If you're looking for a skilled and resourceful handyman who is punctual, responsible, and value for your money, David Gomes is your man. I initially hired David to repair two pocket doors - one was stuck and the other did not slide smoothly. I was a little nervous that he had to remove the moulding to repair the doors, but he did a great job. I, also, had him adjust some of my cabinet doors and he worked on my patio doors and screens so they now open so smoothly. David is, indeed, a specialist on doors, but he can do so much more that I had him do other things in my house. . .install 3 new toilets and a new lock and deadbolt on a door, re-grouted some tiles, replace spray hose, moulding in powder room etc. Whenever he finishes a task, he always asks you to check it so that you are completely satisfy with the job. He made several trips to the hardware store to get materials he needed and didn't charge me for his time. I have a large custom home and have used many contractors/handymen for various jobs and I would highly recommend David. I am so glad I found him on Thumbtrack. . .he will be the only handyman I will use from this day forward.

Vyron and his team were great. They remodeled a small guest house for us - flooring, ceiling, painting, plumbing, windows, cabinetry. It was a 3 day job. They always showed up on time, worked extremely hard, were professional and pleasant. Vyron is very focused on doing a quality job. He clearly has a lot of experience doing all types of remodeling projects, and offered several valuable suggestions. I would definitely use again.

I am an owner/builder and have been a tradesmen all of my life and generally I work alone. I pride myself with a fit and finish second to none. On a recent remodel of my brothers apartment I needed some additional assistance to expedite the completion of the project installing Crown Molding and installing the entry door. I found Thumbtack on the net and reluctantly gave it a try, not know what might show up at my door step. Francisco and Vladimir were the first to reply to my inquiry for a carpenter. We set an initial time to meet and review my job and they arrived promptly. I told them that all of the work thus far was done by me and that the thought of having a stranger do finish work to my standard on my job, scared me. They assured me that their work would be to my satisfaction and I reluctantly said ok, when can you start? On their start date they arrived on time with all of the tools necessary to complete there tasks. I observed them working methodically and with for sight and by the days end they did not meet my expectation, they exceeded it! The work was beautiful, well thought out and executed. The best part was after explaining what I desired, I didn't need to micro manage them through the process, they just got it done on their own to perfection! I would not hesitate to hire these two fine young craftsman again, and I am sure I will. Their rates were fare, the work outstanding and they cleaned up after each days work without my asking. Need more of a reference? Email me at: Give these two a chance, they will not disappoint you! John B.

Alex has done a variety of things for us in our home & all were very well done. He is fast, efficient, honest & very skilled. I highly recommend him for just about anything you might need in your home or business. Things Alex have done for us include: ~ Installing high quality vinyl siding & trim to withstand our very rough, wet environment. Still look great years later! ~ Installed custom soap stone kitchen counters including under mount sinks & back splashes - gorgeous! ~ Finished our basement to create a guest bedroom, bathroom & office for which our visiting friends & family really enjoy. ~ Super insulated our attic which paid for itself in reduced heating bills in a couple years. ~ Rebuilt our aging brick walkway & patio & they still look beautiful. ~ Rebuilt our fireplace removing old bricks & replacing them with a variety of stones for a much more modern look & feel. Obviously, I highly recommend Alex for any building project you might have. Jon P.

Mike renovated my very small San Francisco bathroom. He had some good ideas for how to maximize my small space and in the end I ended up with more storage space that I thought possible. He's super laid back and not difficult to be around which is a plus when someone is in your house everyday. The work was good and I thought he was honest with what he charged. I was very happy with the end result. My kitchen will be next someday and I'll definitely be giving Mike a call.

Having just moved into a house on the start of summer, my wife and I found it was unbearably hot on hot days, but really just in one room with a vaulted ceiling: the parts of the house covered by the regular, narrow attic were much cooler. I'd been looking into all house fans, but was concerned that they would not solve the problem in my house because they must be placed in the parts of the house without the heat problem and try to draw hot air down and around corners to reach its intake. I found a device made by a Massachusetts company, Tamarack Technologies, which would directly vent to the outside of the house and close shut at R10 insulation level when not in use. This seemed like the way to go. After failed attempts to get one-trick-pony whole house fan companies to step outside their boxes, I just ordered the unit so that now I could just go on Thumbtack and say "install this unit". Separately I got a quote from the company who last serviced the roof on the building, but the estimator basically told me they weren't interested in the project. Kasra at Sustainable Roofing Solutions was a breath of fresh air. Trained as an architect and an expert in passively efficient building designs, he listened and said I was spot on with my concerns about the air flow. He gave me good ideas about more common solutions to this problem - in particular suggesting a powered skylight. I very nearly returned the unit and went with his suggestion - until we discovered that the specific roof design of the house made a skylight less suitable. But once we had determined that was a dead end, I got enthusiastic, professional and capable work. All in all, the project came in on time and budget. I'm very satisfied with the outcome, and it has definitely made my home livable on hot days and the evenings after.

I'm a retired plumber with 45 years of experience in all phases of the trade. I've done about a dozen or so projects for Tim Murphy of Island Builders. I must say he has some of the cleanest jobs during construction. He ALWAYS does quality work, which made my work much easier to do & turn out looking so top notch. Tim does all work with finesse & skill to get the 5 star job rating from me! Gregg Ott - Perfection Plumbing

David and Adrian were a pleasure to work with. We chose BCB after receiving three separate quotes for our water damage repair in the kitchen and garage, based on their competitive pricing and no-nonsense approach to the repairs. They didn't try to squeeze additional funds from our insurance company and completed all of the repairs within five business days - new kitchen floor, repaired the kitchen cabinet, replaced cabinet facing and new insulation/drywall in the garage. The house looks better than when we bought it- we would highly recommend BCB!

I chose Dave at the time based on the work he had done in my sister's house. Some beautiful custom cabinets and a kitchen Island along with altered existing cabinets and trim work. I couldn't believe the "before" and "after" pics and the amazing transformation he had facilitated. He brought the same magic into my house and had to work around some existing issues left by other contractors. His background and experience seem to put him at a higher level than those I've dealt with in the past and I would say he brings levels of professionalism and talent that are hard to find. It seemed like he really listened to what I was asking for and worked with me to make it happen. I'm looking forward to calling him again next time I want some work truly customized for me.

Mr. Escobar is the best contractor I've met in San Francisco. He has worked on two very difficult houses in the city for me and was great. One house had numerous building code violations that required removing a deck and stairs, rebuilding the deck and stairs, removing dry rot, resheating and residing, replacing the windows. repainting. It all had to pass reinspection by the building department , which it did. At another house, it was a deteriorated Edwardian, where much of the trim and façade had rotted away, and he had to rebuild the façade as it was originally. That was another amazing job and he succeeded mostly because he is an excellent carpenter. I live in Reno, and these jobs had to be done without my presence, which requires complete confidence. Whether it is interior or exterior work, hire him and you won't be disappointed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
