What can I say? Scott was at my house within 24 hours of my initial contact with thumbtack, examined the roof from front to back and gave me the good news that he has never seen a more solid, well-installed roof. In fact, the roof needed no repair whatsoever! No charge! Nice meeting you! His opinion is that what I was seeing on the ceiling is the result of perhaps a seam on the drywall coming apart which could happen as a result of some disturbance such as a small earthquake. In any case, I'll keep an eye on it and have it re-plastered at some point. Thank you Scott. Whataguy!

Very detailed assessment of the roof leaking problem. Using pictures on the roof he explained the roof leaking issue at multiple places. He was ready to work on it right away and within just a couple of hours, he fixed the roof leaking problem. The contract covers it for 2 years. He was very communicative and friendly.

Jose called and arrived same day with an in home estimate. We requested to do our own roof tear off, which he provided us a few days to take care of. He and one other worker completely re roofed our flat roof into a pitched roof in one and a half days. The quality of work is impeccable, and his Pricing is fair and affordable, no hidden costs, and he never tried to push us out of our budget. He is extremely professional and pleasant to work with. We will definitely be hiring him for future home repairs.

I have a used car dealership that has a commercial building. The roof was badly damaged, and we needed a new roof. I worked with Hector and his team to get this job finished and I can say that they did an excellent job for us. Hector was extremely professional, and was quick to give us an estimate on the job. He was also friendly throughout the entire process. He was very pleasant to deal with, and he explained what he planned on doing and he gave good reasoning behind everything. It was evident that he knew what he was doing. But, most importantly is he took pride in his work. Hector spent multiple days out on the job, and took his time because quality was a priority. I know that this roof will last a very long time and I really would like to thank Hector and his team for that.

They installed solar on my roof and they installed a QuietCool whole house fan which I can control from my smart phone! They added a attic fan and insulation. I selected this company because they do more than just solar, they made my home energy efficient.

I received a call within an hour of posting my job on Thumbtack and he came out for a quote the same day. Winter Roofing did an awesome job building the patio cover and took extra care to ensure that everything was solid. They also quickly fixed a few minor shingle issues with the main house roof. Even Winter was great to work with on this project.

I had Dennis from EDS tear down and re-do a roof on my 2000 square foot home. He and his crew did a great job. His bid on the job was quite reasonable... they cleaned up afterwards and left the home looking great. He even fixed a few extra things at no charge. I highly recommend Dennis and his company.

Very impressed with this company!! From start to finish, their communication and their customer service was amazing. Every time I called the office, all of the office girls were super nice and friendly (Claudia, Teresa and Diana)! Our Project Manager Rigo was very knowledgeable and took his time to explain all the details. The roofing crew showed up on time and did an awesome work! We got a lift & relay with a power wash. Our tile roof had a lot of moss on it and now it looks brand new. Definitely made a big difference on the look of our home. Thank you Roof Masters for the wonderful experience and superb workmanship!

I met with Shawn Ross, owner of Ross Renovations, to discuss the repairs needed to fix my leaky roof. He was very knowledgeable and, after a thorough inspection of my roof, he patiently explained what should be done versus what he could do for the limited funds I have available. He was very friendly, upfront and courteous. I was very disappointed that I could not hire him to do my current repairs. I plan to keep his business card handy so that I can hire him for any home repairs I will need in the future.

I'm so glad that I chose CalPro over the roofing company that my sister recommended. When Art arrived, he made me aware of the condition that my roof was in. I knew it wasn't great, but he took pictures and really allowed me to make the right decision. My sister had recommended someone who did her roof, and was a little cheaper, but didn't have any financing options and when I started asking important questions like whether he was licensed and insured, that guy couldn't wait to get out of my house. Ironically, she has 2 leaks and has no idea when he'll get back out to fix them! CalPRO however showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves and were finished in 2 days! Art also spoke with Zac, his manager who was able to get me a little better price on insulating my attic at the same time as my roof! Overall my experience with CalPro Renovations was top notch and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to my friends and family.

AMG was very professional. They provided high quality work, they were knowledgeable and AMG was very thorough with the work they provided. My family and i would not hesitate to call them again. AMG provide a 2 year certification. The owner told me that he does the job right the first time and there wont be any problems and i for one respect that kind of integrity, professionalism and charter. Since AMG's service, i have already recommended them to 10 other people. If anyone wants quality service on thier roof, AMG will provide free estimate and will stand by thier work. Thank you AMG for security and comfort you provided!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
