Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

Better for high-traffic areas

Recommended for interior floors, walls

Slightly more water-resistant

Softer, easier to cut

Consult with a top tile contractor near you and get free estimates on how much installing tile will cost you.

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Kevin did an awesome job with our backsplash install and I would recommend him to anyone. We provided the subway tile, herringbone marble, and grout. He installed. I had kind of laid out our herringbone accent square and he installed it perfectly so that the edges made sense with the designs. He also spaced all surrounding tile so that it matches the pattern of tile perfectly. He installed the tile on day one and let us know that we could mark any tiles to be moved before he grouted the next day. I marked maybe 5 super super minor things which were probably just preference to me. When he finished the job anything I marked were fixed completely perfect. He makes perfect cuts and really pays attention to detail. High quality work for such a good price! He worked both days on the job while we were at work and we felt completely comfortable with him. We appreciate Kevin!

Alex and the guys with Valley Wide Tile and Stone did a great job ripping out our ceramic tile and carpet, and then installing travertine flooring throughout our entire house. Before the project was done, we included putting travertine on the walls of the walk-in master shower and the walls of the guest room bathtub/shower. The pictures speak for them selves!!

My wife and I were very happy with the backsplash installation that Kevin did for us, and also the master bath shower tile repair that he did. His work ethic is excellent and we appreciated the advice he gave us regarding other renovation projects we will be completing. Kevin was very helpful and respectful in answering our questions and concerns. We will definitely hire him for future tiling projects that we have planned. Thanks, Kevin.

We are very happy with our new kitchen backsplash. The quality of the installation is great, they showed up on time and were great about talking us through each step in the process. Very easy to work with, and we will definitely be hiring T&T Custom Tile again for our floors and bathrooms.

I'll say, while not a ton of tile, our backsplash was a ton of work due to the number of cuts (7 outlets, two small windows, around the breakfast bar, etc.) and therefore took a good amount of time, but the iTile installer definitely took his time and came back the next day to finish and grout. I did have to point out two cracked tiles around outlets before he started grouting, but to his credit, he pulled them out and put new ones in after I pointed it out. We do have one section of the backsplash that is not straight, it slopes downward (see pic, notice the bottom of the cabinets vs the tile line). It's something thats somewhat hidden by our kitchen appliances, but is something we definitely notice. All-in-all, the amount of time put in, the amount of cuts, and the very reasonable cost, plus the fact that he did fix the cracked tiles we pointed out right away made for a good experience.

Original review: (Approx. 08/2018 - Read the update!) I designed a shower - he and his team, brought it to life. We did run into a few issues, but Jose was always very communicative and addressed all of our concerns. The project was delayed by our plumber, and also some situations Jose ran into. Communication was absolutely key for us. ___ UPDATE: (02/06/2019) 7 months later, all the grout is breaking off in large chunks! The caulking is also coming completely undone and pulling off just with basic shower usage! We can no longer use the shower. In text messages with Jose (today) on potential 2 new projects, I shared my concerns about this project. We were THEN told that the tile we selected for the shower floor was the wrong size and that's why there are issues. This is the FIRST time we have heard of the size recommendation on floor tiling and it has been installed for 7 months! This was a complete scratch design that I connected with and had been approved by the installer initially. We didn't even buy tile or supplies until we had connected with an installer! If we had known there was an issue or a recommended or required tile size on the floor - that would have been an EASY fix, BEFORE the project started. Now we are having to spend additional time, lots more money and having to make extreme repairs on a newly installed shower that we anticipating lasting 10+ years. It makes us worried about the integrity of the rest of the project. It's with great regret that we even needed to come back to Thumbtack to update our review, which was originally very positive.

We hired Kevin to apply backsplash in our kitchen after the remodel. He was quick to respond, reasonable on price, showed up on time, and explained what he would need. You have to measure the space yourself so you can buy the right amount of tile. He gave me a list of materials to buy and have ready for when he was coming. However, he does make you seal the tile yourself- which was not told to me until after he installed and said “you have to go buy sealer and seal tonight before I come back tomorrow to grout.” It would have been nice if I knew that up front. It takes several hours because you have to apply and wait to dry before applying another coat, but it’s not hard to do. He did an average job. One of the grout lines where he stopped was a little sloppy and uneven. He also left a tile that was bulging out by an outlet, so now our outlet cover is cracked and a new one will not stay flat down. After the grout and caulk sealed, there were some air bubbles so we had to go back over some spots. He had great reviews and the picture reviews looked great, maybe I’m just too attentive to detail.

We were so impressed with the work that New West Solutions did in our home! We had new wood look tile installed, and it looks amazing. Once the job started we also asked them to replace our baseboards, toilets, and a bathroom vanity. Everything turned out perfect, and they still finished on time. I love that they took good care of our house throughout the process..we even saw them vaccuuming our garage, where the materials were kept during the project, on the last day! I cannot think of a single thing that they could have done better, which says a lot considering how picky I am. I highly recommend them!!
