Vickie is fabulous in saving you money. She does know how to decorate on a dollar. She has professional expertise as a color consultant. She was able to change the entire look of my home simply by staging and repurposing. She was fabulous with the placement of my furnishings and accessories. Due to her degree being in decorating she can tie the whole decorating package together including lighting, window treatments and flooring. In closing I highly recommend her.

Cristi was great in helping me select colors for my new kitchen. She selected colors based my favorite color and that would work with my other furniture. She showed me how to use color for maximum impact.

I found Naomi Siegler on the Modern Phoenix web site. I liked the way she answered questions that popped up in the online forums and decided to meet with her. I had bought a 1959 condo that needed a complete rehab. I knew that I wanted something really modern, and I mostly needed a design professional to help me coordinate colors and give me other ideas for the job. Naomi had so many ideas that I would have never thought of. Plus, she kept me from making mistakes that might have been costly to re-do later on. She did a space plan of the living room to help me decide what size the furniture should be. She also helped me deal with the contractor that was actually doing the construction work (getting the work done was quite stressful). She did many more things that I can't remember right now, but all of it was thoughtful and valuable. I was reluctant to pay any interior designer at first, because I thought I should be able to do this on my own. But, the money I spent was definitely worth it. She spends a lot of time with you, both in person, and through e-mail. Naomi also gets trade discounts that she passed on to me (the biggest one was through Arizona Tile, which saved me enough to almost pay Naomi's fee).

We’ve had the pleasure of working with Jill over the last several months. In the course of this project, she has helped transform our house into a home. Through her expertise, design acumen and insight, she has helped make a space that once brought us feelings of great angst, into a retreat that we never want to leave (on a limited budget to boot!). While our working relationship with Jill has been unconventional at times, it has been an enjoyable experience. She goes above and beyond to give us very personalized service and she always looks out for our best interest. In the process of doing this, she has become more than our designer; she has become our friend. We’ve learned a lot from working with her, and through this experience, we’ve found a love and appreciation for design that we never knew we had! We give Jill Stein a strong recommendation and hope you find your experience with her as rewarding as we have.

I wanted a "Dutch" themed kitchen to celebrate my heritage; Cindy joyfully and cleverly took the idea and ran with it. Color is trickier than it seems and Cindy was spot on for choosing the perfect tones and hues. She ably incorporated my ideas into the plan, plus gave advice where I was stymied. She used craftsmen that showed up every day and came to work on time. Best of all, she decorated the finished project beautifully; magazine worthy and pleasing. Using a designer is worth every cent (you'll be glad you did) and I fully recommend Cindy!

"It is my first home, and I wanted it to be my dream place. I did some research and after talking to Ellinor, I felt like she exactly knew what I wanted. As I kept working with her, it seemed a gradual conversion of dream to reality. The color choices, furniture selection, and the final finishing touches were simply amazing. Sometimes the color scheme, she described, seemed a little strange, but my instinct of putting faith in her, generated an awesome result. One point which made me a fan of Ellinor is her ability to work within my budget and the final product didn't give me any feeling of compromise. Another trait which made me most relaxed was her timeliness in getting the job done and managing everything like painting, flooring, plumbing, electrical work. I never had to worry about anything and got regular updates from Ellinor. Her availability, flexibility, and responsiveness are way above expectations. Even after finishing her job, she is always ready to help if I face any problem."

I was at a loss about what to do with my house. I couldn't figure out what colors for the walls. I needed a light for the foyer. I didn't know how to arrange my artwork, pictures or furniture. Lisa came up with so many good suggestions and helped put it all together. I am very happy with the outcome. Lisa doesn't know it but she's going to be called back shortly to help with my bedroom too. I can strongly recommend her.

The exceptional service that my husband an I have received from Ana, with Desiging Elements is beyond compare. Ana is energetic, knowledgeable, pleasant, professional, and very helpful. Ana and her team at Designing Elements have a superior product knowledge that I hadn't seen before. Their attention to detail is an asset to any homeowner or company who is looking for a rewarding transformation to their existing property interior. I am absolutely delighted with the work Ana has done for us. My husband and I were not available for the duration of the transformation of our home. During that time Ana fully managed, directed, implemented all of the remodeling / design ideas, space management, furniture placement, accessorizing, that we had agreed on, for this entire project. Through emailed, Fedex, texts and phone calls, Ana made it possible for us to view, choose, and approve styles, themes, materials, textures, colors, etc., that was best suitable for our taste while maintaining the integrity of the architecture of our home, making this process a very pleasant one. My husband and I truly felt as one of those couples from HGTV when we first walked into our fabulously designed dream home. When asked how we like our newly re-designed home, these are the words that flow; "absolutely fabulous" "remarkable" "inviting" "calming" ...Ana is not only amazingly talented but also a kind and wonderful person who truly cares for the quality of service she offers her clients. We greatly recommend Ana, with Designing Elements for any interior design/decorating, home organizing needs you may have. Give her a call; she has a remarkable way of making things happen ...she surely did it for us!

The job was at my house I just moved into with my fiance. We needed to "mesh" our furniture together and accessories to make it our home. She was very professional, being on time and listened to what I had in mind. She also suggested some wall colors that we painted and looks great! I would recommend her for sure! Thank you Kailie and team! Donna North Scottsdale

Before Kim, I thought that interior designers were for mega-mansions or for those who were extra stylish. Not true! Kim designed our home with smart, cohesive, space-conscious choices that turned our humble home into a glowing, modern sanctuary. We love EVERYTHING she did. My husband and I agree that hiring Kim was one of the best decisions we've made. She saved us time, stress, and money - not to mention that she made our home more beautiful than our wildest dreams. We've already hired her for our next project - a backyard sanctuary. Thanks Kim!

This is my third time using the services of Krystilyn of Design Studios. She designed the kitchen and bathroom in my primary home. I was so pleased with her ideas and attention to details that I reached out to her to put in an additional kitchen in my rental home. I am now planning to build a home, so I didn't hesitate to contact Krystilyn to handle my space plan, as well as solicit her expert decorating ideas for everything from cabinetry, countertops, doors, flooring, lighting, furniture, paint colors and artwork. She takes extraordinary care to make your house a home.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
