I have had numerous message sessions with Matt for the past three years, (on a weekly basis, sometimes every other week), and I can say without hesitation that he is a very skillful, knowledgeable, professional therapist. He knows just where to concentrate and how deep to go, combining deep tissue massage with a much lighter touch. By the end of the hour my pain and stress have melted away. He is very experienced in deep tissue massage, which I prefer most, and providing insight on health and relaxation. I highly recommend Matt as your massage therapist.

I recommend his healings to friends going though tough times, people having health issues, even for animals in need. A friend told me about Fernando and now I'm telling all of my friends about him! :) Thank you!

I went to Ranee today and she was amazing! I had my first Reiki session and I left feeling rejuvenated and so balanced! I made my appointment with her because I had been feeling stressed and feeling the effects on my body, after my reiki session with her I feel back to normal! She has a really good personality and she is very sweet. The room also smelled really good and I loved the essential oils she used. Ranee is so intuitive she picked up on so many things that I hadn't even told her about! If your healthy or experiencing any health problems or just want to go for fun I definitely recommend going to her because it will benefit you. I will be going back :)

In order to improve my regular detox activities I looked for a place which offered infrared sauna sessions. I found Massage Green Spa in San Marcos and booked my introductory session combined with a facial! The team was exceptional friendly and I enjoyed the atmosphere as well as the superb service so much that since then I continued to stop by at least once or twice a week for infrared sauna sessions and if possible a massage or facial at least once a month. By the way, those sauna sessions are very relaxing as well especially combined with the eucalyptus aroma oils! I would recommend Massage Green Spa to any health and wellness conscious person!

I have been working with Jessica for 2 months and feel great! When we started out I was fatigued, cranky, and definitely addicted to sugar. Jessica determined the reasons behind my ailments, explaining everything as she went. She helped me to plan a proper diet in addition to temporary supplements to get my digestive tract and adrenal glands back to normal. I'm so interested in this process and have learned alot about myself. Jessica is very thorough, professional, sweet (hence the last name), caring and kind. She really knows her stuff. In the event she doesn't know the answer to something (believe me I ask alot), she spends time to research and email back with a comprehensive answer. I have sent numerous text messages from the grocery store asking questions and she always has a quick response to guide me in the right direction. I am concerned about the direction my health would have taken if I hadn't started working with her. I wasn't necessarily eating terrible but I had my moments - and with a crappy digestive system, I believe I was eating my way to more serious issues. She has been my go-to person for support and nutrition! I also did a reiki session with her (my first time). It was a calming and enjoyable experience. She is such a unique person to know! I highly recommend working with her if you have any dietary concerns and want to feel better. I feel great! I have recommended her to my friends and clients and intend to keep working with her on this journey.

I have been a patient of Justin's for around two years and I feel it is time for me to truly express my gratitude toward Justin and the healing has provided for me through his acupuncture. Let me start by saying that I am a Registered Nurse in an ICU that practices primarily Western Medicine. I first presented to Justin with a multitude of symptoms from plantar fasciitis, chronic stomach and bloating issues, back pain, hip pain, depression and anxiety from the process of divorce and overall feeling of being run down and just tired all the time. I had already seen GI specialists and podiatrists, Internal Medicine Specialists, allergists, neurologists, chiropractors and a therapist weekly. I was beyond frustrated and became hopeless that I would never find relief or answers to my ailments and began to think it was possibly all in my head...part of that is true. Justin does more than just provide the typical needle therapy. Over the years he has treated me with acupressure, cupping, auriculotherapy, healing touch/Reiki, and the other traditional eastern modalities that I don't even know how to pronounce. But one skill I am most grateful for is his ability to guide and teach while I'm receiving the treatment. For me it is like a meditation and it was/is this process that I feel helped me to truly start healing. Justin guided me to pay more attention and recognize my thought patterns and would shed light onto how these thoughts impact my body and daily activities. He teaches me about the channels and the Chi, about different types of beneficial herbs, teas and foods I can incorporate and if your lucky he will share one of his original jokes. I could tell you the exact treatment I received that I feel changed my life. It was the moment that I finally gave in and stopped getting in the way of my own healing. I let my guard down, I cried for almost an hour and I "let it go". Justin had asked me if I was holding onto identities that didn't serve me or if I was expressing my true self to the world. I faced my reality and gave permission to myself to become whole again and to be me. In our few years together this happened only three months ago. From that moment on I became aware that it really was a patient/provider relationship. Sure I would get relief every time I received a treatment, but now actually trying to focus on the needles and the energy flow, clearing my mind and inviting the healing to occur it is a completely different experience. I have had enormous relief from my pain, eczema went away, depression is gone and I've stopped seeing a therapist, my GI issues are under control, I sleep better and I feel like I am me and I am enough. I do still have my Western Medicine MD's that I see but I know that I would never have come this far in my journey of healing and self reflection were it not for Justin's wealth of knowledge, kindness, empathy, education and obvious desire to help his patients on their path to optimal health and self discovery. I will be forever grateful.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

    • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
    • Nutritional medicine
    • Botanical medicine
    • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
    • Hygiene
    • Counseling
    • Minor surgery
    • Homeopathy
    • Acupuncture
    • Intravenous and injection therapy
    • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

    Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

    • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
      • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
    • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
      • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
      • Do I need a referral?
      • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
      • What will the co-pay be?
      • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
    • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

    Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
