My daughter is a 9th grader at Point Loma High School. She transferred from a private Catholic school and has never seen the Integrated Math that they now offer in the public schools system. She has always battled math anxiety and I was very worried with the new math being offered. I was referred to Nina from a mutual friend right before school started and my daughter instantly bonded with her. She felt so at ease with Nina and she explained things in a way that she could easily understand. Nina even went so far as to attain a copy of her math book and reached out to her teacher. I am so very happy to say my daughter received an A her first semester and is maintaining an A in her second semester. I have recommended Nina to other students who are having a positive result as well. If you are looking for a math tutor - Nina is the best!

Eric or Mr. B as the kids call him, has done an exceptional job, at helping my cousins exceed in school and make them feel confident about learning again and that's it's ok to get the extra help needed. Thanks again Mr.B!

Matt is extremely thorough, focused, and well-prepared. He gauges the student's needs and tailors the lessons accordingly. As with any tutor, your student HAS to do the work he assigns for the most success on test day.

I recently went back to school and needed some help reviewing math for my college algebra class. There was a lot of material we were expected to know that I has forgotten because of the break I took from school. Jocelyn helped me find the gaps I had, filled them, and showed me how they applied to the work I was doing in class. Everything finally made sense, and I got an A in the class! Thank you Jocelyn!

Travis tutored me for about two years in my latter half of high school. He provided me all the necessary tools so score extremely high on the SAT and subject tests. He cares so much about his students and their success and goals in life. I'm currently at the college of my dreams, University of Southern California, and without Travis' constant mentoring I am unsure if I would have been given this opportunity. I cannot think of someone more highly recommended in my community to not only tutor kids but also guide them through the trials of growing up than Travis.

Konie is an outstanding educator, motivator and advocate for my 1st grader. She has helped our child read and write and after 3 months, he is now above grade level. He was so frustrated and upset with school before we came to her, that I couldn't get him to write his name without him becoming upset or having a tantrum. She has a progressive program, including structured rewards, pre-planned lessons that build skills and reinforce learning step-by-step. Her style is positive and caring. I endorse Konie without any reservations. I'm so glad we found her!

Couldn't be happier with my experience with Katie! She helped me with graduate school application essays that were very short. I wanted to get a lot of information across and she helped me navigate it, so my ideas were concise, genuine and eloquent. I highly suggest meeting with her in person as after just one meeting, we were able to construct an outline for an essay that before had been a mess of a free write. She enjoys doing this work and cares about each project, to the point she researched the specific program I was applying to, so as to more properly gear my personal statement for them. Without a doubt my go to for professional proofreading and editing.

I have taken private lessons with Evelyn to refresh my advanced conversational skills. Evelyn comes prepared to our session, and always make sure to take you out and over your comfort zone. She makes the session interesting by introducing reading material on different subjects, discussing them with open end questions, analyzing the grammar and applying lessons learned to your own individual situation. She makes learning fun and challenging at the same time!

I was working as a high professional at a very prominent company when my colleague offered English lessons to improve my communication skills. After intensive screen among high ranking candidates, she found Alice. Alice made me understand what was wrong in my communication style. She had the most correct way of addressing the core of the problem without affecting my feelings. Although she was not an expert in cell based assays, Alice was capable of providing an advice on how to structure my thoughts and provided directions on how to compose a good e-mail. She made me feel capable of blogging and reaching wider audience. Alice’s advices and insights moved me at deeper level. After her teaching I was finally capable of "decomposing" my cultural heritage and composing myself again within a new cultural landscape. Alice made me believe in myself "in English". I am not reading “for my soul” only in my mother tongue anymore but also in English. After her lessons, I am capable of reaching to people for whom I care the most: my beloved friends and coworkers.

I am completing my undergraduate degree (marketing/management) but needed extra support passing the tougher classes like finance and supply chain management. Working full time it was important for me to find a tutor that could help me grasp "the big picture" quickly (after a long day at work) so I could complete weekly assignments on time & Maria has NEVER let me down! If you're looking for a tutor that's knowledgeable, takes the necessary time to ensure you understand the core concepts of the course, and truly supports you EVERY STEP of the way - do not hesitate and hire her immediately. I ended up keeping her as a tutor for other classes because she brings the lessons to life with her knowledge & unique insight. I graduate this Fall & have no gray hair & "peace of mind" because of this amazing lady! She's your personal "educational champion" for when times get tough (and they do for all students) - she's a tutor but I consider her a friend & would recommend her to students at all levels. Kent Every class I've had her help in have resulted in A's & I'm actually using finance concepts all the time now! I look

BoostAcademy was an amazing find for my 2 boys. They changed schools recently and were completely lost with new Common Core math ideas. 2 lessons per week for just a few weeks and they are back at the top of their class! It's a great system that is easy to use and incredibly valuable to my family and probably yours.

    About

My name is Stephen Riley, and I am a traveling music and English teacher. Along with my wife, Annelisa Riley, I have been working for the past two years to hone in on what makes the English language easy for some and hard for others. After working in China for a year teaching English to students ranging from age 1-12, Annelisa and I began dreaming and scheming of ways to improve the process of learning English while having a lot of fun. Both Annelisa and I have been deeply moved by music and involved in the creation of music from early in life. Now, we believe we have found a way of teaching that speaks for both us as teachers and you as students. Everyone loves music, and everyone needs to communicate to have long-term success. Our curriculum uses classic folk music and contemporary songs to bring the student deeper into the English language. By focusing on the poetic lyrics of folk music, we are able to bring the student a more compulsory understanding of how to form sentences and adequately express themselves. Then we begin working with the student on learning to play some of these songs, focusing on guitar chords, strumming patterns, and for the more experienced students, harmonica playing. Finally, we work with the student to create an original piece of music in English that they can be proud to call their own work of art. Riley School of American Folk Music is not just about learning to speak the English language. It is about learning to create.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
