Eli did a great job with a project that was not easy, installing sliders on three large drawers built into the wall. Will definitely call him again the next time I need a handyman.

This technician was so diligent I had a crash after my computer installed new updates. It was a mess to figure out. He came and worked on it for 3 days. He wouldn't take any money until he repaired the problem. I was so impressed with his knowledge about computers. He said he would have to reinstall windows 7. I didn't have the lic. # until I contacted the person who put the program in. When we finally got the # Alexey was able to repair my computer. I would highly recommend him to fix any computer. We had a great experience. We had a heavy mirror and chrome kitchen shelf that needed to be hung in plaster walls. He was professional and efficient. Thanks to him our dining room and kitchen look SO much better. We will definitely be asking him to help us out in the future for all our handyman and plumbing needs :)

Jesus was a fantastic, responsive handyman. He handled installing a wifi enabled fan with his partner, fixing some GFIC outlet issues. He put up a security floodlight system, and he was reliable, fast, and willing to stick around and do more as I found some extra problems I needed help with. Nice guy to boot. I'd use him again (and plan too!)

Pete was seriously amazing. He examined my situation and let me know all my options and ultimately, helped me decide what would be the cheapest/most efficient option for me. He even went with me to return the wrong a/c I bought and helped me pick out a new one, and then took the time installing it and making sure it was perfect, adding many extra steps for him. He truly went above and beyond. I have never met such a genuinely sincere handyman/electrician who will do whatever he can and spend whatever amount of time helping you and cost you the least amount of money. I definitely recommend him and I will use him again and again! He knows what he's doing and will make sure your 100 percent satisfied with the result before leaving.

Eric was personable and efficient. He hung up two curtain rods, a large clock, and chalkboard in my apartment. Not only the best price in town but also an all around great guy. If I ever need a handyman again he will be my first call.

Bruce put in 2 sheets of glass where we had none before, only burglar bars. He also sealed the entire window. It's SO much quieter now and he was super fast and responsive. Everything was as he said it would be and we will use him for all future projects! Very confident in his abilities :)

I was impressed by Franco. I told him that I would be happy to share my experience on here because he did such a great job. I rely on reviews when selecting services online so I hope this helps someone decide. Franco is worth the hire and very fair. He is trustworthy and reliable. It is not often you find a handyman that can do anything you ask, make accomodations for your needs, and go beyond your expectations to live up to his word. He is absolutely one of the best on thumbtack and I would recommend him to anyone on the search for a great handyman. He is a joy to work with and has a great moral and professional standard that shows quality and character. I had him paint my baby nursery and he did it as if it were his own. It meant so much to me. I can tell he is passionate about his work and truly takes pride in this job. He does not have to work as hard as he does but he just has an amazing work ethic. Make sure you put him at the top of your list. We may have to fight for his availability if we all hire him because I guarantee we will all call him again for more work!! Haha.

I needed a lock changed out with a stripped screw and a closet shelf reinstalled; and I needed it done ASAP. Mark was great! He made himself available within a couple of hours, he was on time and completed the work efficiently and quickly. He was extremely respectiul, takng off hs shoes before entering my home and he even cleaned up after himself. He also went above and beyond installing a extra security measure for my safety incase of a break in which I really appreciated. I would definetly recommend Mark for any handyman work needed. He is a very competent and a super nice guy. Thank you for your help! Kirsten

Jason came through in the clutch! After searching another site for a handyman who can pick up, deliver and install a fridge, washer and dryer, I was first set on another individual. After the other guy's repeated delays and lack of responses, I needed it done quick. Found Jason on Thumbtack and the rest is history. In a complete professional and timely manner he was able to do everything we needed quickly and done right! We will definitely hire Jason again for future handyman or service needs. Great hire!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
