When my husband and i got engaged we were looking for someone to not only marry us but also provide premarital counseling services. My sister recommended Imtasik famili counseling services. Ira did a fantastic job, he was very welcoming and has a great sense of humor. Although he was unable to marry us due to prior engagement, Ira helped us find someone available to marry us. I am not sure what all counselors talk about, but i would assume they all talk about similar things. Ira gave us advice on finances, how to "fight" fair and other topics as well. He never made us feel uncomfortable or judged for things we could not answer properly or at all for that matter. He was even very considerate about scheduling since I lived in Arizona at the time. I would definitely recommend Ira Lake at Imtasik family counseling services Inc. It is definitely worth it. Connie and Diego

I had my doubts about getting marriage counseling, but when I started going to Michelle she proved to me how helpful it really is. So much that I think every young couple needs coaching in order to avoid serious relationship issues in the future. With her loving sidekick/spouse helping out, it provides a male and female aspect of each situation that comes up. Overall, Michelle is a great, caring person that will provide you with positive energy, motivation, and useful resources for life (not just marriage counseling). Coaching or no coaching, it's always nice to be blessed with the presence of such a person in your lifetime.

I could write a complete memoir around my experience with Fawn. Before I get into it, I want to be very straightforward: Fawn: -Incredibly smart with huge range of knowledge in counseling and resources -Infinitely compassionate -Super easy to talk to and considerate of me -My biggest cheerleader (I'm talking up there next to my mom) -Worth every penny Me: (and you, future client!) -Stuck / Confused / Unhappy -Willing to be utterly honest with Fawn and myself -Open to making big and small lifestyle changes -Committed to spend as much reasonable time on coaching exercises and reading -(4 months later) Crazy in love with myself and so proud to have embarked on this journey to create my HELL YES life I liken my experience with Fawn to be, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." (Buddha) I was in a really tough place in my life, feeling like I had no direction or even a compass to guide me. Fawn struck me with a phrase in her bio that said that she helps women who feel like they are stuck. I totally identified with that. I knew that something needed to change in my life. I originally reached out with the intent that it would be my career, but working with Fawn became so much more. With her guidance and support I have made incredible changes in my life, self-appreciation, discipline, relationships, spirituality, and happiness. We started unpacking the deepest of deep limiting beliefs that I had about myself. In no way would I describe this process as easy, but the payoff is oh so sweet. I have personal testimonies from the people around me (some of who don't know that I'm working with a coach) that recognize a change in my daily happiness. One of the MANY things I have loved about working with Fawn is her ability to zero in on what I need. She has incredible knowledge combined with a natural intuition of how to help her clients grow. Even if I didn't know what I would accomplish on a given call, it was her talent and expertise that helped me each step along the way. She introduced me to new methods of communication and taught me many exercises that I will continue to use whenever I am faced with challenging situations for the rest of my life. She also recommends great books :) Another area of note where I noticed a huge change in the course of my coaching with Fawn is my self-discipline. I was really struggling with accomplishing anything that felt like "work". (Outside of work.) I was a writer that hadn't written in years and through my personalized action items (or assignments) I began a very therapeutic return to my art. I also started creating a schedule and setting goals for myself. Over time, the result and accomplishment of doing the "work" totally outweighed the dread that hovers around procrastination. I was able to change a really bad habit that I specifically identified in the beginning of this journey. I have a remarkable amount of quantifiable self-improvement in my google docs that I am so proud of. I have to second another review I saw saying if "you're wondering whether or not to take the plunge..." DO IT. Your life is about to change.

Murray was very experienced and professional with helping my husband and I get a better understanding of one another. Our relationship was strained over the course of several disagreements on key topics, but Murray helped provide us with some simple but powerful tools in order to work out our problems as a couple. His guidance and fair approach made sure we were both comfortable in speaking our mind. We were able to rebuild trust and repair the damaged foundation of our marriage at the end of Murray's counseling sessions. We would not hesitate to recommend him to a close friend if we saw they were having similar issues.

We worked extensively with Pastor Eddie for our premarital counseling. He made us realized that the "engagement" period of a relationship isn't just meant to plan a wedding, it's more importantly meant to plan for your marriage. He equipped us both with the essential tools needed for marriage and for a lifetime of agape love. He covers everything with the couple so you are entering this marriage with no surprises. You review everything from fair fighting, communication, finances, parenting, etc. and how imperative it is to keep God at the center of your life and your marriage. Anyone we talk to who is looking to get engaged or is engaged, we encourage them to definitely do premarital counseling and to contact Pastor Eddie.

Working with Saman for almost 3 years and I have to say that he has blossomed into a great professional. To be honest I was really skeptical if therapy was right for me, seeing as I only met him a year or so into his internship so I wasn't sure if he was able to help me. He is a very patient, compassionate and understanding person who takes this field of work to heart...It's pretty much his calling in life. Fast forward two and a half years later, I've learned ways to cope with my anxiety and have gained the confidence to accomplish my goals in my life.

I've been coming here for a couple months now. Deborah is very compassionate and understanding. She's been able to help me understand some deeper emotions that sometimes I'd rather just keep deep down inside. But I feel she is on the right path in helping me overcome some of my depression. I will continue to work with her and I would highly recommend her!

Tim Smith officiated our wedding on 10/18/14. He also performed our premarital counseling and did a wonderful job with both. Tim helped us to come up with a clear vision of what we wanted our marriage to be and gave us the tools to get there. He really personalized our vows and made our ceremony unique to us and very meaningful. He was always professional and dependable.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
