I can't say enough great things about Jose. After being flaked on by a bunch of different handymen around San Diego, Jose was a breath of fresh air. On time, fair prices, great communication, outstanding work and a super nice guy. He put's 150% into everything he does. I will be hiring him again for ALL of my future projects. -Adam-

our freezer was oozing water, creating a skating rink at the bottom i had to chip out every couple of days with a knife. luis quickly diagnosed and repaired, cleaned all sorts of ick from beneath that were clogging air flow and overburdening the machinations (we have two cats and two dogs, and there was a hair sweater under there). he explained how the fridge has been running nonstop because it couldn't, essentially, breathe. it is usually all a-rumble...but it has been quiet as a mouse since he left. he also jacked up the height of its front pegs so it's on little high heels... it's so quiet it seems like he forgot to plug it back in. amazing! very pleased. got lecture about importance of regular maintenance.... will take it to heart. his work guaranteed for one year, which is nice.

Inspect an old air conditioning unit in a 40+ year old town home for prospective buying. Performed diagnostic tests to check the functioning and efficiency of the unit. Answered all our questions well. Overall good experience and worth the money spent.

Kevin Roskelley of Independent/Prestigeous Heating & AirConditioning immediately diagnosed the problem upon his arrival and my A/c was repaired in less than 20 minutes. Jason of Independent/Prestigeous Heating & Air Conditioning didn’t even try to sell any unnecessary costly recommendations. I highly recommend this company.

The technician was great, did very good work, and was on time. I felt the project was overpriced for the service provided -- applying new insulation to my furnace pipes in the garage.

Excellent scheduling, The Sears Home Improvements Team was able to come to my house on short notice to replace a furnace. Options for replacement were explained in detail. I opted for a top-of-the line energy efficient furnace, replacement of the duct network, and addition of a vent to a bedroom that had been converted from a garage. The work was completed in one day. I also received zero percent financing for 18 months. Highly recommend Sears for Home Improvement.

I got quotes from at least 8 contractors and Eddie gave me a very competitive price. He also has a great review on yelp (check with him for how to see the reviews). He patiently answered all my questions and finished within one day for a whole house AC installation. It was the right timing for the hot season, and so far it's running good and strong. I will surely recommend Eddie to my friends/neighbors or anyone if they ask me for suggestion. At least give Eddie a call/message before making the final decesion!

Ive had multiple companies come out to give me estimate for a new Air conditioner and furnace, Cano air was the most professional and thorough company by far. Javier was very knowledgeable and gave me lots of options and compared to all the bigger companies his prices and warranties were the best. I would honestly recommend it them to all my family and friends for sure.

Robbie Duin and his crew replaced the roof on my barn. The job included (6) skylights and (4) air vents. I'm very pleased with the level of workmanship, quality of materials and overall result. I would not hesitate to recommend Duin-It Roofing to friends, neighbors, family and anyone interested in a good job at a fair price.

We called Don Schmitt HVAC after the first big heat wave of San Diego. We knew our A/C was running low on coolant, but had putting off another maintenance item for the house. But after the last heat wave, we knew we needed cooler air ASAP. We had initially called another company we used before, but were told that the next available appointment was in over a week. Called company B - was told it was a 3-week wait due to the heat wave. Called company C - was told they could come out at the end of the week, but was informed that the technician would drop by sometime between 12pm -5pm on a weekday! Finally I found Don Schmitt and was happy to see the good reviews! They promptly responded and said someone could be at the house by the weekend. We were given a 2-hour waiting window...much more reasonable than waiting 5 hours! Don, called when he was on his way. He was very nice and professional. Service was quick. Good price too. We will be calling Don Schmitt again if we need HVAC services in the future.

All County was a great option to repair my AC unit at a reasonable price. The technician who came out was quick, and he came out on a Saturday morning after I called on a Friday. The number you are calling is his cell phone and he also communicates via text which is great. He let me know the issues that my older system has, and brought my older system up to a much better standard than it was before. Eventually, I will have to replace the HVAC system in my house (is from the 80s-90s), but I was given another few good years of work on my system. He cleaned the coils, replaced the Freon, and cleaned out the system, installed new filters.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
