What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

What a Pleasure it is to learn from Diane. I have an anxiety disorder and right off the bat I felt comfortable chatting with Diane on the Phone. This led to my first voice lesson. Diane is extremely knowledgeable and brings this knowledge together with her charming interpersonal skills This creates a relaxed and focused session. Such a Gift! Thank You so much!

Today was my first voice lesson with Kenny Miller and I'm really excited about all the things I'm going to learn and all the bad habits he's going to help me fix! He is very supportive and has top-notch skills that I know are going to improve my technique and increase my range. We're lucky to have someone of such high caliber willing to share his knowledge with us here in Phoenix!

"I don't refund. Let's not move forward. I wish you all the best." I had a voice lesson scheduled for today at 11:00 AM. Michelle had offered $100 for the first six hours of lessons, which I throught was a great deal! Come this morning, I realized that I did not know what the refund policy might be if I don't continue with all 6 hours. I asked Michelle this morning, who quite coldly stated "I don't refund. Let's not move forward. I wish you all the best." Now, I understand that tone doesn't come across very well over text, so I followed up to say, "Um? I was just inquiring about the policy." She doesn't respond. I sent a pretty honest and disappointed text back to her, because - and I don't mean to be dramatic - but I'm going through a tough time in life right now. Taking singing lessons was suggested by my counselor, who knows I love singing and felt like it would be a really positive activity to help me cope with some simple depression and channel my energy toward something constructive. I don't write bad reviews, ever. But this random, cold and careless response from Beckle Music Studio killed my genuine excitement today. I have attached every communication we've had, to underline that I was not difficult in any way. I was flexible with the dates and times she suggested, and agreed to the $100 for the first 6 hours without ANY hesitation. I asked only if the entire payment was due at the time of the first lesson and if there was a refund policy. Maybe Michelle has had bad experiences with people complaining and not paying in the past - but I am the type of person who pays on time and doesn't write bad reviews. I had to make an exception on this one.
