Dr. Oh is an outstanding tutor and person who is dedicated to helping others and will go the distance for them. Dr. Oh agreed to tutor our 11th grader for two evenings before his exam, and although it took Dr. Oh 1.5 hours to get there the first evening, Dr. Oh made the long trek to help him the second evening as well, true to his word and to ensure that he fully understood the materials. We greatly appreciate Dr. Oh's dedication, passion and integrity in preparing our 11th grader for his precalculus exam, and helping him understand the concepts behind the equations!! Thank you, Dr. Oh!!!! You are truly a gem!!

I doubt you would get a good instructor like Mr Yevegny. I am a 40+ year old guy trying to relearn calculus. I soon realized I had not had a good grip of algebra and trigonometry. He has patiently worked with me to improve my ubsertanding if the subject in my own pace. Without his guidance I would not have taken these steps either. He is extremely knowledgeable and provides a great insight at every step. Slowly piquing your interest and taking you more and more into the subject. Of course his dedication to teaching and the subject is reflected in his punctuality and professionalism. I hope you too would start your math travel with him. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me for further reference. Thanks Anand

The best part of working with Angela is that she is very careful about teaching you in the simplest way possible. As an International student junior in computer science classes in college, I had a hard time understanding the lectures in class, so i would get weekly tutoring from Angela. She is not like an irresponsible tutor who will just tell you how to solve your homework and be done. Instead, she asks you a lot of questions and leads you to think until you get the right answer. It is really awesome. Also, Angela's bilingual teaching is great. She is very fluent in Chinese and we mostly used Chinese in class because I am a Chinese international student.

Viktor is an excellent math tutor. I came to him having not seen any math for eight years, and having not actually learned much of the math I had taken in high school. He started at the beginning and patiently made his way through all of the material I had to cover. Even though I started my tutoring really late in the game for the my test date, he made a big effort to meet with me as often as I needed to and tried to teach me as much as possible in time for my test date. He is really patient and very encouraging, and does an excellent job of explaining concepts that are confusing to people. I have had a lot of math tutors over the years, and Viktor is by far the best one. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Wesley met with my son who has been struggling in his College Statistics class. My son could not believe his vast knowledge and capabilities with the subject. After and exhaustive search we have found an excellent tutor! Now I plan on having him tutor my daughter in Pre- Calculus as well.

Christina Moyle: A little over three years ago, Christina swept into our lives like a guardian angel. Neither my wife nor I could any longer give our dog his proper amount of exercise. Our dog, Rascal, loves Christina to death. He yips with his happiest bark when she arrives to take him for his walk. She walks him three days a week for an hour each walk. We grew to like Ms Moyle almost as much as Rascal does. She takes Rascal for a bath every month or so, and he not only enjoys the bath but he also comes home looking like a prize winner at the Westminster Dog Show competition. One could not hope for a better dog walker than Ms Moyle.

    About

Hello, I am a current university student at University of the Pacific. I am working towards a biological sciences major as part of the predental program. Right now, I am taking a semestral leave in order to study for certification exams and am looking to take this opportunity to help any student or individual who may need assistance in biology, chemistry, physics, math, English, and SAT or otherwise general study skills. My academic focus is very much life science-oriented, and I am most confident in teaching in those areas up to introductory college levels. In explaining the numerical details of my academic background, I have graduated from high school with a GPA of 3.75 and SAT scores of R: 690, W: 750, and M: 800. I have taken the following AP courses: Computer Science AB, Calculus BC, Physics C, Japanese, biology, U.S. History, and statistics, receiving a score of five in all but statistics (4). At the university, I am currently a junior with a GPA of 3.32. I have tutored at various levels, from middle school students to my university peers, at different environments. I have tutored in a classroom environment, working to help the students in conjunction with a lecturer. I have also tutored my university peers after recommendation from my professor, allowing me to build and lecture my own curriculum in a weekly session. Since I am simply taking time off from the university to study at my pace for an exam, I am extremely flexible in schedule and available every day. I look forward to working with you. Thank you. Joon

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
