Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost to hire an interior painter ranges between $200-$2,700. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls.

Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to get the outside of your house painted?

You can expect to pay around $2,535 to get the outside of your house painted, though this cost will increase with larger house sizes (and decrease with smaller ones). The average hourly rate for exterior painters is $45 and ranges from $25-$75.

Wood, brick, stucco, vinyl, aluminum and stone each have their own set of demands. Contact exterior painters near you to get a detailed cost estimate for your house.

How much should interior painting cost per square foot?

You can expect a 12x12-foot average room with 8-foot ceilings to cost $100 to paint, while a 16x16-foot room with 9-foot ceilings could cost around $175.

To calculate the cost of interior painting per square foot, measure the square footage of wall space and ceiling space of your room. From this, you can estimate the number of gallons of paint needed to cover the wall space and compare it to these figures. You can also ask interior painters near you to provide an estimate before you hire them.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $917 (for one room) to $4,893 (for eight rooms). The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted.

Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards.

In one area, pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do interior painters charge per hour?

You can expect to pay $50 per hour for interior painting. This price will change depending on a number of factors and may range between $30 and $160 per hour. Some factors include the height of the rooms, the complexity of the painting and more.

For an accurate cost estimate, request quotes from local painters and contractors.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Juan was great to work with. Super pleasant, punctual, and professional. The paint job was perfect and surprisingly quick. We had three bedrooms painted, walls and ceilings. He showed up on time and got straight to work. We would highly recommend to any friends looking for a painter and we'll definitely use him for any additional paint jobs in the future.

Our hallway panels were originally painted with oil and then painted over with latex by the prior owners, without primer. Over the years it peeled and it looked so sad! Thank you Ever and team for making our hallway fresh and beautiful again!!!

Carlos was very professional. He committed to a timeframe and met it. The first pass at the painting was not sufficient to me, so I asked him to put another coat of paint on. He did so because he wanted to make sure I was 100% happy. I like someone who values his work and values his commitment to customer service.

We worked with the other guys painting company in March for the exterior painting of our house. Israel and his crew did were wonderful to work with. Israel was responsive and prompt in his communication with us and answered all of our questions. He arrived to work on time and were professional and efficient in their work. Throughout the day he even texted us updates and sent us pictures regarding the progress of the paint job of our house. My husband and I were very pleased with their work. We will definitely use them again in the future and have already recommended them to our family and friends.

Gustavo and his team essentially repainted the entire interior of my new home which had been painted in pastel Easter colors in Hugh gloss by the previous owner. This included all doors, trim, baseboards, walls and ceilings and I cannot say enough good things about the quality of work, the professionalism and timeliness of Dominguez painting. I would 1000% recommend Gustavo and will definitely be reaching out to him for future work, he even repainted gutters and home exteriors!

My team damaged a wall at a photoshoot and the homeowners were very unhappy. Junior responded to my inquiry immediately and came two days later. They matched the paint and patched up the damage and the homeowner was super pleased.

Rodrigo communicated promptly and professionally. He showed up early with all the materials needed to complete the job and worked quickly. After he finished the job, he patiently went over the fence with me while I pointed out several touch up areas. The reason for the 3-star review is for a lack of attention to detail. He did not tape off some areas resulting in spray to the paint on my house, pavers and he also painted part of my neighbors fence. I asked him if he had painted the top of my fence, which he assured me he had, but after he had left, I checked from the upstairs and he had not painted the top. I also noticed some splotches in areas which were masked by shade when he finished the job and we reviewed the work together. He told me if I had any additional touch ups after the paint had fully cured to call him and he would return to complete any additional touch ups because he wanted me to be fully satisfied. A week or later, I reached out to him to see if he would come out and perform the touch ups, he initially responded that he would come out but when I reached out to him to secure a time/date and also mentioned there were some small handyman jobs I’d be interested in him quoted for me, he never responded.

For starters, Gene from (Straightline Painting) complained from day one. First of all, he didn’t like the Behr paint that I had wanted to use. Then, Gene forgot to bring his own spackling to the job on that first day. I then went to purchase some spackle at the local hardware store. After returning with the spackle, he told me the spackle was terrible. For someone that needed the perfect spackle, he also left cracks in the ceiling that he had supposedly repaired and then proceeded to paint over it. After finishing that day, we had to clean-up after him. There were paint droppings on our hardwood floors, as well as paint chips. In the downstairs room of our home, Gene left the closet unfinished and partially unpainted, as well as the trim in the upstairs side bedroom. Also, in the room off of the kitchen, there are the obviously not spackled gaping imperfections in the wood that were just simply painted over. On Monday, June 4, 2018, he called to tell me that very morning that he was off to another job. I had been expecting been him to show up on time that morning, as a professional. He never informed me until that very morning that he would not be at our property to do the job he was hired to do, as he had other obligations! One thing is true, and that is, a supposedly professional should never bring a dog, and or any dogs to their job site unless authorized. That person should at least be responsible enough to clean-up after their dog. I just paid half the amount he wanted $450.00 for a crap job. He should be embarrassed!! He should also return the money for that horrible experience. I really resent the fact that he and his company are considered and lauded by some of the dubious and supposedly professional websites. Gene is not a professional painter. (In my opinion) I will only use professional considerations, and, only through reliable or personal sources.

Can't say enough good about Ever. They came to the house and painted the table. Unfortunately, it wasn't completed to my desired level of quality. I mentioned this to him and he came back out a few days later to re-do the job. A total professional.....great working with him.

They have been wonderful from start to finish repainting the entirety of the inside of our home. Not an easy job as it was last painted over 10 years ago and we have many different colors and accent walls. Exceptional attention to detail and very responsive to any touch ups needed. Highly recommend

After popcorn ceiling material was removed, Jose bid on the job to paint the uneven surface that remained. His was the only bid to specifically address the job we posted. When contacted, he responded immediately and was friendly, professional and upbeat. He did an excellent job at a reasonable price. We definitely recommend him.

Peter’s team repainted the whole inside of our restaurant with lime wash paint. They took an old space and made in shine like new! The had to do major wall repair throughout the space and the before and after is amazing. They worked tirelessly to make sure the job was done correctly. We wouldn’t hesitate to hire him and his team again in the future!

Juan and his team were incredible. Juan came over quickly to survey my place and gave me a reasonable quote. He was able to pull together a team in short time to paint my 2 bedroom place in 2 days. On top of that, Juan's team went the extra mile and swept up the place! The quality of his work was amazing, and you should absolutely hire Juan. He was amazing; a great communicator; and incredibly professional.

We just purchased our first home and it needed a little TLC before we moved in. We got quotes from 3 different contractors and the Jericho team had the most reasonable quote as well as the manpower to get things done quickly! They showed up every day on time and got to work! We hired them for exterior and interior painting as well as some minor contracting work (new pantry, light installations, minor roof and window work). Along the way they had great suggestions based on their experience. We were super pleased with the results and we have a couple more home reno projects that we will work with them on in 2021!
