Raquel has made it possible for me to be able to walk and handle my dog. I tried almost everything boot camps, dog walkers and spent thousands. She showed me how to handle my dog so that I could take her out not pay to have someone else. i am forever grateful for her.

Our Golden Retriever puppy was very hard to control. He was constantly chewing on everything including our hands and feet. We needed help so we hired Happy Dog Training. Ralf has been working with our dog Teddy for 6 weeks and he is now well behaved and totally manageable. Ralf is a very knowledgable in the area of canine behavior and his knowledge has resulted in excellent results I highly recommend Ralf and his staff.

After the sudden loss of our 14 year old Shiba Inu my husband talked me into getting a puppy. I am not wired for puppies and travel for work and work from home when I am in town. Enter TANK. While adorable and sweet he tested me daily. Biting, jumping, pulling on walks, grabbing my shoes while they were on my feet, taking papers off my desk and running wild before eating them. We tried kennel training during the day but he would howl whenever he heard my voice making phone work out of the question. We also have a 15 year old healthy but arthritic pug that was also not ready for Tank. I wasn’t equipped for him and our home was starting to feel too small. After just one session with Duane, Tank became engaged and showed signs of focus. After 2 sessions I became engaged along with him. We had hired another trainer that was treat based which may work well for dogs who are not a Shiba Inu. When we left town for the holidays we didn’t want to have our regular dog sitters come stay with our boys as Tank would just be too out of control and restless so we thought we would try Duane’s overnight “boot camp”. Tank went for 2 weeks and the positive transformation is amazing. He has always been a good boy but now he is an absolute joy. He's playful and joyful but engaged and aware of his "boundaries". Friends of ours 10 year old daughter (Tank’s “Godmother”) even said he is more fun to play with and is a “better” Tank. I cannot explain my sense of relief. I knew I wasn't wired for a puppy but I now am so in love with this little guy and my heart is absolutely full!! Thank you thank you thank you, Duane, for everything you did for us! Wishing you a wonderful New Year!

After reading the numerous positive reviews on Cassidy and her training techniques I felt confident. From the very beginning Cassidy was friendly, helpful, and attentive. She consistently took a personal interest in my dog, Simba. Simba's needs were extensive as he needed socialization as well as obedience. Simba is a one year old 80 pound pit bull mastif mix with tons of energy and strength. After several email exchanges we decided to speak in more detail on the phone. Cassidy listened carefully to all of my concerns and background stories about my dog. Without judgement she gave me perspectives that might be contributing to some of my dog's behaviors. I appreciated not being "scolded" for making the situation worse, and instead she comforted me by saying things like I can see why you would have thought that. This allowed me freedom to share openly about making the mistakes I may have created by being over protective and even possibly over-bearing. On our first meeting Cassidy arrived ready to take on any situation she was faced with. I explained to her that my dog had not met many new people. She calmly walked me through the steps on how to have a new person enter the house. I followed her steps and was amazed at how fast my dog was able to connect with her. Her calm demeanor throughout the entire session kept us at ease as she was able to show us a variety of techniques for each of the training components. I couldn't believe how relaxed my dog was as he laid down at her feet and stared at her as she spoke with him. I knew when she left she had already made a substantial difference. My dog was asleep shortly after her departure and remained in a deep sleep the entire night. Today I already see improvements. A few days later Simba was able to attend Camp Cassidy. I was a nervous at first just knowing he was out of my care. However Cassidy continued to send updates via text, phone, photos, and even videos. She was thorough and always made time to talk me through any of my concerns. Cassidy continues to be in touch and she offers continued support for our dog. I am grateful to have met someone with such a great heart and a true passion for what she does. Since leaving camp cassidy my dog has been neutered, and he will be ready for additional training. I look forward to working with Cassidy in the future. I woud highly recommend Cassidy to anyone who needs special assistance with their dog.

Steve and his team are abosultely fabulous, so very friendly and down to earth!!! We left our 4 year Old English Bulldog, Boris, with him for a 14-21 day boot camp to help with aggression and obedience. While Boris was learning at boot camp, Steve had my husband and I learning as well though one of his beginner training DVD. After practicing with the DVD and several calls with Steve (he was always available for questions whenever they came up), our whole perspective on pet ownership and responsibility shifted for the betterment of our entire family! Every family member has a role and a job, Boris included!!! Boris was ready to come home at 14 days because he responded so well to the training. When we arrived to get him, my husband and I did a nice hour long training session with Steve and two of his wonderful trainers. We feel very confident with the skills and tools SW K9 has given us to continue Boris' success! It's also extremely nice that they call and check up on him/us even after the job is finished. Our relationship with Steve and his trainers will definitely continue beyond this one job!

Tommy is amazing. I can’t emphasise that enough, he was able to accomplish so much in just 5 sessions. I had been contacting a lot of trainers and all of them kept trying to sell boot camps and weeks of sessions, all saying that it would take so much time (even though I said our time was limited). I was completely disheartened until I came across Tommy. He’s so flexible, understanding, and patient. If you need a trainer, look no further!

I brought my 2 year old male pit bull to Kevin 6 months ago when my dog started experiencing some significant leash aggression towards other dogs. The problem was getting progressively worse and I couldn't walk him with other dogs present (even on the other side of the street). Kevin took him in for training and there has been a huge improvement. My dog is able to walk normally on a leash (doesn't pull like crazy like he used to). He is able to see other dogs on his walk and no longer react (huge improvement!) and he is all around a better trained dog. After the training camp, I had several sessions with Kevin (and my dog walker) and Kevin taught us all the techniques and commands he had used with my dog. Kevin is very responsive and answers all of my questions promptly. I would highly recommend him for training for any dog issues. Kevin also takes dogs in for boarding where he does a little training refresher course. My dog has gone in multiple times since his training whenever I've had to go out of town and my dog really enjoys his time there.

Wendy and Steve are lifesavers! I have 3 large bully breed dogs, a doberman, a pitbull, and an american bulldog. Before Wendy and Steve I'd tried training sessions, having trainers come to the house, shock collars, ever form of correction equipment, and nothing was working. They were barking so much that they were getting me kicked out of my home, and playing so rough that they left marks on each other, and the play would escalate and possibly turn into fights. My doberman was extremely aggressive towards other dogs on the street, he would pick on dogs at the dog park, and he would growl and act up around children. Every boot camp place quoted me around 2k or more per dog, which was something I could not afford. I had almost lost hope. Until Wendy and Steve! You guys are seriously angels! They gave me a fantastic rate and they are truly qualified trainers. They have years of experience and they love dogs. The methods they use work. But, you have to be willing to put in the work too. They train you how to keep up on the training the dogs learned during their intensive boot camp. If you don't keep up on it and practice with the dogs then the behavior will come back, but that is to be expected. They give you dvds so its so much easier! you can just rewind if you have questions, not pay an extra $50 for another session. These guys are the best. They saved my boys. We are quite the happy little family now. I take my boys everywhere with me (normally just one or two at a time) and they are completely different dogs! I cannot recommend them enough! Thank you guys so so so much :) Friends for life :)

My name is Broadway. I am a 2 year-old Bichon Frise. Here are my Top Ten Perspectives on the Characteristics of the Perfect Pet Sitter—my Mary Ann. My Mary Ann: 1. Truly loves me; I love her 2. Knows how to communicate with me, from gentle conversation to occasional discipline (darn!) 3. Makes me feel excited about being with her; it’s like being on a mini-vacation all my own 4. Eliminates my separation anxiety with the love and attention she dispenses 5. Treats me as if I were her own—giving me special care and handling, and let’s me watch TV with her and cuddle 6. Is reliable: shows up on time, even a few minutes early, and is an excellent communicator with my "mom" . . . keeping her informed, if requested 7. Can think on her feet and assess what to do in an emergency—first aid, trip to vet—although I have not had to call on that skill 8. Offers special services, like the time she picked me up from doggy day camp 9. Takes me for walks to both familiar and new places, and I get to ride in her car 10. Is fun to be with, and my mom and I think of her as part of our family That’s my Mary Ann. She is the B-E-S-T!!!

We were fortunate enough to connect with Susan (our "fairy dogmother") shortly after getting our puppy, and we've been working with her for the past five months. What a difference she has made in our lives, and in the way that we interact with our puppy! Susan's approach is gentle and loving, rather than stern and forceful. She teaches primarily through positive reinforcement, and it's amazing to see our puppy respond. In just a few short months, our German Shepherd has become well-adapted and obeys simple commands. Susan engenders respect and trust from our puppy, and he is astoundingly eager to obey her; she has done a wonderful job of training us as well! Most importantly, her training teaches patience, persistence, and positive interaction with your pet. There are no "pinch" collars involved in Susan's training, no loud berating or punishment of your puppy. Instead, she trains the puppy with encouragement and reward (for our dog Max, that means treats and back scratches). Something that I strongly believe helped our pet to trust Susan and want to please her was "puppy camp," during which our puppy stayed with Susan for several days while we were out of town. While we were initially reluctant to leave our brand new puppy, when we returned, our puppy already had the foundations of strong training, and our subsequent training has been much easier because of that. I highly recommend Susan's training for your puppy or dog, and to the extent possible, I advise that all family members participate in getting trained so everyone in the family is on the same page. You will bless the day that you found your "fairy dogmother!"

I taught my pit bull mix how to sit and stay but when we would walk he would bark at all the other dogs and pull on the leash. I couldn't get him to stop and one time he almost bit the other dog. I had Amber from the Customized Dog Trainers come out for just 4 sessions and he already stopped pulling and actually even ignores the other dogs when we pass them. I live in a community with a lot of older people and they don't like pit bulls already so I am really glad that he is behaving so they don't think he is an aggressive dog. I would recommend this dog training because it works and I am so much happier now that Buddha (my pit bull) listens to me.

2 Paws Up was a life saver. We were in a bind as we were visiting for a week and brought our lab pup Janie with us. The hotel wouldn't let her stay in the room without us so we contracted with them for daily walks and also daycare. It was the summer and they even had a wading pool at their private boarding home (Camp Cuddle) for her. We will definitely use them again when we come to Manhattan Beach again.

After working with 2 other trainers, a friend reccommended Jeff Todd. The other trainers were completely ineffective so we prayed that Jeff would help with our rescue dog and her incessant barking at strangers, family and guests. After a home consultation we all agreed that his "Boot Camp" approach is what our dog needed. After 4 weeks of boot camp our dog was 95% better. We highly reccommend Jeff and his team for dog training and consultation.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
