had and was hoping to get repaired; while giving the electrical system a once over Erik found multiple issues in my panel that very likely would have resulted in a fire had it not been identified and fixed. He did everything I was hoping could get done and more, including swapping and installing a ceiling fan. I will definitely be using them again to run some outlets into the garage and as I start to work through some additional remodeling efforts."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

I hired an electrician from another company that worked for hours but could not identify the electrical problem in my home. If you’ve ever hired someone to do a job and in the end they tell you they can’t fix it but are billing you, it feels really bad. I called Arthur Electrical Services for help. Robert Arthur, the owner, made time for me on his busy schedule, arrived on time, and got to work. Rob found the source of the problem and had my electrical power restored within the hour. Amazing!!!! Rob was knowledgeable, courteous and efficient! When I need an electrician or whenever I make a referral for an electrician, It will be, Arthur Electrical Services!

Best electrician I’ve worked with in AZ. He did a replacement install for me and did so with the highest quality. Most importantly, everything remained clean and undamaged - and everything was functioning properly. I would highly recommend this company. I’ll definitely be using them again.

Worst electricians ever. Pre-wired lights that cannot be connected together to even turn on. Left holes in the wall and drywall pieces everywhere. Outlet that was re-wired doesn’t even work. Claim everything was tested before leaving but clearly not. Set of 4 kids that were arguing the entire time and no one seemed to know exactly what they were even supposed to be doing. Also very much a price gauger. I would recommend getting a few quotes before going with these guys. Let them know if the issue and they want $160 service fee to correct their own issue. Just hired a new electrician to come fix the botched job I was left with. Buyer be ware.

Excellent work. I needed an outdoor fan installed along with 2 kitchen pendant lights. I reached out to A1 on Friday and they were able to get me a Saturday appointment at a great rate! The work was very clean and the licensed electrician was very professional and friendly. I will definitely use A1 again if the need arises!

Alan fit me into his busy schedule when I had a serious emergency at my home. He solved my issue and suggested some great upgrades to my system. This company is awesome and it will be my go to electrician from now on. Alan is friendly, personable, knowledgeable, and fair. I would suggest all that read this review to look no further for electrical work.

Alan was great. Almost instant responses to any questions/ concerns we had for installing recessed LED lighting, along with a new light fixture, and dimmer switches. Alan and Brian were on time, professional, funny, incredibly well priced for a licensed, bonded, and insured electrician. They took all of our concerns and feedback into consideration to ensure everything was completed exactly the way we wanted. Look no further.

Armando was the first electrician to answer my request so I hired him. I can not believe how fortunate that decision was. Armando and his apprentice Chris were amazing! The quality of work was terrific. They went above and beyond doing everything I requested. On top of that both men were so respectful, kind, tidy, and personable. I will definitely use Copperhead Electric for future projects.

Terrible, just terrible. Do NOT hire. I don't think he's licensed or bonded. He will tell you he's going to show up on a certain date and time, then show up two days late. We actually had a switch, which he installed, shoot sparks when he was done. My wife got shocked by another switch he installed. Terrible electrician. Do NOT hire.

Mason was very knowledgeable and professional. He showed up on time and did a great job installing our three ceiling fans. It was rather a large job considering he needed to crawl into the attic in the heat of Arizona’s summer and did not charge us an arm and leg! A few other electricians and handymen on this app didn’t even respond or follow through with a scheduled appointment. I am very happy to have chosen Woody’s Electrical and would highly recommend them to anyone.

After having multiple electricians fail to respond to my request for service I decided to turn to Thumbtack and I'm very thankful I did. Farris Electric LLC was very quick to respond to any questions I had and scheduling the job was easy and efficient. They showed up on time the morning of the install and after verifying what needed to be done they got right to work. The completed project turned out better than I could have imagined. I will definitely be calling Farris Electric LLC first in the future for any of my electrical needs.

I had difficulty finding an electrician who could help me in a relatively short time frame, and Connor came through. 5 Stars for giving me light again in my back hall, fixing the outdoor GFCI, fixing the bathroom/spare room messed up switches, and the front door light and outlet switch. He did such a good job, I'm having him come back and add an outdoor outlet on my deck and lighting in my new "She-Shed". Highly recommend Bear Electric services.

Jason and his crew were just amazing!! They were on time - I had scheduled time with him well in advance and did an amazing job at an amazing price! They installed recessed cans, ceiling fans, surge breaker, replaced switches etc. Jason had brought plenty of plastic wrap to cover the entire floor when they drilled for the recessed cans. It gets really messy! They then also cleaned up very well afterwards! Very professional. Very knowledgeable and very creative in solution if for challenging problems that we faced during the project. I have already recommended Jason to few others and at least one of them has gotten their work done with Jason and extremely happy with his work as well. Going forward, he is my go to electrician!

Cameron did an awesome job. I plan on bringing him back to do some more work since everything went so well. Update : second job not so hot. 2-3 hour job was quoted which took 10 hours and I had to help some of the time. It left me with a garage door that wouldn’t open because it had no power and where half of the outlets in my garage were not functioning. 3 days have passed and no response when I tried to get him back out here. I had to pay someone else to fix it. A wire was cut that shouldn’t have been per the new electrician. I mentioned I have a 5 yr old and a dangling wire hanging from the ceiling to get the garage door to function in the mean time, still no response.

Jason has a great demeanor which makes him easy to trust. I felt he knew what he was doing however in retrospect he was constantly in a hurry and taking short cuts. We had multiple issues at the outset due to time constraints and issues on my end with getting the drywall finished. Unfortunately neither he nor his worker cleaned up after they left which was very upsetting -- the first time his helper asked to use my vacuum to clean up then left it on the the stairwell. After he changed the outlets in my son's room I had to have him come back because one of them was not working. It took more than a week to get him back to fix it. I have had multiple issues with the hall lights he installed -- not staying on the wall. There were visible defects on the lights themselves but he dismissed them. One week ago he said "I contacted my supplier and he sent me new lights." He showed up today with brown lights instead of BLACK and decided to use double sided sticky tape to make it stay on the wall instead of replacing lights. I had multiple electrical jobs in the house but I absolutely would not use Jason again. Quality is subpar -- I need to have another electrician come in and fix his "gerry-rigged light" and he is just not reliable. Jason said as he was leaving today "if you feel the need to bash me on social media .. go ahead." The fact is this platform is to let others know whether or not a trade on this site is reliable and provides good quality work -- I would say in closing the fact I would not hire Jason again should speak volumes.
