Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

I can’t say enough good things about José and JM Roofing. José was very communicative throughout the entire process, beginning to end. His work was professional and nicely done. He pulled the permit and had his team there ready to start when promised. The job was completed quickly, without cutting corners and passed inspection with flying colors. We are thrilled with the results, and are glad we made the decision to select JM Roofing for this much needed, long overdue, re-roof. Thank you José!

I would highly recommend Power Roofing for your next roof project. From start to finish we were extremely impressed by the level of professionalism from this company and our project manager Israel. All of our questions were answered so quickly and he treated us as if we were his only client even though we know they have many clients they are also working with. Truly one of the best experiences we have had with a contractor. Pricing was fair, work was completed timely and we feel the quality surpassed our expectations. Thank you, Israel and Power Roofing!

J&M are professional honest and won’t cut corners. I really appreciate their level of communication and work ethic. Hard these days to find people that do what they say and work hard. I would definitely hire J&M Roofing again.

Very unhappy with the outcome of this project. Mr. Tua came and gave us a reasonable verbal quote. When they came to do the work, the quote magically went up more than 50%. He finally agreed to do the job for $100 more than the original quote. When they got on our roof to begin and realized the job was not as extensive as originally thought, they did not reduce the price. They used almost none of the materials planned in the original quote. After the work, our roof still leaks. When they were contacted to fix it, they said is would cost even more money even though they never fixed it the first time. Avoid these guys. I feel like we were scammed. My husband is a very nice guy. If they were dealing with me directly they would be facing litigation. Mr. Tua, you could make this right. If you do, I will update my review to reflect that.

Absolutely hands down the best service I have received to date. The team is caring, incredibly knowledgeable and works to perfection. When you need someone to come into your home, in this case in an emergency situation with my roof, it nice to see a professional provide affordable quotes, explain the options, and then complete the work with perfection. Love love love the team at Rafeal Handyman Services. My team in the future. Thanks for taking care of my family needs😁

Rafael and his team were up for most any project we had at our house. They did some roof repairs and then also built a fence and painted amount other things. Would recommend them as he was a great guy and very friendly. Showed up when he said he would. He and his crew worked extremely late to get the job done and did a fantastic job. Extremely pleased and will be our go to in the future!
