Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who do you hire to paint cabinets?

A professional cabinet painter knows exactly what to do to give your cabinets long-lasting color and appeal. Other painters may also specialize in cabinet painting. You can find a highly rated, professional cabinet painter near you by searching online. Look at their online reviews and ratings from customers, as well as photos of recently painted cabinets that showcase the pro’s work.

What does it cost to have kitchen cabinets painted?

The average cost to have your kitchen cabinets painted by a professional ranges from $1,200 to $7,000. However, the layout of your cabinets can affect the complexity of the job and increase the cost. Your costs might also vary depending on how many kitchen cabinets need to be painted. And, some cabinet painters may charge extra if they have to remove the doors to paint them.

Contact a few cabinet painters in your area to get a better idea of how much it will cost to paint your kitchen cabinets. Also, read the cost guide for kitchen cabinet painting to learn more about how prices are determined.

Is it cheaper to paint or replace kitchen cabinets?

This depends on your project. Although painting kitchen cabinets is usually significantly cheaper than replacing them, it’s important to look at long-term costs vs. benefits. If your cabinets are damaged from water leaks, mold or warping and can no longer open or close properly, painting them is probably not the best option. You may spend less, but if you have to replace them in the next few years, you will wind up paying far more for having painted them.

What's the most durable paint for kitchen cabinets?

The most durable type of paint for kitchen cabinets is anything that’s smooth and easy to clean. It’s often recommended that you choose semi-gloss, gloss or satin finishes as opposed to matte finishes. Matte finishes have a non-uniform surface, which not only attracts dust and grease, but also makes it more vulnerable to damage during wipe downs.

Don’t hesitate to ask a top-rated cabinet painter for their advice as you’re planning your project.

I have to admit I had hired a previous painter to do my whole house and that was not a good experience. They got paint on everything, my new floors, my fixtures, appliances, toilets etc , and my walls have lots of spots missing paint, and my trim is awful , we could have done a 100’s times better doing it ourselves, but we wanted it done before we moved across the country. It wasn’t ready by move in date so that created a messy situation. We were going to have that painter do my kitchen cabinets and thank god we didn’t. With Joe we had a great experience. Joe and his crew were so professional. They totally taped off my kitchen to create a plastic barrier to protect the rest of my house, and no paint went where is wasn’t supposed to go. They were quick too, only 1.5 days to transform my old brown cabinets to a modern white and gray. And the price was definitely affordable and well worth it. We will definitely be using them again in the future. They restored my faith in professional painters.

Chris and his team were awesome. To begin, Chris was very professional and responsive via text or phone. He was on time and drove out to our home to offer an in person quote after he gave a quote via photos. The price was very reasonable but I was concerned about quality and how the sheen/smoothness would be afterwards. He explained different paint types and finishes and offered a few paint color suggestions. The actual painting process was smooth and easy thanks to Juan and the other painters. They covered the entire area and completed the job in 3 days. The outcome was perfect. Because of their attentiveness and integrity they promised to return if anything needed touched up. After we completed the remodel of our kitchen (new counters and backsplash) Juan came back out and repainted all the areas that needed a touch up. Overall, the experience was great and I HIGHLY recommend them if you want the most bang for your buck. Other quotes I got were more expensive and not as customer service oriented as Affordable Cabinets. Before and after photos included.
