Oscar and his crew did an amazing job! Better than what we asked for originally too. Oscar came out and did an accurate bid, and even fixed our existing gate (which was off hinged/centered) without expecting anything (even to be hired). He maintained excellent communication every step of the way, gave us a timeline and stuck to it. He was always professional, polite and considerate (even working around our small dogs making sure they didn't make their escape while he worked and cleaning up after themselves). His craftsmanship is undeniable and the gates look amazing!! We are very pleased. He listened to our wants and concerns and made sure to inform us if things changed (rain held us back and some underground main water pipes changed some of our plans), but he was informative, responsive and flexible. We totally recommend his services and will use him again.

Renato was prompt and very professional. I asked him to install a large wall mirror and fix drawer slides in my closet. He found the wall stud to hang the mirror properly and got my drawers fixed. He cleaned up after he was finished. He then offered to adjust our front gate when he noticed it was not working correctly. I would definitely ask him to help me again.

When I realized that Jonathan Tamayo was able to do much more than install 4 sliding door screens, my list grew exponentially and I was not disappointed. I asked for a brick-lined concrete walkway and a new back gate which Jonathan Tamayo built from scratch and wanted it to be perfect. I said,"It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be better than it was and it's already looking 10 times better than it was!" I've only observed people working that hard when I watched the NICU nurses who took care of our preemie twins when they were born, only those nurses were not dripping with sweat. Jonathan Tamayo was hard-working, friendly, conscientious and considerate. Yes contractors come to your house and they make a mess but you will LOVE that mess because in the end, your outcome is going to be so wonderful and Jonathan Tamayo did clean up after himself. He did a terrific job! Thanks!

For the last few years, we've had 3-4 windows that did not open or close properly. Window companies and local stores only wanted to sell me new windows. Then along came Bruce. He came to our house, looked at the windows, and said "no problem." He ordered the necessary parts, and came back to the house within a few days to make the repairs. The windows now glide like brand new. Throughout this transaction, Bruce was great. He was very prompt, respectful of our home, and his price was very fair. In addition, he fixed an interior door that wasn't aligned properly. I will highly recommend Bruce to anyone that wants to discuss his service and performance.

I would give him 6 stars and would definitely hire him. He was competent, friendly and professional at all times.

I hired Mike for a flooring job for my parents' house. It was a project that needed to be done on a really tight timeline. I was coming in from out-of-state to reno their house before my dad was being discharged from a skilled nursing center. Mike was a joy to work with and communicate with -- really easy-going personality and a total pro. He was also completely reliable and trustworthy -- so important during such a crazy time. Showed up on-time, did what he promised and kept to his word -- and his workmanship was excellent. He flowed and adjusted with every one of my changes and snags. He recommended flooring appropriate for my dad's situation, sources that would fit their budget. When I couldn't schedule movers for the right window, he helped me move furniture. When the flooring I initially planned on was out of stock and we had to go with a harder to install type, he honored the original quote and switched gears without a hitch. My mom was sick and I had to go to the nursing home to help my dad and I'm so relieved that I was able to leave Mike to work w/o needing to be there; I wasn't concerned one bit. And finally -- when I lost the keys to the side gate he helped me with the lock saving me a costly call to a locksmith. The floors were finished beautifully and he left the place tidy and clean. I couldn't be more thankful for such a great job done and to work with such a nice guy. I will call on Mike again -- he's really good at what he does and on top of it all a super nice and decent person.

You can tell by his work he have professional experience for over 35 years. I like how professional his work is done & how polished it is when it"s completed. I had my bathroom painted, a wood frame covered up pluming that the last handyman left out. He helped fix up work that the last handyman left poorly. So I trusted in him to insert 2 bedroom new doors and a wooden gate for my driveway. I highly recommend him. He speaks perfect English & Spanish.

All City Builders and I agreed on a price for the fence project, the staff arrived at my home on the scheduled date and began the removal of the old fence and material. They immediately started the installation which was professional with the complete process completed in two days. My neighbor who shares the fence due to property boundaries was impressed and while the workers were on site, they negotiated with them to complete some additional work on their property. The overall result looks good and enhances the curb appeal of my home.

I called Moses and Alex over to fix my outdated gate. From the first phone call I really felt like they understood what I wanted for my pedestrian gate/mailbox and how to execute it properly. They came over to give me an estimate and explained the many different material options. Within the next week they came back to my house with the gate and mailbox ready and installed it that same day. Between the time of our first and last meeting they called me and updated me often and helped me understand exactly what I was getting. I appreciate their professionalism and how beautiful my gate turned out. I’d recommend them to everyone and I would not hesitate to go with them for any fence or gate needs. Thank you Moses and Alex

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
