Whole house (about 1600 sf) wood-like / long tile installation, decorative stone accent around fireplace, and slate baseboard in main area. Included carpet and tile removal, floor prep and repair as well as removal and reseating toilet fixtures. Careful, neat work, quality installation. Other trades-people who know tile installation have made very favorable comments on the job. It took a while to complete, and J&M kept us informed of any unforeseen circumstances. Very good value for cost. Would hire again and recommend to others.

If you need just about anything done in your home......call Nick! He is a perfectionist in the work he does! He's reliable! When he says he'll be there at s certain time, he is...which is important to me. So far he's done tiling in my new bathroom and we've already hired him to tear out tile on our patio and put down new, to fix a surround on a garage door. He's even found a friend to help in painting our home. When my husband couldn't lift all the tiles we needed for our bathroom to bring home, Nick met us at Home Depot and did that for us. If you're looking for someone reliable, who takes pride in their work....this is your go to guy!

These guys are great! the minor electrical problem was solved immediately, Then I discovered that they could do many other things equally well, i.e. installing some blinds as well as telling me that they could do the installation of a new toilet that I need. one visit saved me many phone calls and separate arrangements AND they got along beautifully with my Jack Russell Terrier!

Michael, was very helpful with three homes he has worked on for me. He remodeled bathroom with tile shower & floor. New vanity with vessel sink. I took his suggestion to insulate brick home (only 1 room was missing insulation); now my room is comfortable with temperature. He smoothed out my sheet rock walls and painted the whole house. He was able to get a carpeting company to come and install carpet in one day notice. My front porch; completed wood treatment and staining; for outdoor durability. My other home in Gilbert; he improved the value of the home; was able to sell the home for more than we had expected. (The first weekend, home was on market; we had five offers) He placed new kitchen counter, sink, faucet and painted all the cabinets with a two tone color. He updated the three baths with tile floors and new hardware throughout. He replaced three big windows in the home. Stair case painting was nice. The stucco painting was very nice. My mother's home; he replaced the back yard wood fence with wood treatment color. Refinished the whole roof, after a leak into one of the bedroom ceiling. That bedroom with water damage; he placed floor tile; painted walls and new fascia. The driveway is awesome with brick paver's throughout. Thank you for all the work you have done for us.

I hired Steve to essentially completely refurbish a sorely outdated interior on a town home that we recently purchased when we moved to Tucson downsizing from a substantially larger, and frankly, much more finished home. I was very apprehensive about all of the work that needed to be done since the original (and I do mean original) appearance of the place left much to be desired, and I wanted a major upgrade in terms of materials and finishes. From the first day I met Steve, he was prompt, responsive, and gave me honest advice about what should (and should not) be done. One of the most important things about Steve is that he LISTENS and works very hard to make sure you end up with exactly what you want. He painted the entire interior, completely refurbished my kitchen, including counters, floors, installed a sink, and did a gorgeous decorative ceramic tile back splash. He put beautiful crown moulding in every room, and completely remodeled two bathrooms, including the master in which he performed the most beautiful installation of slate tile that I have ever seen. He had excellent ideas about fixtures and lighting and installed those as well. Another important thing about working with Steve is his reliability and conscientiousness. He has never once failed to show up for work that he promised and after working with him for the few months that it took to get the substantial work done, I developed so much trust in him that he has a key to my home. All of his work exceeded my expectations and he always left the work area cleaner than he found it. We are thrilled with the service, skill, reliability, and cost of the work that Steve did for us. He made a stressful situation that involved a major downsizing and a transition into a new phase of life so much easier. I cannot recommend Steve enough. I will NEVER use anyone else the next time I need anything done around the house. I recommend him without reservation. Alicia and Bob P.

I was referred to James Valdez, Southwest Patio Concepts, by my brother. I wanted to replace the various flooring in my over 40 year old house with tile. Along with baseboards and 3 doors damaged by termites. I was told that James does so much more than outdoor patios. I met with James and his associate Lee. After discussing the scope of the project, I decided to trust my project to him. He took care to protect furniture in the house when they demoed carpet and at least 3 layers of various flooring. He worked 6 days a week for 3 weeks and each day the site was left orderly. I appreciated his attention to detail; such as, color matching existing paint on the walls when touch ups were needed from the removal of old baseboards and trim. I'm so pleased with the finished look of the project. I learned by talking to him he has a variety of skills. If there is something he can't do, he can recommend a professional who can. I now have someone I can trust with my home improvement projects. James Valdez is reliable, detailed oriented and very professional. I would highly recommend him and Southwest Patio Concepts for any of your installation needs.

Joe remolded our master shower after we had an unexpected leak. He was extremely professional, on time, polite and hard working. His attention to detail soared high above the rest of the competition that we received bids from. Everything from his first initial meeting with us and estimate to his overall work was very precise. We highly recommend him. The stone tile work in our shower looks amazing. He helped us think of things we would never have considered on our own helping us achieve an end result that far exceeded our expectations. If you are looking for someone reliable and with attention to detail call Joe!

They installed a library in an extra bedroom and did a fabulous job. It included a hideaway bed, solid wood shelfs on all four walls, a sliding door to give more room! they matched the wood fan to the wood stain, and its beautiful. The attention to function and detail was wonderful! They have become my renovation people for over ten years now, installing tile, doors, closet shelves, emergency plumbing (I was so lucky they were available) and regular too, recently fixing an old shower and tub faucet. I just wish I had more money to spend with them!

Jake LaFave installed tile in 2 bathrooms. The final result was very good. Jake is an honest, hard working guy. He did not get the job done in the time, estimated, due to tile saw problems and a vehicle breakdown. To his credit, he always called to let me know if he was delayed. I would recommend Jake to others. His prices were very competitive.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
