Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

Better for high-traffic areas

Recommended for interior floors, walls

Slightly more water-resistant

Softer, easier to cut

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

To say Sergio went above and beyond with my tile installation would be an understatement. Not only did he take on a lot of extra work by coordinating a sheetrock company to get us a nice base to do the tile on, but his actual installation looks excellent. He's a total perfectionist and if something can't be perfect he won't wait for you to find it, he'll discuss the issue with you as he works. I'm a new homeowner and at various points in the process Sergio reminded me that "it's your house! you get to make it how you want it!" which was reassuring because I may have been trying too hard not to come off as a diva. Very happy with our decision to go with Sergio and will definitely use him for future tile projects.

Junio and team installed tile on our patio floor and they were always on time, clean, and professional. He offered a lot of great advice. Definitely the most professional of all the bids we received. Would work with him again for sure.

Solomon was very active to secure the business stating that he could start the next day for $2400 but everything had to be removed from the room and buy the grout for the installation. I received a quote from Lowes for $3200 which included everything from removal, to put back and all materials. Upon arrival, he stated that he needed to charge $500 for the removal of the tiles. I agreed as my description was not 100% clear on removal. After removing the tile and linoleum, he told me that I needed to throw away myself. I argued that I was not informed and throwing out stuff has a cost and he took $100 total. He and his friend installed two areas of tile the first day and upon completion he asked for half of the money. I was not 100% comfortable as the job was not complete, but I paid 50%. He returned 1 week later which we agreed, but came 4 hours after the agreed time and finished most of the job and the following day he completed it. Upon completion, I asked about cleaning the tiles from the grout and he said that I needed to wash a couple of times. I tried washing them with white vinegar with no luck, purchased tile cleaner, no luck. I contacted Solomon one week after installation explaining that the tiles were not coming clean. He told me that there was a chemical from Home Depot that would work and he would give me the name that night. Two days later I asked again for the name. Three days later I asked for the third time and he gave it to me. The chemical was not in the Bay Area and I had to special order it, which I did. One week later it arrived and I tried using it and it did not work. I contacted Solomon again and he recommended changing the tiles. After asking 3 more times, he finally agreed to come Saturday at 10am. At 9:59am on Saturday he told me that he could not come because of his dad's doctor appointment. He sent his friend on Monday, which I left work early for, and his friend asked which tiles needed to be changed. I told him the dirty ones, which was 3/4 of the tiles. He got angry and blamed me for walking on the tile. I explained that it has been that way since installation and in fact one area of the kitchen had a mat and had never been stepped on. He told me that he could not do it on that day and someone would contact on Thursday to come on Friday. He wanted different tiles as my tiles from Lowes were not good. I spent another $420 in tile and grout. Well it is Friday and no one has arrived after he said they would arrive I tried calling multiple times and he won’t answer my call. Finally Saturday he agreed to come Monday. My wife stayed home, worked from home and someone showed up at 4pm and only destroyed the tiles. He said that he would come back the next day after 3pm when I can arrive home from work. Another no call-no-show day. After 6 phone calls and 3 texts he finally answered to say that someone would come today and install the tiles around 9am and the next day lay the grout. Well, they showed at 1:30 abd left by 4pm with 1/3 of the tiles laid. Another day with no kitchen. This is a never ending story. TBC

Enrique is FANTASTIC. We were caught short handed and needed someone to install some italian tile for our kitchen backsplash. Not only did Enrique respond in a timely manner, we worked out details quickly, he was able to schedule, and when it came time to do the work: he was prompt, communicative, and took such great pains to be so careful with installation work (there was no mess, no fuss). The end product was absolutely fantastic. Friends/family who have come to see it all agree that the job done was fantastic. So happy with his worksmanship and work ethic. Would highly recommend Enrique to any of our friends/family needing tile work.

Paulo did the backsplash tile install for our newly remodeled kitchen. He did an excellent job and it looks great, and his price was very fair. He is a really nice guy, polite and courteous. They cleaned up thoroughly after the end of each of the 3 work days. We would recommend.

We had a tough experience with Regson. We hired Regina and crew to retile our kitchen and bathroom. The bathroom turned out nicely, the Kitchen is a mess. There are uneven tiles, chips, and the grout is a disaster. The grout started to crack and flake a day after installation. There were also holes where no grout was applied. The solution was to reapply. That grout also chipped and cracked. In another effort to rectify, 'flex grout' aka caulking, was applied over the unsanded grout. This grout is not wearing well. It looks webbed, has sunken in spots, and hangs onto dirt. You can see the issues in the pics- and this is after scrubbing with bleach. As Regson was ultimately unwilling to fix it, we are now looking for another company to come out and address it. Other issues we had with the service included: misquoted tile needs (which results in us needing to make additional supply runs), missed planned days of work, miscommunications about the details of the job, a major plumbing issue that results from leveling compound being washed down our garage drains, and a final price that came in way over the initial no frills quote (which we somewhat expected, and would have been happy to pay had the job turned out well). This was the job that wouldn't end, and caused us much stress. And in the end, the result was not worth it. Overall, Regina was difficult to work with and incapable to accepting responsibility for anything that went wrong. I.e. Blaming the color and pattern of the tile we chose when grout was left on the surface of the tile and needed to be chipped and scrubbed off, blaming us for not buying additional tile (even though we had confirmed that the quoted sq footage included this), blaming the size of the tile (which is standard) for the grout issues... the list could go on. We have never had an experience like this with a Thumbtack vendor. Unfortunately, I would not recommend them for professional tile installation.

GADI Construction recently converted our tub into a shower area, by installing a new shower, tiles and completely remodeling our half bathroom. Everything was thoroughly inspected for water damage and certified. The team was professional and the project was executed on time. I couldn't be happier with the quality of the work, and I definitely plan on using the company for other remodel jobs. Special thanks to Inon - went above and beyond to deliver the best service .
