I studied Hebrew with Carl and really enjoyed his teaching. He was patient, answered all of my questions and was willing to accommodate my schedule. Carl also took the time to find me a study guide/book to use. I had to take a hiatus due to my busy work schedule but look forward to working with him again soon. Thank you Carl!

Chris was very attentive and informative. He was able to edit and provide me with powerful reasons why I should reword various sentences. I would recommend him wholeheartedly. His work was on time, worth the cost, and his experience in writing is helpful in guiding and supporting anyone new or old in the process. Working with Sabina Islam was a great experience for me as she not only displayed high professionalism, but it was obvious she cared about my website and its success by the amount of work and detail she put it into it. From the start, she was upfront with the complexity and the costs involved. Because this was not an easy project, she first had to put a lot of thought into it by putting together a technical documentation based on my needs with a timeline of milestones and deliverables. She communicated the progress well by answering all of my questions on an item-by-item basis, continually kept me updated with lengthy phone calls and detailed emails. Her team went above and beyond by putting together an algorithm for my doubles tennis league that automated member registration, pairing up of doubles teams, submission of match results, generating a season standing, and depositing it all in a history page of all matches played by each member. I told her my vision and she put all the moving parts together in a cohesive, user friendly website that members will keep going back to again and again. Her team even provide me an instructional video of how to manage the website as the administrator and has guaranteed me support for a full month after the project’s completion. My website ( - San Diego Junior Doubles League) is now something I can be proud to show to my members and future sponsors. I will definitely go back to her for my next project! Highly recommended.

Skip took on a job that was pretty big and what made matters worse, a person that had just neglected the fundamentals of writing. It's not that I don't know them, I was just too lazy to apply them the way they should be. He reminded me of it. I asked him to be brutally honest and he was. The wonderful thing about him, he later pointed out the good things I was doing right and eventually made my confidence skyrocket. The job your asking me to describe is not only Skip helping me with the book I am working on, but him guiding me and restoring my confidence to get me back in the fight after being knocked down by life, people and dare I say editors and publishers. He made me realize putting forth my best effort in a world that is so competitive is just too important to forget. You ask what went well with Skip? Everything, but what stood out the most was his honesty and clarity of various situations and problems. The quality of his work and guidance is excellent and I couldn't ask for any better advisor. Nothing could improve my experience with him, that's how impressed I am with him. Thanks Skip and I look forward to continuing to work with you. Sincerely, Jeffrey L. Ivory

My company has used many copywriters and content creators in the past... Not by choice, but because we hadn't been able to find a reliable punctual source for content. Well, the search is over!! Kate is an amazing writer. Her style has just the right mix of wit and professionalism to make even the most mundane subject interesting. We highly recommend!!!

I have been working with Emily for a year now, and it has been an enjoyable and productive working relationship. I hired Emily because of her strong writing and editing skills, which have remained consistently great, and I’ve been impressed with her professionalism, communication regarding deadlines, and the positive manner in which she takes feedback and then fits her material to exactly what I’ve asked for. Emily has been creating discussion guides for books, and I have been able to trust that when I assign her a project, the resulting guide will be thoughtful, intelligent, and accessible. You will find Emily a pleasant person to work with, and I’d recommend her work with no reservations!

Brent was tasked with editing the text of a city's comprehensive plan, as well as laying out text and graphics in InDesign. He did an incredible job with technical editing, but also found a unifying voice and style in a document that was written by many writers. The resulting document was clean and much more easy to read and navigate than its previous iteration. I am very happy with the result.

Bonnie helped write amazing content for a large non-profit pancreatic cancer organization. From web content to brochures she truly has a talent in many fields of writing. Working together she helped write for landing pages we A/B tested, which ultimately led to more conversions. Bonnie also helped set the tone and voice, focus on the value proposition, and connect with users which led to lower bounce rates and more engagement throughout the website. The turnaround time was quick and she is an easy person to work with. She is a writer with tons of experience and would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a true professional.

I had been working on a non-fiction book to grow my business for quite some time and really struggling. A good friend referred me to Jenna and after talking with her for about 10 minutes, it was clear that I needed her help. She worked with me first to get an outline for my book and helped me set the tone that credentialized me. She coached me through the first couple of chapters and when I realized I that I am just not a writer at heart, I hired her to ghost write the rest. I am so glad that I did. Her skill with words is outstanding. My book is going through a final proofread right now and in the next few weeks I am going to be a published author!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
