Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

These movers were outstanding!! They did an amazing job. They worked hard and fast, and they took good care to move our things without a scratch. We hired them for our move, which took almost 12 hours, and they were not even going to stop to eat. We are planning on hiring them again for our next move!! They have my highest recommendation.

The guys were great, they came and got to work right away and were pleasant to speak with during the move. I appreciated the kindness and professionalism they possessed, though I will say I wish they had brought their own water during the 6 hour move...other than that, I would definitely recommend their services!

This was the first time I ever used Thumbtack and if everyone is as great as Mike / C.M.N Construction, I'll be using this site a heck of a lot more. Right away Mike's bid stood out from the rest, I appreciated that he took the time and wrote exactly what he would be providing, time it would take and itemized the price. After selecting his bid, Mike immediately opened up communications without me first having to pester him. He worked with my crazy schedule and would always emailed me back immediately when I had a question. On the day of the move, he texted me in the morning to confirm our time, then again 15 minutes before arriving to let me know he would be on time. Mike and his partner were organized, fast and really cool when I asked if I could move even more than I originally anticipated. He even asked if I wanted more things moved without trying to upsell me on his bid price. At the final destination, Mike once again careful yet fast getting everything unloaded and neatly set-up in the new location. After finishing, he genuinely seemed surprised when I asked how much more I should add to the original price for all the extra work he performed. I really hate moving... but Mike and his partner made this experience so much easier. They were extremely professional, courteous and pleasant to be around. I would have no problem highly recommending them and plan on using his services again in the future. Mike, if you read this - thanks again for the great job and being such a great sport!

I made it clear that we were loading a 16 ft POD. I asked if they had experience doing so because I was told it’s a bit tricky and you have to be very strategic to fit all of your things into the POD. They assured me that they “load PODS all the time.” One of the guys that came was nice. The other was a jerk. They both had no idea how to load a pod and wasted so much space that at last minute we ended up having to give thousands of dollars of our stuff away because we couldn’t fit it in the POD. We were moving across country and had no choice. It was the most stressful situation ever!!! They we loud and not respectful of the face that I had a sick baby who was trying to sleep upstairs (added to all of the moving stress) Best part is at the end the jerk guy had the nerve to ASK for a tip?!?!!! WTH are you serious.. Unprofessional and dishonest was my experience with Rockstar

We had a language barrier to work through and had some difficulties. The guys arrived and sat in the truck for a while while I was standing there waiting. We had more stuff than planned so that seemed to bother the guys a bit. However, they were not very approachable and during the day. And at the end of it all, the guy asked for a tip and suggested the amount. Was not what I was expecting. Overall they moved my stuff with care and did not damage anything but the customer service aspect is lacking a bit.

The guys really did a good job moving my one bedroom apartment to my house. Unfortunately, they took 1 hour to drive 4 miles and charged me for the entire hour. I specifically asked if I would be charged double for drive time. They said no. I asked if they were going to take a lunch break. They said no. They said they would buy gas and meet me at the next location. Even if they got gas, the drive takes AT MOST 10 minutes. I feel like they did that simply to get an additional $110 out of me.
