Gabriel W. says, "Austin replaced some lightbulbs in my recessed lighting fixtures, and also hung four of my bicycles on my ceilings & walls. The lighting fixture job was simple and straightforward (for him, not me), but he was still patient enough to show me how to do that job so I can handle it myself next time. As for the bikes, this job was much more difficult, as he needed to find the ceiling joists and studs in various parts of my apartment. He was really patient and committed to doing the job well, and ultimately he did an excellent job. He even installed a pulley system on my highest ceiling (~20 feet high) for one of my bikes, and he got it done quickly. And through it all he was polite and professional. I'd highly recommend hiring Austin for any job you have, large or small."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Does a general contractor need to enter my home?

Provided the project is located inside your home, completing the job would require a general contractor to enter your home. But if your project is located outdoors, a general contractor will likely not need to enter your home. Discuss your options with general contractors in your area before hiring.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

I specifically requested Paulo to fix my deck so that water no longer gathers on it. But unfortunately his work still causes water to gather and damage the deck in the future. I gave him a couple of weeks to go fix the issue but he hasn’t yet done so.

Tim did an excellent job refinishing my rooftop deck (and furniture) in San Francisco. He was highly responsive and was able to complete the job in far less time than others quoted. He was very professional and the deck looks spectacular!! The wood was Brasilian Ipe (notoriously hard deck wood) and it looks better than ever. He used a chemical wash + natural stain to restore it to the original warm hues vs. the gray it had become. Very grateful for Tim and his assistant's work!

Conor came and remodeled my old deck and done a great job, he replaced some of the framing below and aided me on what my options were as to handrails and deck boards. The end result was great, very professional and at a fantastic price. I will definitely use Conor in any of my future projects.

I hired Alex from Beyond Green to bring a couple of door frames up and frame in a pantry. Well, that went so well, we redid the entire kitchen! They installed lower cabinets and laid the plywood sub-counter to accept the pre-ordered quartz countertop. Tiled the entire wall backsplash, created floating shelves, installed new appliances and built a custom sliding door for the pantry. It came out awesome so good it was featured on CurbedSF. He was on time everyday and was thoughtful in his approach to working in an old building. I would definitely hire Beyond Green again, probably tomorrow! Update: We sold our condo and moved to Oakland, where Alex and his crew have been a fixture at our new house. We hired him again to complete a whole slew of random contracts and had them rebuild our 800sq.ft. deck. The old deck was under built and rotted out. Alex came in and built a bomb proof, 50 year deck complete with Ipe decking and was again, on time and at budget. We already have him looking at our other deck as well as finishing our basement, next year. Some things change, but Beyond Green has stayed the same with their honest policies and on time completions! Thanks Alex!

First time I have been thoroughly happy with a contractor service! Albino was great to work with from the start. We needed to sand and refinish a 300sq foot deck. He came quickly to give a quote (which was reasonable), then got the job started immediately and done within planned time frame (we were on a tight timeline). Rigoberto did most of the work and was very professional and kind. The quality of the work was great, even better than expected and cost was exactly as pre determined with no surprises. Would definitely recommend him to others and hire him again if needed.

We hired GBU to renovate our deck. Not only did they do a great job, Jordan and his team were super help all around and also helped us with other small jobs that needed to be taken care of. We asked for some customization and Jordan made sure he delivered exactly what we wanted, even when I was ready to give on some things because they seemed more complicated. As new homeowners, we are often hesitant about the work needed and the cost, but Jordan explained everything and gave us a fair quote. We will definitely be working with GBU construction developer again as we have more projects lined up!

I called on Woodbridge construction to look at a problem with our deck, we had considerable amount of dry rot and issues with termites. The extent of damage was more than my wife and I could bare but, Roland and his wonderful crew: GERMAN- the foreman , CEASAR and EDWARD. The team was given the go ahead to do the work, Roland assured the work would done precisely and if high quality. He was absolutely correct and I’ve been here every step of the process. There attention to detail was what caught my eye first thing, and there punctuality was next to none!! Never were they ever late to the job, they are on there second week and finishing up rapidly. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS TEAM IF EXPERTS TO TAKE ON ANY WORK ANYONE WOULD NEED! My wife and I will have them do all our remodeling for the near future.

I got several estimates for replacing some rotted boards and painting my deck. Rolando came in well under the other estimates, which made me slightly nervous initially, but Rolando seemed more than knowledgeable about what needed to be done. so I went with him. They were able to start relatively quickly, and finished the entire project in a week before rain was forecast to come. They replaced a number of rotted boards in two areas, patched up a few others, sanded it all to remove the ugly old red paint, and applied a beautiful gray. I have no complaints about the outcome; it has changed the entire look of the back of my house. He and his crew were respectful of my house and personal space while they worked around us, added on a few extra requests of mine for painting, and finished on time. I highly recommend.
