Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 per hour, on average. Hourly rates can range anywhere from $40-$80. However, some vocal instructors may charge flat rates or offer packages. They may also offer 30-minute lessons for a lower price. Or, they might require monthly tuition for ongoing classes. It depends on the voice coach.

Contact vocal instructors near you to get a sense of how much singing lessons cost in your area.

How can I find a good voice teacher?

Use Thumbtack to find a good, top-rated voice teacher near you. With Thumbtack, you can view the teachers’ profiles, read their client testimonials and check their ratings. To ensure you hire the best instructor, ask them questions about their credentials and success with other students. You should also get cost estimates from at least three instructors before you make your decision.

What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

I absolutely love our piano teacher we found through traveling music lessons! I was going to start with every other week but then decided every week when I saw the quality of the lessons my 8 year old is getting! They work on music theory, playing songs, reading music, and technique! My daughter can already play a few songs and read music to play more.

I'm 29 years old and started piano lessons with George after having not played since middle school. George is great at customizing the lessons according to my ability and rate of learning. He teaches a lot of theory behind the music as well, which in my opinion, helps in understanding how to read the music. He also has a vast collection of music books and helps you choose books and songs that he thinks suits your learning style best.

We have only had three lessons so far but Terry has been great with my daughter. She is learning some guitar chords and how to read music. The scheduling is a breeze too. Blooming Cactus Music is very responsive.

Nick is a great instructor! My son never played guitar prior to his lessons with Nick. His teaching method allowed my son to learn guitar quickly and effectively. Nick is very friendly and my son enjoys his lessons. Also, his knowledge about music and instruments is incredible. Thanks Nick!

I started taking lessons from George after taking a twenty-year break from the piano. I have been so pleased with my experience! George loves music, and he loves to play and teach. I'm not only learning to play, I am also learning music theory. I highly recommend George to prospective piano students of all levels

I love that George could take me, someone who knew how to play a little, and opened up a whole new world of jazz piano in a way that made it easy and fun. He brings a wealth of knowledge and years of playing that helped show me lots of great tips and tricks of the trade. The joy he brings to the lesson, and to music, blends with mine, and so a sort of synergy is created in just a short time. I come from central Phoenix, and have bee happy to meet him for lessons I jazz that have made all the difference.

George is great. I've only had a few lessons so far but I've already learned a lot and feel that I'm getting better at piano. He's very easy to work with. He's patient and never judgemental. He's also understanding when you have to reschedule, which I appreciate since I work a lot and my schedule can be a little hectic. He doesn't make you play things you don't want to play and he will work with you on songs you do want to learn. He talks about music theory and history as it pertains to the song you're working on, which is always nice to know. He clearly is very knowledgeable and is eager to share his knowledge with his students. I'd highly recommend taking lessons with him.

Laura was extremely professional, friendly, and responded to my inquiry promptly. She immediately welcomed me into the studio with an easy demeanor that helped me feel comfortable. During my first lesson, she assessed my knowledge, technical skills, and ability to read and understand the music and notations. She was very patient as she observed me struggle to figure things out and play quite badly. She gave me homework that has been challenging and will definitely help me improve my understanding and skills as I play. Laura is also available for questions throughout the week and has consistently responded to my messages within minutes.

George is an outstanding piano and music teacher. From the first class he took the time to understand my goals as an adult student. (I used to take lessons as a kid, but stopped due to other activities.) George took the time to really listen to what I want to accomplish. Each class keeps getting better as I learn and move forward. There is absolutely NO pressure to go at a particular pace, George follows the pace I set and helps direct me to the next level, when I'm ready. I highly recommend his classes! Piano is fun and it's something I have always wanted to get back into. Thanks to George, I am on my way!

"I don't refund. Let's not move forward. I wish you all the best." I had a voice lesson scheduled for today at 11:00 AM. Michelle had offered $100 for the first six hours of lessons, which I throught was a great deal! Come this morning, I realized that I did not know what the refund policy might be if I don't continue with all 6 hours. I asked Michelle this morning, who quite coldly stated "I don't refund. Let's not move forward. I wish you all the best." Now, I understand that tone doesn't come across very well over text, so I followed up to say, "Um? I was just inquiring about the policy." She doesn't respond. I sent a pretty honest and disappointed text back to her, because - and I don't mean to be dramatic - but I'm going through a tough time in life right now. Taking singing lessons was suggested by my counselor, who knows I love singing and felt like it would be a really positive activity to help me cope with some simple depression and channel my energy toward something constructive. I don't write bad reviews, ever. But this random, cold and careless response from Beckle Music Studio killed my genuine excitement today. I have attached every communication we've had, to underline that I was not difficult in any way. I was flexible with the dates and times she suggested, and agreed to the $100 for the first 6 hours without ANY hesitation. I asked only if the entire payment was due at the time of the first lesson and if there was a refund policy. Maybe Michelle has had bad experiences with people complaining and not paying in the past - but I am the type of person who pays on time and doesn't write bad reviews. I had to make an exception on this one.
