How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

New outlet install for bathroom by toilet for bidet. Electrician picked good, discrete location for the outlet. Unfortunately, first outlet installed was not GFCI, which given that at least Edwin is licensed, why was this not done in the first place? They fixed the problem once my husband noticed. Although I think they could be more professional (called me to ask for directions and then arrived very late), their price is fair and finished service satisfactory. Arturo, the electrician doing the work, cleaned up very well after himself, and once there, finished the job relatively quickly.

Absolutely outstanding experience. I was initially a bit anxious because I know very very little about electricians but Masoud did a fantastic job - on time, easy to communicate with, etc. Would work with him again on any and all electricity projects.

They were great to work with. The electrician who came to the house was professional and courteous. He did great work. One area they could have been better is that they installed a cheaper unit (led light) than they initially said when they gave me the estimate.

You know, how can I say this. Have you ever watched the TV series called Doctor House? The Doctor loves to take on the toughest cases and finds a way to solve them no matter what. I'd call Sasoon the Dr. House of Electricians. Here's why: (1) He's super thoughtful about his work (2) Finds a way to make it happen no matter the complexity (3) Works long hours no matter how long it takes (4) Prices very very modestly (5) Respects the people around and is very clean with his work (6) And takes feedback very well If you're looking for an electrician with these traits, he's your guy!

Pablo as outstanding. Very knowledgeable about our home EV charger installation and helpful with suggestions for best location to install. He was very responsive with our requests and excellent value. I will go to Pablo first for our future electrical needs and highly recommend him to anyone seeking an electrician. Thank you Pablo!

I had a ceiling light that would not turn on. The electrician knew to look at the wall switch first, which saved a lot of time. He showed the ceiling light still worked by connecting the wire manually. Then he replaced the wall light switch— he had replacements ready to go in his vehicle’s inventory. It was a smooth customer experience.

Updates: Because most people here hire pros based on reviews, so I feel I have to be update this review. Obviously 100% five-star reviews sometimes are not helpful. The repaired switches didn't last for one week, and they didn't work again. The LED lights controlled by installed switches are flickering. Contacted Peter, but never got response. Had to hire another electrician to trouble shoot and repair. I was told the complexity (I mentioned in the original post) was very likely caused by the previous 'repair'. Well, I can't make any judgement, because I'm not a professional electrician. Ironically, I paid extra $50 to express my gratitude for fixing unnecessary 'complexity' . Original Peter is very professional and punctual. The work was out of expectation of complexity, and Peter rescheduled another job and came back to complete it. Very smart guy.

Victor was very responsive and fit me in, last minute, to fix a dome/recessed light fixture. He arrived on time, was friendly, and got the job done quickly. He even changed out the other light, so that they would match, as I had gotten a different color. The whole time, he was also explaining how to do the minor repairs on my own, so I wouldn't have to call an electrician or handyman every time. How nice is that?!

Moin saved the day as we finished an interior remodel. We were finishing a remodel when pending final inspection a number of electrical items came up that were not addressed prior to then due to a combination of us changing the plans through the project along with the prior electrician being a little tough to schedule as I am realizing they are very in demand and super busy. However, Moin, took time and did some major electrical work without disturbing the finishes - only after putting in the countertops, cabinets and backsplash, we realized we needed to run a 240v into the kitchen, open up the backsplash to put in a few more outlets (grounded too mind you) - and it was very overwhelming, until meeting with Moin that is. Not only did he complete the above work, he also helped us bring our box to code by replacing the circuit breakers with ARC fault breakers. This was a complicated job and I understand trades not wanting to finish other's uncompleted jobs, but Moin tackled this so beautifully that it kept us from losing hope which was happening much more so towards the end. His finish work is excellent - I really appreciated him taking the extra time to make sure the outlets were straight, the plugs were flush with outlet covers which he also made sure were flush with the wall. I was in no position to even ask this of him, but he did it on his own and he also made sure to go above the current code by securing the wiring and boxes in my attic which I was also appreciative of. He kept his worksplace clean and tidy - that was appreciated and even moreso after the family moved in. His is skilled in what it is he does, you will see that when you watch him work. I feel fortunate to have found him at the right time as I would not have been able to complete this without this major electrical corrections and updates and knowing how it can be - I was lucky he was free and available when I needed it the most. Thank you and hopefully, pending his availability, I can work with him again! If you have the chance or are stuck in an electrical situation, you will be glad you reached out to Moin.
