Jerry Reyes does fantastic work. He has completed three projects for us and we have plans for two more. His work is complete, finished, and done extremely well. He has mastered many trades and does each one with tremendous skill. I highly value his work and will continue to utilize his services in the future. If you value a job well done, then do not hesitate to call on Jerry Reyes of Pro Handyman. Call Jerry for plumbing, electrical and carpentry and any other household repairs. MARK IS MORE THAN A MERE HANDYMAN! He is an extraordinary craftsman! I hired Mark to reinstall a costly 30 x 40 recessed medicine cabinet, which had been haphazardly installed by a general contractor. He cut the drywall to raise the cabinet, because it had been installed to low, leaving little room for a faucet; built a wood frame for the cabinet, where one had not been built by the contractor; moved the plumbing lines; built a base for a new wall-mount faucet, before we had a counter-mount faucet; installed the medicine cabinet; made sure all was level; and closed the drywall whole. Mark then installed the rough plumbing for our shower, bathtub, and sink. Mark did a fantastic job! He is a gem! He has a GREAT personality, fantastic work ethic, very methodical, has an eye for detail, not afraid of a challenge, and is truly a master craftsman.

J&T plumbing pros is Amazing! I’m not one to write reviews but because of the service and work that was provided I felt the need to let everyone know what a great job they did! As soon as I called they were very accommodating to my time and scheduled to come out quick even though it wasn’t an emergency. My garbage disposal was not working. When the plumber came he took the time to explain what my options were and felt like he didn’t want to just up sell me. The plumber was prompt, clean, knowledgeable and quality of work was very professional. Thank you for your work!

GM plumbing came out the first time on short notice to pump out my septic tank. I called that morning and he was out around mid day. He came out again the next day to put in a clean out access because my main drain was clogged. He is knowledgeable and professional. His prices were reasonable. The only thing is he/his crew arrived late both days. I would call GM Plumbing again.

They came installed a new central air-conditioning system in our home recently. The installers were professional, super neat, & the system works great! Sam came out today to do a complimentary check on the new system. He was here around two hours!!! Again, professional, neat, thorough, and answered all of our questions. Couldn't ask for more. Highly recommend Them and the people that work for them (and that includes the people in the office). First class company!!

This would not allow me to select Acme Plumbing, Tim McIntyre whom I hired. Excellent job, can quote over phone not wasting your time trying to get someone out to look first and then try and up sell you. Tim gave a quote over the phone, which he was willing to honor. We had him do more work and are extremely happy with Acme

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
