Joe Chung is terrific! We needed some pictures of a farm house for a listing on Zillow. On the customer service side, Joe promptly responded to my Thumbtack inquiry and quickly sent me a quote that was very reasonable. He promptly returned my phone calls and answered my emails. He sent a written, straight-forward contract that accurately reflected our agreement. The financial transaction was easily executed using PayPal. Joe met our requirements for scheduling the shoot and arrived early for the appointment, even though he had to drive several miles to the location. On the artistic side Joe proceeded in a very business-like manner and shot the agreed upon number of pictures and a few extra pictures as a bonus. The pictures were wonderful – creative angles, well lit, inside and outside, and made the house look very attractive. The pictures far exceeded our expectations of what could be accomplished. The pictures were available for download the next day. We are so please with Joe’s work and would readily engage him again. If you need real estate pictures I recommend that you hire Joe to take the pictures. You will not be disappointed in the pictures or the attention to customer service.

Art was fantastic! My wife and I hired him to shoot a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom vacation house we manage near Universal City. He was on time, incredibly efficient, very attentive to detail, and produced an array of stunning pictures. We would definitely hire him again and would definitely recommend him to others in need of real estate photography.

Wow! What a pleasure it’s been working with ROF! The entire staff has been such a breath of fresh air. There’s honestly a HUGE reason I keep going back and back to them for all my video content, photography, and editing. ROF exudes nothing but greatness. The old saying goes, “if you show up on time —- you’re late” Well ROF seriously applies this to all areas of their company and professionalism. They go above and beyond any of my expectations I have ever had on any on my projects with them. They deliver at the NEXT LEVEL. Thank you ROF Industries Management and crew. Can’t wait to get our next project underway!!!

My wife and I wanted to focus more of our budget towards a nice video we can share with our family and friends for many years to come. When we started looking around, we found that many places were not experienced in editing and candid moments or were just way out of our budget. When we received samples from Attis Photography we instantly knew that this was the right fit for us. I cannot stress how professional this team was from beginning to end. Chris and Anita were absolutely amazing to work with. They answered all of our questions and asked us questions that we didn’t even think of without stressing us out. It was clear that they had a lot of experience with weddings. They were so accommodating to our needs and had this calm and collected vibe the entire time. I don’t really remember seeing them the day of the wedding because they were so good at what they do. They made me and my wife feel so comfortable during the phone calls, emails and in person meetings we had with them. My wife cried during the highlight video and again during the full length video, my eyes may have gotten sweaty. The professionalism from this team matches the work they produce. They were truly a blessing to work with for our wedding. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone who is looking for video/photos for their big day. The only regret I have was not booking them for our photos!

Shaun is one of the greatest professional photographers whom I have ever met. He was willing to educate me on all aspects of how to get the best shots I wanted/needed for my company's real estate project. He made sure that I, as the customer, was happy with everything being done. His prices also seem to be some of the most competitive around for this kind of service. Shaun's professionalism, expertise, and enthusiasm for this work make him an unbeatable player in this field of work. I wholeheartedly recommend him for aerial videography and photography work. Also, his copters are very cool to watch as they fly around!

After interviewing several others for the management of my 6 unit building which is in LA and I live in Santa Barbara, I decided on Kyle Douvros. Met with him and he is young, but extremely professional, eager and has the backing of his Dad's real estate company of 30 years. So time will tell, but it is starting out just the way I want it to be.

We needed an infographic to tell our successes in climate action as a city. There is a lot of complex information to convey in a small amount of real estate. On top of that, we had a very short turnaround time. Allen learned our language and conveyed our story with multiple versions and iterations. He was very understanding, patient and accommodating. Now his work is being shared with the world by our City Council members!

I worked with Kevin on a local political campaign and the entire process was very enjoyable. I explained the concept to him and he was able to deliver exactly what I wanted to promote my candidate. Not only that, but the profesional insight & suggestions he provided along with clear communication throughout proved him to be a better choice than other videographers whom we reached out to. It was also very useful that Kevin had a fantastic studio which really amplified the quality of the video and the overall experience for us. I’m glad that we could use quote-matching to get top-knotch quality at a cost that works with our budget.

I needed someone to help me with a project that included a combination of photography, video, and music...I was amazed by Jordans work - After reviewing some of it, his camera and video skills exceeded my expectations but it was when we met for our consultation that I realized how great a guy he really is and how comfortable I would be working with him! SO SO important!! Jordan is very professional, keeps up with communication whether it's through email or over the phone. He is actually fun and easy to work with also, not like many photographers I've come in contact with that were overly anal about their work. He collaborated with me, paid attention to my own ideas and took them into consideration as he made magic...My project came out amazing and I'd say Jordan is truly a master of his craft... Definitely would recommend him to anyone looking for video work, photography, etc!

"Maria took time to understand what I wanted (condo) at the beginning by asking the right questions right away about price, locale, etc....... She was very dedicated to my personal real estate needs as she spent nearly 3 weeks driving me around to see many locations/properties. She knew the San Fernando Valley trends extremely well. I am incredibly happy with the place I ended up purchasing, and I only got it because Maria was quick to see the listing as we put in an offer the same day for my new Tarzana residence. I am incredibly happy with my new condo purchase and, there is no way i could have pulled it off without Maria's work and guidance, not just in finding the condo, but also guiding me through the bidding and escrow process. Maria has a great "work ethic" and I would highly recommend her, as I'm sure I will use her service again whenever I need to find another place (to live, vacation property, or rental)...just a great experience working with her!"   -Anthony Pett, Client

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a real estate agent do?

Real estate agents help their clients buy, sell, and rent commercial and residential properties. There are also real estate agents that sell industrial and agricultural real estate, but the majority sell residential properties. To become a real estate agent, you must be at least 18 years old, successfully complete real estate courses, and pass a real estate exam. Be sure to check for any required licensing, too. Often real estate agents will earn 5 percent to 6 percent of the total home sale price for their work in representing their client. Typically this commission is split equally between the buyer’s agent and the seller’s agent. Here is an overview of what a real estate agent does, according to the United States Department of Labor:

  • Represent clients who are looking to buy, sell and rent properties.
  • Stay knowledgeable about regional real estate prices, mortgages, market conditions and related information, and advise clients accordingly.
  • Determine competitive market prices by comparing properties.
  • Create and publicize lists of properties for sale, including details such as location and features.
  • Market properties through advertisements, open houses and listing services.
  • Show prospective buyers or renters properties.
  • Present purchase offers to sellers for consideration.
  • Mediate negotiations between buyer and seller.
  • Ensure that all terms of purchase contracts are met.
  • Prepare documents, such as loyalty contracts, purchase agreements and deeds.

What should you look for in a real estate agent?

When you’re hiring a real estate agent you want to find a qualified pro who can negotiate the best deal for your home — whether you’re buying or selling. Reading reviews will help you weed out obvious bad operators; you want to work with someone who treats their clients with fairness and respect. That said, you also want someone who can play hardball and maximize your real estate deal. Ask for references from recent clients, and be sure to call them.

Experts encourage you to interview more than one prospective real estate agent before hiring. A home sale or home purchase is a big deal — sometimes the biggest deal in a person’s life — and you want to find an agent who will work hard for you. In today’s market, having a real estate agent who is social media savvy and has an attractive online presence is critical. Ask the agent how they plan to market your house. Review their listings, and ask yourself if they have professional photos with homes that are professionally staged. If the answer is no, they might not have the marketing savvy you’re looking for. Ask what price they would list your house at and why. Pay attention to how they communicate with you during your initial interviewing phase. Are they too busy to respond for several days? Are they clear and helpful? This information is a clue to how they’ll engage during the entire process.

What's the difference between a real estate broker and an agent?

Real estate agents and real estate brokers both help clients buy, sell, and rent residential and commercial properties. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, real estate brokers are licensed to manage their own real estate businesses. Real estate agents cannot have their own real estate office and must work under a broker. Real estate brokers often have real estate firms and employ real estate agents. Those real estate agents may be employees of the firm, or they may work on contract and earn part of any commission they bring into the firm.

If you are a homeowner ready to sell or a buyer in the market for a new home, either a real estate broker or a real estate agent can help you achieve your goal. What is more important than their title is their track record and client success stories. When interviewing real estate agents or brokers to help you buy or sell a home, ask about their recent sales history as compared with the original listing prices. If you’re selling a home, ask how they would market your home and what price they would list it at. Whether you hire an agent or broker, you want a professional who will have your best interests at heart.

What do real estate agents charge?

Real estate agents typically don’t charge a set rate to their clients, but rather earn a commission on the price of the final home sale. In traditional real estate, there is a buyer’s agent and a seller’s agent. The two agents receive 5 percent to 6 percent of the final home sale price and split it evenly, meaning they each earn roughly 2.5 percent to 3 percent of the total home sale. If you are a home seller, you may have fees associated with the sale that are above and beyond the commission the agents earn. The real estate agent may have you pay marketing fees, MLS fees, early cancellation fees, or more. Always ask pricing details before signing a contract so you clearly understand your financial obligations. Here are some of the average (and common) costs that can arise when selling a home:

  • Home inspection: $200-$350 or more, depending on region.
  • Home appraisal: $250-$400 or more, depending on region.
  • Professional real estate photography: $275-$550 or more, depending on photographer, square footage of house, and special requests like sunset shots.
  • Closing costs: Often split between the seller and buyer. An average range for the buyer to pay is between 3 percent and 4 percent, with the seller paying a lower fee at 1 percent to 3 percent of the home’s price.
