Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

Would NEVER hire this guy. For some reason, didn't put a second coat of paint on my hall ceiling. Made every excuse in the book to not come fix it. Said he would send money so I could pay someone else. Did not. Thumbtack ended up having to give me the money he was supposed to. And upon examining the work, it was sloppy - drips, missed places, paint on the floor. While they were painting, caught multiple places where there were drips. Didn't paint the inside of my closet door. Details count. Hire someone else!

Carlos was very professional. He committed to a timeframe and met it. The first pass at the painting was not sufficient to me, so I asked him to put another coat of paint on. He did so because he wanted to make sure I was 100% happy. I like someone who values his work and values his commitment to customer service.

We worked with the other guys painting company in March for the exterior painting of our house. Israel and his crew did were wonderful to work with. Israel was responsive and prompt in his communication with us and answered all of our questions. He arrived to work on time and were professional and efficient in their work. Throughout the day he even texted us updates and sent us pictures regarding the progress of the paint job of our house. My husband and I were very pleased with their work. We will definitely use them again in the future and have already recommended them to our family and friends.

Milad and Hassan (I hope I spelled his name right!) were such a a pleasure to work with. They were very professional, accommodating and took great care and pride in their work. They also helped move everything away from the walls so they could paint which we so appreciated. We are so happy with their work in our new home and will certainly call on them again for future painting projects! Thanks guys!

For starters, Gene from (Straightline Painting) complained from day one. First of all, he didn’t like the Behr paint that I had wanted to use. Then, Gene forgot to bring his own spackling to the job on that first day. I then went to purchase some spackle at the local hardware store. After returning with the spackle, he told me the spackle was terrible. For someone that needed the perfect spackle, he also left cracks in the ceiling that he had supposedly repaired and then proceeded to paint over it. After finishing that day, we had to clean-up after him. There were paint droppings on our hardwood floors, as well as paint chips. In the downstairs room of our home, Gene left the closet unfinished and partially unpainted, as well as the trim in the upstairs side bedroom. Also, in the room off of the kitchen, there are the obviously not spackled gaping imperfections in the wood that were just simply painted over. On Monday, June 4, 2018, he called to tell me that very morning that he was off to another job. I had been expecting been him to show up on time that morning, as a professional. He never informed me until that very morning that he would not be at our property to do the job he was hired to do, as he had other obligations! One thing is true, and that is, a supposedly professional should never bring a dog, and or any dogs to their job site unless authorized. That person should at least be responsible enough to clean-up after their dog. I just paid half the amount he wanted $450.00 for a crap job. He should be embarrassed!! He should also return the money for that horrible experience. I really resent the fact that he and his company are considered and lauded by some of the dubious and supposedly professional websites. Gene is not a professional painter. (In my opinion) I will only use professional considerations, and, only through reliable or personal sources.

Can't say enough good about Ever. They came to the house and painted the table. Unfortunately, it wasn't completed to my desired level of quality. I mentioned this to him and he came back out a few days later to re-do the job. A total professional.....great working with him.

After popcorn ceiling material was removed, Jose bid on the job to paint the uneven surface that remained. His was the only bid to specifically address the job we posted. When contacted, he responded immediately and was friendly, professional and upbeat. He did an excellent job at a reasonable price. We definitely recommend him.

They were personable, professional, reasonably priced, came prepared, and finished the job with precision in record timing. I would love to use him again in my next project, and can’t wait to recommend him to others.
