David did a great job for me. He hung a large picture for me...and took the time to make sure it was centered the way I wanted it. He also replaced the vertical blinds on my sliding glass door and fixed my running toilet. David was very friendly and efficient. He is also reasonably priced. I was delighted to get my work done within 24 hours of my request too. Thank you David!!!

Matt contacted me by text after I "hired" him and let me know what time he expected to arrive at my house to repair my front door. He texted me that his current job was taking more time than expected and asked if an hour later than originally noted would work for me. The Thumbtack software worked well to keep us connected. Matt was very pleasant and explained things well. I decided to have him replace my door handle and deadbolt as well as door bottom sweep and insulation around the door. Matt did a great job!!

Jason was in the middle of a job when he took my call. When he heard my front door didn't have a working lock, he made me his next call. He arrived sooner than expected, was polite and professional. He asked if we needed help with anything else while he was here. I highly recommend him and will use him again

John and his employee installed a French door and a security door for me today. The job ended up being a little more difficult than they had anticipated. They were both very professional and friendly. John's price was fair and the work he did was very high quality. I will definitely hire again in the future, and recommend to my friends and family.

Luis showed up and promptly went to work. He installed a garbage disposal, fixed a toilet, drilled out and installed a new deadbolt lock, fixed a screen, checked the a/c and thermostat, and did everything in a timely and professional manner. I couldn't be more pleased. We will definitely use him again for any more repairs in the future.

At $8 per lock and $45 service fee, Cactus Lock & Key came in about $30 cheaper than most others. Wyatt was really nice about squeezing me in for a same day appointment. He even showed up early! I didn't realize he had told me I had to pay cash and he was super nice about letting me call in and give my credit card number instead. The keys work great, I would definitely recommend!

Bill came to us after we bought a new home, and re keyed all the locks on the doors. He had to make several major adjustments due to the previous locks being poorly done or non code . He had everything completed before the moving van arrived the next day. He was pleasant and professional . I would recommend him highly !

I didn’t think there was much hope for my leaky, moldy outdated ceramic tile shower with some god-awful floor base that stained so bad. I have a decent house but this shower area was a nightmare. Well I really lucked out getting Ivan via Thumbtack. I heartily recommend him for any drywall, tile and grout creation you might want. He’s an absolute craftsman. He doesn’t just repair, he creates a new design look. Every time I look at my new shower area I am amazed and pleased to find everything is square and plumb, the tiles are cut and installed perfectly and the tile and grout color enhances the new chrome and glass door he picked out. As a matter of fact he picked out everything on account of I have no design sense and, I’m told, I may as well be color blind as to try to pick out something tasteful. No matter to Ivan. Since he knows what he is doing he picked out everything perfectly. He also took time to prepare all the surfaces and treat the area against mold before installing new waterproof drywall and a modern floor and drain area. The he artistically created a tile enclosure like no other I’ve see. It’s not that he increased the value of my home much more than I paid him; it’s not that he worked fast but careful and it's not the very fair price he gave me. It’s because I feel happily amazed when I enter the room and see his craftsmanship. That peace of mind hardly compares with the little he charged me compared to the result I got back. Bonus: He has a pleasing professional personality that is extremely rare in contractors these days. You can trust him to listen to you and still create a masterpiece.

John is expert electrician. He is also great in drywall and stucco work. We had innovative idea about kitchen exhaust and John did wonderful job executing the plan. We closed doggy door due to security reasons and due to John's expertise it is impossible to know if doggy door existed. He is good in paint job as well.

Hiring a contractor can be such a hassle. I am so impressed by the communication, follow through, and work done by ProStar Doors. I contacted 8-9 different door businesses, and this is the only place that responded quickly, these guys came to the rescue quickly. What an excellent service. I would only recommend ProStar in the Mesa/PHX/Scottsdale area.

I had three door repair issues that needed attention; two were relatively minor, but the third was significant. Anthony first came out to inspect the job and give me a firm quote. He was punctual, professional, and friendly. After being notified that his quote was accepted he made an appointment to perform the work. Anthony and his co-worked arrived and began the work on schedule. When the work was completed he took the time to explain to me what and how the repairs were made, and demonstrated how the repairs eliminated the issues with each door. Anthony offered a discount for a portion of the work that turned out to be unnecessary, and I paid him the agreed upon price less the discount. I was totally satisfied with his work and would recommend him without reservation.

These guys did a rekey for me at a new rental I have. I wasn't able to be there when they were, but they re-keyed the locks and also put a new lock on my mailbox as well, I paid over the phone. Simple and a fair price. Would use these guys again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.
