Michelle is a warm and inviting person who made me feel comfortable very quickly. She has been a great mentor and helped me overcome many obstacles in the aftermath of a serious life event I experienced. I felt I could be me without any concern for fear of how she may react. I have done traditional therapy but have preferred her holistic approach to combining therapy with a goal oriented approach to solving problems one may be experiencing. I have been able to get to a much better place in my life thanks to her support and the perspective she helps me obtain through self reflection. She encourages you just enough to help you push past your self-set limits without ever feeling like she is pushing you past your boundaries. Somehow, I always get to the realization I need on my own terms but with the help of her encouragement. I love her approach and feel that her respectful manner along with her warm, understanding attitude creates a space for one to really get down to one's core and find one's self in the process. She has truly been a gift to my life.

From: Dr. Steven Bartz My background in medicine spans over 30 years. Based in hard sciences, my first job was as a respiratory therapist working primarily in critical care units and E.R.’s. My doctorate is in chiropractic. The concept of “Reiki” seemed rather fringe and suspect to me at first. Then I began to study this concept, I came to realize that this system is actually based on modern day application of quantum physics, meaning that all life is based on energy substrates. Reiki to my understanding is based on manipulating these energy fields in a manner somewhat similar to how I manipulate the joints to affect the neurological system. My skepticism was thoroughly addressed when out of desperation and suffering for several years with debilitating back pain, “Yes, the irony is not lost in that of a chiropractor with a bad back.” I sought the treatment of Reiki by Katherine McBride. I have to say I’m rather amazed that in only 3 sessions I experienced a 80% (at least) improvement in symptoms. Now, due to my own positive results, I refer my patients to her for therapy. She is now available to see and schedule appointments through my office and the feed-back I have received from these patients has been overwhelmingly positive. Sincerely, Dr. Steven Bartz D.C.

Amy is a wonderful acupuncturist and healer. She is very thoughtful in her approach and takes the time to get to know you and what you’re seeking. Her approach is very holistic, taking a range of factors into account to customize each experience. She has become a valued part of my life and now I can’t imagine life without her.

I've seen all the shrinks, tried all the "happy" pills and nothing worked. Holistic therapy is healing as a whole not suppressing and GHW has taught me that.

I was crippled with sciatica,if you have experienced it you know what I mean! Walking ,driving or just moving at all caused excruciating pain,I felt like an old man. A friend referred me to Antonio and although I had my doubts about alternative medicine I took a chance and it changed my life. Antonio is a skilled practitioner and I encourage anyone living with infirmary to give him a try.

Life-changing. I've had chronic migraines for as long as I can remember, and with Aaron's help, they have decreased almost completely. Aaron focuses on holistic nutrition, which is such a welcome change from most doctors and pharmacists I have spoken to about the same issue, and truly listens to his patients. With a simple vitamin supplement and small dietary change, my condition has improved incredibly. His recommendations are simple, spot-on, and effective. Aaron also followed up multiple times, which is extremely appreciated.

I needed a personal trainer to come to my home and help me get back on a work-out routine. Going to school on the evenings and being a stay at home mom made it difficult to dedicate time to work-out. Pamela came to my home 2x a week for 8 weeks and motivated me to push myself for 30-min sessions. That commitment jump-started my new exercise routine which I have incorporated into my busy lifestyle. She has a firm, yet sweet approach to motivate you which is a great combination to have especially when you want to give up on the last rep! She also provides weight-training equipment such as yoga mat, weights and medicine ball. At the end of the 8 weeks, I reduced my BMI!

Justin gave me private tuition in New York. As a relative newbie to yoga and by no stretch of the imagination, still in my 20’s, I found the prospect of walking into a class quite terrifying! I was pretty nervous the first time he rocked up at my apartment at 7am, but really had no need to be. Justin is kind, caring, full of fun and brings a sense of lightness to his work. He gave me the confidence to carry on and to develop a great love for yoga! I also love the fact that Justin’s approach is completely holistic ... it’s not all about getting into that pose, but it incorporates breathing techniques, reiki and tools for meditation! He totally rocks ... so much so, that I signed up for his recent retreat in Hawaii - Paradise Found. It was a truly wonderful time, with a great group of yogis - all brought together through Justin! In brief he’s a rockstar and a beautiful person all at the same time!

I have a very stressful job and constantly need a massage to release the stress. My. Healer is Helena, she alleviates all my stress and brings great relaxation to me. Her Reiki healing and Chakra balancing keeps me going for a while before I need to go back. Sometimes I just go to feel good. Her healing touch is better than medicines.

I have been seeing Dr. Tze now for over a year, he has helped me through general digestion problems that I have had since I was a child and the after affects of radiation from my breast cancer treatment. I no longer go to a standard medical doctor (they have never been able to help me anyway). He has helped me recover from extreme fatigue, radiation cough and other health issues. His treatments and approach are holistic, treating the body as a whole, rather than a sum of its parts. He is attentive, thoughtful, mindful and caring. I would strongly recommend Dr. Tze as your first alternative to caring for your health and well being.

Tonda is the best functional medicine/energy medicine.... massage therapist/biofeedback practitioner that I have ever been treated by. She provided amazing/life saving treatment for my golden-doodle. She is way more than just a massage therapist - she uses her medical intuitive skills along with her 30 years experience as a biofeedback therapist to confirm the cause of the animals challenge- usually a combination of emotional blocks, with subclinical infection and chemicals/heavy metals- and then treats it with her device and gets amazing results! 'Natara has been my guide to the ultraworld for years. Her caring and open way leads me to discover new and exciting things about myself and others. Her integrity and sense of quiet balance are the gifts which set her apart as a teacher, healer, and shaman in a workshop or large ceremony gathering. I look forward each year to my month-by-month reading, and have traveled to participate in her sound bath therapy and Reiki sessions. I especially recommend her "Shift" workshop which is like an unrolling of one big bounteous medicine bundle for everyone to find something (or everything) to enjoy. Thank you, 'Natara for your unwavering and bright light in this time of great and accelerating change.

My private yoga session with Whitney was incredible. I have been doing yoga on and off for for 6 years now, and I have always paid attention to posture and alignment, but some of the micro-adjustments Whitney gave me blew me away. Poses I have become comfortable in over the years took on a whole new meaning. In poses where I normally feel very confident and powerful, Whitney guided me into very small adjustments, and in one of them as soon as I took the adjustment, tears started rolling down my face! It was so beautiful and so powerful. Whitney truly makes her yoga sessions a (w)holistic experience. Truly connecting mind, body, spirit, breath, movement - all parts of yoga. Her class was an exploration into deeper parts of my body and system, and I was so impressed and excited - particularly as someone who teacher meditation and breathwork! I can not recommend her enough. If you’ve never done a private yoga session, or never done a private yoga session with someone as in-tune, powerful, and knowledgable as Whitney, get ready to get your world rocked. She was so detailed, and adjusted the sequencing with ease to accommodate what my body needed in the moment. Afterward I felt centered, grounded, and empowered because of the connection I gained to parts of myself that have never been accessed. And, as an added bonus she takes the time to tune in to your body and energy centers in shavasana using shamanic healing techniques. I truly can’t say enough about how impactful this experience was. Thank you, Whitney!

When someone loves what they do it is easy to see. Melani genuinely loves being an acupuncturist and helping people. Constantly striving to learn more helps her practice evolve. She treats patients as family and is one of the kindest and most genuine people I have ever met.

        About

Naturopathic medicine is a system of health care that focuses on the use of natural therapeutics to promote health and address the root causes of illness and imbalance, rather than covering up symptoms. This distinctive field of medicine has a primary focus on the prevention of chronic disease to allow the healing power of nature transform the body and mind towards greater health and vitality. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) seek to restore and maintain optimum health in their patients by emphasizing nature's inherent self-healing processes via a combination of conventional and holistic fields of medicine, which in turn leads to an integrative and individualized, therapeutic approach. In her office, Dr. Galina sees a wide range of health concerns ranging from acute to chronic. She individualizes her approach for each patient and utilizes a holistic approach while enabling the patient to play an active role in their care. The path to healing is achieved by a combination of supplementation, nutrition, counseling and lifestyle recommendations to enhance the mind-body connection. Although Dr. Galina is trained in general medicine and cares for people of all ages and for many conditions, her special interests include functional medicine, weight loss, hormones, women's health, holistic dermatology and pediatrics and autism.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

        • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
        • Nutritional medicine
        • Botanical medicine
        • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
        • Hygiene
        • Counseling
        • Minor surgery
        • Homeopathy
        • Acupuncture
        • Intravenous and injection therapy
        • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

        Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

        Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

        • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
          • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
        • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
          • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
          • Do I need a referral?
          • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
          • What will the co-pay be?
          • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
        • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
