Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Excellent work. We had a very complicated move where, we had to move furniture back & forth between two houses. JR & Joseph worked hard for five hours straight, moved the stuff quickly and helped us organize. Very friendly, kind and good people. Highly recommend them.

Although they were 2.5 hours late. They made arrangements to move all of our stuff and store it overnight for no charge. Communication was difficult because the movers don't speak English that well but they are reasonable.

To start with, Brandon called me back very quickly after I reached out to go over costs and details about my needs. When it was moving day, Ryan and T were right on time and ready to get moving. They were courteous, friendly, and very hard workers. These guys didn't play games and certainly didn't waste time. They seemed motivated to help me move as efficiently as possible, even though they were being paid by the hour. I don't just do reviews either. They earned my recommendation hands down. Not only were we moving locations, it was around 100 miles away, and a full house worth of stuff. All of my stuff made it to our new home safely and exactly how it was when it was packed. They were careful, friendly, and efficient and one of the best priced movers, so mover to mover, consider hiring these guys. Not that I ever want to go thru a move like this again, I feel lucky to have had their help and can't imagine how it would have gone without them. Two thumbs up, 5 stars, and nothing bad to say at all! They are the real deal! Thanks guys.

I had to chase Daniel down prior to the move. He assured me all was set. On the morning of the move I learn he hired a subcontractor to do the job. The subcontractor tried to get more money upfront before the move began. Once I got a hold of Daniel he assured me he would fix it immediately. NEVER HEARD BACK. I ended up having to rent my own truck and move myself. Very disappointing, complete lack of integrity and ownership. Recommend you stay far away.

So happy this company was there for me when I need last minute movers to move my 2bedroom home to storage! Not only were they 15 minutes early and patiently waited (i was 20 minutes late), they moved all my things quickly and were happy to do so. All my things were packed with out me present so a lot of odd shaped items and thing I still had to decide to keep or toss. I also had two very large Work benches that they moved no problem. The best was besides being totally easy going and kind, is that they charged me a flat fee of $300 for 2 guys for 3 hours of work. No travel fee, no tax, no extra anything!! I tipped them of course as they definitely deserved it! I can’t wait for them to help me move all that stuff from storage to my new place in Walnut Creek.

Great communication, stellar price & value, nice people, punctual & great service. All of my furniture was wrapped, no walls were damaged, and they took great care to move everything correctly & effectively, while still trying to keep themselves safe (which I also appreciated). This company is a moving gem. I will definitely be using them again in the future!

My experience with them started out okay in that they showed up when they said they would to move my belongings from California to Texas. The actual cost was considerably more than what they quoted me over the phone, but the mover said that I had more stuff than was normal for a one bedroom, which I didn't really want to argue. The problems really started when I got to Texas. I took their 15- business day move guarantee literally and booked a business trip for 16 days later. Closer to that deadline It became clear that they weren't going to be able to make it in that time frame. One of the people I was dealing with (Leon) wanted to see if I could move my trip (which I couldn't) and was suggesting that I may have to pay storage costs if I wasn't at home when the movers arrived. I was forced to remind him that they were the ones who had not made it within their promised time frame. I understand a lot of people are moving from California and it's a busy time of the year, but I wish that they'd made this clear to me back before I booked with them in the first place (Leon told me at the time that they usually handily beat their 15 day promise). The packers themselves were polite and efficient but but lacked attention to detail: eg. my $450 Denon receiver was plonked sideways inside a box along with a bunch of generic items, and now doesn't sit completely level. And a toilet plunger and brush were tossed into a box along with my other bathroom items like toothbrushes (yuck). These guys seem to have good reviews and they're probably ok for small local moves but for long distance I would recommend going with the big guys who do this kind of thing all the time and don't have to purchase space on someone else's long distance trip. My total costs in the end were about the same as if I'd gone with one of the big movers.

I appreciated that they were willing to take on a small job. We only had 4 items to move into our garage but we couldn’t do it ourselves. Many others who responded had a 2 or 3 hour minimum. We’ll be using these guys again!

I had a small but difficult job I could not accomplish myself. Steve and his partner did a great job moving my huge cabinet from my third floor to my garage. They kindly removed their shoes in respect of my home. Top notch!

iMoving responded quick with cost details and every single questions were answered. Mr. Dong called and let us know ETA and updated a couple of times as traffic condition changes. Our employees didn't have to wasted time waiting for him during WFH period. He moved our boxes (weighing between 30 lb to 100 lb) very efficiently and neatly. He was able to finish way before the time frame I expected. With the time left, he helped with taking out crates and packing our sales parts. Good personality too. Thank you!

In my experience, Golan was SUPER!! Without exaggeration, he was truly SUPER!! Golan’s is a one man workhorse, doing the work of two!! Professional, excellent work, a fantastic listener (not just a yes guy), at an exceptional hourly rate. I called Golan to re-do the latter portion of a moving truck that was improperly loaded ~ he not only un-loaded and re-loaded again correctly (using the full space of the truck, as needed), Golan performed the task efficiently and timely. Following this, Golan accepted several household “fix-it” tasks including washer/dryer removal and install, caulking, hanging items... Thank you Golan, you were a life saver!!
