Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

My 3 year old Cattle Dog Max has been reactive since I got him. I had tried other trainers and working with him myself with no success. I found K9 Pack Dog Training and met with Or to get a recommendation on a training plan. I enrolled him a month long board and train program. During the included lessons Or taught and made sure I understood the training material. Since coming back home Max is a completely different dog! He walks perfectly on leash and his reactivity issues are completely gone. I highly recommend K9 Pack Dog Training for any dog training needs!

My two Golden Retrievers (the "boys) were not very social with other dogs. Robert is extremely knowledgeable and uses a rewards-based approach to training the boys. Training with Robert has given me the ability to handle distractions and be safe around other dogs while walking with them. Robert treats my dogs with great love and is amazing about making sure that I understand the proper techniques to train with my dogs outside of our lessons. I highly recommend Robert to help with any training issue(s) or behavior modification problem.

I helped my friend find this trainer for her dog that was required to have training sessions by animal control. She was extremely honest and up front about how much work the training requires especially from the owners side. That said, she has been extremely accommodating and working with my friends dog for a couple sessions now, and she is doing an amazing job. I have seen huge improvements already, and the dog and my friend seem sooooo much happier in their relationship and life altogether! Too bad I don’t live in California, because I would hire her to come work with me and my dog in a heartbeat.

If I could give K9 Pack Dog Training 10 stars I would! The facility is so beautiful, clean, and well equipped. I have an aggressive 7 years old husky with a history of agression, behavioral issues, and anxiety. Really didn’t know what to expect or if I should even try to train it as we know huskies and how much the age matters for training. I saw that Or trained dogs for the Israeli military so I said ok I’ll give it a try… Well after 2 months of the board and stay program at the K9Pack facility and private sessions while he was boarded. I have to say I could’ve never believe my dog is that happy and feeling freely in all environments now I can enjoy my life with my dog. I highly recommend this service to anyone that truly needs help like I did at the time. Thank you K9Pack! 🐕❤️

We rescued a 75 lb 2 yr old boxer mix (Rocky) and were having challenges trying to train him not to jump on people, pull when walking on a leash, and to listen to basic commands. We hired Robert to come to our house for 2 hours once a week and work with Rocky and us. He was amazing. After 2 visits Rocky was doing much better on a leash and was beginning to listen to commands such as stay, sit, and come. After about 4 visits we thought we had a new dog! We also like the methods Robert used in training Rocky. Reward and praise being key. Robert also spent time 'training' us and we learned why what we were doing before did not work. We would definitely recommend Robert as he truly understands dogs and how to work with their owners too.

I reached out to Or for help with my 3 year old rescue pitbull after another trainer was not able to teach her basic commands, leash manners, and mainly stopping her dog reactivity.  This was not my first Pit but I couldn't get her to follow my lead. WOW, I was super impressed from the first time we met ( and actually was a little embarrassed since I described her as being super difficult...). As often we learn, we are the problem and not our dogs. In the first session I already saw so much improvement which reassured me she is in capable hands and gave me the peace of mind to leave her in Or's board and train facility. The facility is super spacious and clean and I received videos and pictures from Or on a regular basis. When I picked her up I was amazed to see her beautifully walking on a leash, attentive to the commands and we walked by other dogs in his program with no issue.  You get what you pay for and this was worth every penny!! As Or told me: discipline is not one session,  it is a state of mind. I now have a happy and healthy dog which I can take places and enjoy our time together in and out of the house. Thank you Or for your help, patience and dedication. You are a miracle worker and your passion and love for dogs is remarkable. Maya & Stella.

Five weeks ago, I left Otis, my 4 year old Havanese, with Or for a training program. Although an absolutely adorable and lovable pup, life with Otis was becoming increasingly difficult. He was unpredictably reactive to other dogs and people ...extreme barking, leash pulling, jumping on people etc....and after a couple of biting incidents, I knew it was time to get really serious about finding someone who could help modify his behavior. Enter Or...the dog whisperer! From our initial consultation it was extremely apparent that the man knows what he's doing. His passion, incredible understanding of how dogs think and his ability to communicate with both dog and human is amazing. Although I was a bit anxious about the cost of the program, as well as being away from Otis for such an extended period of time, I decided to go for it...and am I glad I did! Otis has been home for a week now and is an absolute pleasure to be around. He knows his "place", sits quietly at our feet when we are eating (even at a restaurant), and no longer whines for what he wants. Walking Otis is really enjoyable too. He is totally non-reactive to other dogs and people, strutting proudly past them. Now that Otis has learned proper behavior, Or is working on teaching me the techniques for keeping it up. I have only had 2 sessions but already feel more confident in my ability to reinforce all that Otis has learned. I only wish I had known about K9 Pack Dog Training sooner. If you are looking for a true professional, Or is it. The man is amazing!

I met with Or to discuss training my 2 year old German Shepherd, Buddy. Buddy is 105 lbs and full of energy which has been troublesome with a newborn at home. He was also very difficult to walk and would go crazy when he saw another dog. I previously sent Buddy to another board and train program which primarily used an E Collar. This seemed to create more aniexty for Buddy and without him wearing the collar he was very difficult to control. After sitting down with Or, he explained his process and how he would use a much different approach with Buddy. I ended up leaving Buddy that day for the 4 week program and the results are amazing. He can now heel perfectly and walking him near other dogs is no problem. He will now stay/ place and actually listens to commands. I love how he was trained with positivity rather than the E Collar. Or really seems to understand the phycology behind the training and left me confident with the tools I need to continue where he left off. I look forward to more individual sessions. Thank you to Or and the staff for making everything so easy.
