What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

I was taking lessons through a community college. I felt like my vocal issues were being overlooked in order to meet deadlines. Rena is helping me to build my voice. She doesn't let me get away with anything and she is patient. Plus, she doesn't assume to know what voice category I fit in as soon as she hears me sing (in other words, she doesn't put me in a box assuming that where I am now is as far as I will go). Right now we are undoing my bad vocal habits, learning how to produce sound without unnecessary facial, lip/tongue, or breath movement /tension. I learned that I was unable to hit higher notes because I was using my whistle registry too soon. My last teacher assumed that was the limit of my voice. If you are a serious singer who wants to learn how to operate/control you voice, Rena is worth the investment.

Sarabeth is highly competant and clearly understands voice. She is calm and patient never rushes. I have sang for decades and with many teachers. I found Sarabeth to be exceptional in her ability to produce my best tone. She had me sing each phrase and worked with me to refine and perfect the sound. My one hour lesson with her made me feel calm and relaxed which is most important when singing. I would recommend Sarabeth
