Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

  • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
  • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
  • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
  • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tax preparer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to conduct an appointment during the COVID-19 pandemic is virtually, as this will ensure that you remain within the CDC's social distancing guidelines.

Ask tax professional near you if they would be willing to give a consultation via phone call, Zoom, Skype or other video conferencing software to discuss the scope of work. Also, ask them how they handle payments and whether they will be able to conduct all of their services remotely.

Is it better to have a CPA do your taxes?

Hiring a certified public accountant (CPA) could be a better option instead of doing your taxes by yourself, but it depends on your tax situation and preferences. Having a CPA do your taxes is usually recommended if you have a business or any type of side job, or if you’ve been contacted by the IRS for a tax-related matter. Others who can benefit are those who own rental properties or have many assets. You can also hire a CPA if you need help understanding what deductions or credit you might qualify for.

What is a tax preparer called?

A tax preparer can take the form of several different job titles, but they must have an IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) to be authorized to prepare federal tax returns, according to the IRS. Some titles may include enrolled agents, who are licensed by the IRS, as well as certified public accountants (CPAs). Some tax attorneys may offer tax preparation and planning services, though not all are qualified to do this.

Is it worth it to pay someone to do your taxes?

There are several reasons it could be worth it to have an experienced professional do your taxes instead of self-filing. For example, it can help reduce the chance of you making a mistake that could land you in trouble with the IRS. And, it could save you time for other important tasks. If you have a side job, rental property or many assets, having someone do your taxes can pay off in the short- and long-run.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tax preparation services?

Before you hire a tax professional, visit their business profile to see how they handle payments. Many CPAs and tax experts accept digital payments through Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Zelle and other online platforms. More businesses may be changing their payment methods to accommodate social distancing. Check with your tax preparer to see how they handle payments.

Does a tax preparer need to enter my home?

It is not typically necessary for a tax preparer to enter your home. Many CPAs and tax professionals operate remotely. Ask the tax professional if they can conduct their services remotely, and see what precautions they have in place during social distancing.

I hired CPA George Dimov to prepare business taxes for a small corporation. He was very quick to respond, very communicative throughout the process, and extremely thorough. He completed the work quickly, kept me posted every step of the way, and was very patient with my questions and feedback. I recommend him if you're seeking help with accounting or tax preparation needs.

Working with Charlotte to do our taxes was a great experience for my wife and I! Our taxes were more complicated this year now that my wife has started working freelance for her own business, so it was super helpful to have a dedicated pro available to answer questions and fill out all the necessary forms needed to minimize our tax bill. Not only did Charlotte painlessly fill out our tax forms for 2018, but she also gave us many tips on how to take actions to better prepare for taxes for next year and beyond.

Troy is a fantastic tax preparation expert. He has over 5 years of experience working at H&R block so he has all the knowledge of a true tax pro. Unlike the big firms, Troy truly cares about his clients and spends time with them trying to maximize their refunds. He also takes time to explain tax implications and laws. I learned so much about taxes after the first meeting! He's friendly and arrives on time. My refund was significantly higher than what I would have gotten at a big firm.

The job went well. He was friendly and professional to deal with. He assisted me with tax preparation and assisted me with understanding my liabilities as a Canadian consulting in the United States. We had a minor hiccup with some missing details relating to the special tax considerations of a consultant like myself, but he was very apologetic and fixed the problem. I would recommend Jofi.

Do not hire unless you enjoy micro-managing your tax consultant. I hired Patrick for my personal tax return for 2019, as well as some outstanding items from before. My only ask was to have my (pretty boilerplate) 2019 taxes prepared in time. Without consulting me, Patrick filed for an extension for the 2019 return. He wasn't able to meet the extended deadline. Many times I was promised results on a date, but pretty much never saw any progress. I finally got a draft for the 2019 return in December of 2020. There were even more delays and excuses for filing the return. Eg. towards the end, claiming filing my return was unethical as there was a slight chance I might have to file a W2C later on — this is pretty standard afaik. My 2019 return was never filed. I pulled the plug in late January. Patrick agreed to return the payment for items from before 2019, but kept the 2019 charge in full.

I had received an IRS audit letter on real estate activity with a relatively hairy backstory. It's one of the scariest letters that I wish upon no one. But I desperately wanted the right professional to help me manage the response in the best possible way, while not paying an outrageous fortune for office overhead.. So I decided to try looking for help on Thumbtack. I received numerous quotes, some from providers with more reviews than Jennifer because they've been doing this longer. But while I was vetting everyone with questions, Jennifer was the most responsive by far, with excellent communication. That was an important sign of service level to me, so I decided to give it a shot with her, and never looked back!! Jennifer was so knowledgeable about the inner workings of IRS - the triggers they're sensitive to, how to best prepare filings and responses to the client's advantage within legal limits, historical cases she has seen. She was extremely detail-oriented, organized and thorough in her work - all especially important traits in a tax professional. She communicated clearly and frequently, and most importantly, gave me great advice about different options and their consequences. I needed not only a great do-er, but most importantly a trustworthy advisor on my side for this one, and she was exactly all of that. I'm very grateful for her essential help with this harrowing experience, and wanted to write this review so other folks can benefit from the same great help I received. Now the IRS has responded saying they accepted the response she helped me prepare - the best possible outcome I could hope for. I was so pleased with her professionalism that I had asked her to be our tax accountant going forward for my fiancée and I, before even knowing the outcome of our IRS audit. Would recommend her without reservation for anything tax related.
